Last spring I found a Craig's List, under Farming, where a home was between renters. They offered the public to come in and get all the apples they wanted. There were three untouched trees, loaded, and the ground was covered. Three adults - all the apples we could handle - didn't put a dent in what was left. I love when the community shares instead of wasting.

I have a friend who works for a large super market chain in my area. She is in charge of the produce dept. When she found out I was raising pigs she would call me to come pick up huge bags of produce they could no longer sell to give to the pigs. The catch was I had to pay a dollar a bag as they couldn't give it to me. I would sort through the bags deciding what we ate and what went to the pigs. Most of the produce was still edible . One of the times she called she had two full crates of bananas that just started getting brown spots , we took what we wanted and gave the rest to friends. It is a shame what we waste in this country. Love your videos!

We did the same for our pigs and chickens! we asked the store if they could give us any bad or wilted produce for our animals, and all we had to do was provide a place for them to toss it. A trash bag would be 2/3 full every day from just one local organic store, much of the produce only had a single bruise or wilted leaf so we washed and ate much of it. Sooo worth it!

There are dozens of Apple trees along the ditch of our local Walmart. Year after year, I see them all fall and go to the squirrels. This year, I asked my local sheriff if I could just go pick them. He told me they are on public property, and to pick to my hearts content! Loved it! Resourcefulness at its finest 😊

I hope we gave gleaning here. I'm much older than you and I had the same experience dumpster diving. I not only got food but I carpeted my house. With remnants. And found great treasures. Good for you. People live in a through away world. When it was trash day if I saw a piece of furniture by the road I checked it out. God always provides what we need.

I had recently heard that there are billions of tons of food thrown out every year in this country. I think that alone would feed the hungry in the world. It makes me sick of all the waste. I used to work in food service and I cried the first few times I had to throw away food( a bunch of it). Also, I was working in a snack bar and I wasn't making a lot and had to support my daughter. I had to throw out a bunch of food while I couldn't afford to feed us properly. It just kills me. I have already emailed my local chapter from St Andrews. I can't wait to get started!!

This is so wonderful. I wish I was there. In the UK many of our orchards were destroyed centuries ago and have not been replenished, but there is a law which says that if you walk through a countryside landscape, on one of the public footpaths, and it takes you through an orchard, you can pick any fruit that has fallen. Whenever we go walking, we take an empty backpack and take some fruit from the ground - there is plenty - and take it home to make blackberry and apple compote. We serve it with hot custard or whipped cream. That is my guilty pleasure.....!!!

What a wonderful blessing! We have several trees up here where I live. They are on forestry land. I had to Lau g h when my son in law came up and laughed at us cause we pulled over on the side of the road, ran out and grabbed a bunch off the tree while they were sitting at the bridge light waiting for the construction vehicles to move. He saw us run out with a bucket and grab a bunch. Of course we share some with him. Later that week we went to a free festival where he grabbed a bunch off of a tree and we all made Apple cider. Boy was it good. The following week we picked even more. We went to my mom's and we all peeled and cored many bushels. Then boiled them down. We used our crock pot to keep it want while we canned it. If we had to leave we put the crock pot on and left it. When we came back we made Apple butter. It was so much fun. I learned something from all of this too. My mom didn't know how to make homemade apple sauce or how to can it. My grandmother was a canning queen. So, you never know how much you impact another generation by spending time doing fun projects like canning. We also made several loaves of banana bread that weekend also. There was a terrific sale on bananas I couldn't pass up. We all got some. My mom,sister, and all my children and little grandchildren helped. It's amazing what they can do even at 3 years old. Loved your video and can't wait to see more! May God richly bless your life!

I would love to see more city and county governments plant fruit trees in addition to large non fruiting trees. The city could even sell produce at the Farmers Market to put money back into the parks while weekly leftovers go to a shelter. It could help youth groups earn badges as well. I was disappointed when our city decided to plant non native, non producing Japanese cherry.
@Brifromscratch8 жыл бұрын
Those are great ideas!
@metoo38214 жыл бұрын
Good idea. BUT this is asking big government to raise food which would be considered being partisan. Spraying the trees, making sure the fruit was picked, cleaning up the mess off city property would be prohibitive, all reasons this would be rejected. The city I live in had a "county farm" that was once used for raising fruits and vegetables. Jail inmates tended the plots and the produce was used by the jail. Fast forward 30 years; city jail abandoned farm which was then laid out in small plots which residents could rent on an annual basis. The fruit trees were cut down even tho some were still producing. City gave the reason that no one was taking care of them and the fruit was attracting rodents, etc. No logical thinking as far as most were concerned but city government spoke and that was that. Poor southern state, west of the Mississippi, fathered a President. I'll let you guess the state.
@jennifern28054 жыл бұрын
@@metoo3821 The likely reason for the "county farm" shutting down is unpaid/slave labor. I'm not talking about a Federal project, but a city or county project. Asheville, NC has a huge edible city park, while Atlanta will soon have the largest in the nation. It's doable through volunteers, clubs and MG training classes. Young people are interested in sustainability. That's why people like Justin Rhodes, Joe Saltine, Art and Bri, The Hollars, Off Grid with Doug and Stacy, Joseph Simcox and other channels/content are popular.

Those apples look so delicious! The ones in my garden don't look half as yummy! We had a bad year: too dry and too hot! A lot of apples fell to the ground before growing and they're quite wormy! I don't know if that system exist in the US. Tell me, if you do! I would love to know! (There's certainly a lot of things like that all around Europe as well. ) But in the country where I live (in France), there's been a type of "association" that has grown over the past ...15 years? (maybe even more than that, but it has been getting more popular in the past 15 years) It's a system where farmers offer subscriptions methods. People give, let's say 3 or 6 months of monthly checks with a certain amount of money per month to the farmer and sign a sort of contract with them. The farmer will generally offer two major types of options, which is a medium ( 1 to 3 people) or a large baskets (for family of 3 to 4 people) per week, full of veggies and herbs (and there's often options with local eggs, milk, meat, cheese, bread and honey too) of what they harvested during the week. So the people get what's rip locally and in season and the farmers know they have a certain amount of people who will buy their production for the next season. (they put each checks you give in advance, when you sign the contract, to the bank every month. So people don't pay everything in advance, which would be a lot) In my town, which is a small town, two farmers do that as well as other meat, egg...etc. producers that are associated with them. And as an example, a basket for a family of 3 to 4 people is 13€ at one farmer and 15€ at the other. You go to a certain rally point at a scheduled day every week to get your basket(s). This system is made by organic farmers only. And the products that you get in your basket aren't "pretty". They're just veggies and fruits the way they've grown. Whether perfectly round or not. So there's absolutely no waste. It's really like having your own organic garden...without the work! :D Or it's a good way to complete the production of your own garden. It's also very interesting since you might get veggies and herbs you've never tried before or wouldn't think of buying, so you can be even more creative in your cooking! :) (sorry for this long message! Just thought you might like to hear about this if you didn't know about this system. And if you knew already...hum...hehe^^ oops! :D
