what Burt is saying is perfectly reasonable. he's not homophobic and he never has been. he's setting the same kind of boundaries for Kurt that he set for Finn

Willow World Traveler You’re right, but Kurt has some valid points here too, I mean his dad didn’t necessarily mean he would have said no to him having Blaine sleepover, but if he has no problem with Finn having Puck sleepover or if he would set the same rule to Finn having a girl over then Kurt maybe has a right to think he’s being subjected to some unfair boundaries. All in all Burt’s right that Kurt should have asked him, but it’s mainly because as he said he had no idea what two guys do when they’re together which is why Kurt asked him to look into it so they could talk things through in the future.

What’s this “no sleepovers with the other sex (straight)/same sex (gay)” policy of mostly american parents all about? Why not allowing them to have sleepovers? Even why not allowing sex at their home? Age of consent is 16 in many US states, and it’s even as low as 14 in for example Germany. As long as the parents know who is sleeping over and had a sex talk with their kids at some point I think it’s completely fine. If the teenagers are deeply in love they will have sex somehow anyway, maybe even in more dangerous environments than at an sleepover (for example at a party?!?)

you know this interaction really has remarkably little to do with sexual orientation. A kid is pissed that Dad is trying to enforce rules, he thinks are silly. Said kid is intentionally making Dad feel inadequate, or uncomfortable by questioning their logic and purpose, because that is the kind of thing teens like to do, so Dad will leave him alone next time. its all about teens and parents behaving like teens and parents.
@darkmagician25217 жыл бұрын
But in this case, Kurt is hurt because his father somehow does not trust him as much as Kurt trusts himself even though it is the typical "leave the door open policy" when involving sex with any sexual partner. And we know Kurt trusts himself a lot because in the season 3 episode The First Time, he resisted having sex with Blaine who is pretty drunk after hanging out at a gay bar called Scandals. The point here is Burt should have known he can trust Kurt to not have sex or a sleepover. Burt took it a little too far because Blaine only slept in the bed. This "sleepover" is only just sleeping because your typical sleepover involves having a fun party before sleeping and maybe some funny business with the sleeping part that involves "having the door open", which none of this happened. Although, Blaine could have slept anywhere else in Burt's house besides in Kurt's room so Burt would not be hard on Kurt. But nevertheless, I am loving the Burt and Kurt scenes so much as even though they love each other, they still hash over serious matters like sex and other subjects.

@sariyahjackson56464 жыл бұрын
I was so annoyed with Kurt in this episode. It's okay for Blaine to be bisexual and he should also know that his father loves him and cares about him so much. Burt has never been homophobic toward him; he has always been supportive of his son from the day Kurt asked him for sensible heels when he was a toddler.
@anastasiia43113 жыл бұрын
@@maliaferry8212 the point of making out with Brittany was not to figure out if he was gay or straight, it was just Kurt's attempt to please his dad's old dreams about spending time with his son who Burt expected to be straight, due to the environment in which he himself was growing up. And as Burt was spending a lot of time with his new stepson Finn, he was happy about it and was telling Kurt stories about them spending time like a typical father with his straight son, so Kurt became jealous that Burt might would forget about his actual gay son (which was not true and groundless because Burt was happy not about spending time like a stereotypical straight father and son, but about establishing good relationships with a new future family member), because it wasn't interesting for him to go on a football match etc., that's why he decided to pretend he was straight, and Brittany wanting to kiss him, because he was the last and only boy at school she haven't kissed till that time, was the perfect opportunity to portray and somehow prove his (fake)straightness to his dad, so that he could spend more time with him as Finn did. Till and after this time Kurt was 1000% aware and sure that he was gay and not straight or bi. It wasn't about finding himself and experimenting, it was just about Kurt's groundless jealousy which led to these weird behavior and situations.
@xtonibx57703 жыл бұрын
I don't think Kurt was "acting" like his dad was being homophobic. To Kurt, it just felt homophobic. He can't help how he feels and his dad is right and perfectly reasonable but the way he kept saying "being inappropriate" likely made Kurt feel like he was being shamed and naturally he believed his sexuality had to do with that. Kurt's behavior in this specific scene was not nightmaric.

Courtney Denzer look at where Kurts coming from tho, if Finn has a boy sleep over things would be perfectly normal but because Kurts gay he has to assure his dad nothing will happen instead of receiving the same level of trust as Finn simply because of sexual orientation. So playing by that logic if Kurt has a girl sleep over without informing his dad would he have still received this talk since he’s gay or would he unlike Finn have to go through his dad for both genders? Which makes it seem like the dad has more trust in Finn than Kurt, because Finn is straight while Kurt needs more caution for being gay.

@ahhh41173 жыл бұрын
Yeah but also people treated him terribly due to his sexuality! Thats canon! And also its weird being in that situation because in the back of your mind its like "Does my parent wish I was a different?" which is really asking "Is my parent's love conditional?" Its hard to deal with and contemplate. And even if you have tentatively accepting parents like Burt you're still scared, I've met people with loving parents who were still scared. Kurt does so much for his dad, he loves his dad so much. So don't see his reactions as one of ego or arrogance but just him being a scared kid A few months ago he was in the closet, he doesn't know how far his dad will go with tolerating him (he doesn't know how gay he's allowed to be basically)

Kurt is fair in asking his dad to educate himself, but the dad is acting how any other parent would act (actually, being much more calm). It's got 0 to do with being gay. It's his underage child sleeping in the same bed as someone who is of the gender they're attracted to. And furthermore, the other person is someone the kid is attracted to, and the attraction is mutual. I have a trans friend who had extremely strictly religious parents, but when she came out to them they started doing their best to adapt. One day, she was about to go out wearing a skirt and her parents told her she couldn't wear it and to change. She got upset because she thought they weren't letting her out in female clothing. Their reply was brilliant. "No, if you were our daughter-"(ok, they got that a bit wrong but they were trying)"we wouldn't let you out in that either. It's far too short, just find something a bit longer." How brilliant is that haha. These parents didn't even allow Harry Potter, Pokemon, or Sabrina when my friend was little!

Diana Woods The only when this isn’t acceptable to do is when the child’s bi even then they probably shouldn’t sleep on the same bed or just have some prohibitions.

A few years after I started transitioning (I started very young, blockers at 11, hormones 13. I was 14 at the time this happened) I was shopping with my mom and found a skirt I liked but it was quite short. I remember she told me I could get it but couldn't wear it out because it would be "like I was asking to get raped" and looking back, I appreciate that she thought of things like that and cared enough to say something. (For the record, I know that no one asks to get raped and my mom doesn't think that either but she knew things about the world and men that I didn't know at that age and her saying that helped me be more aware that even though it doesn't matter to a rapist what you are wearing, suggestive clothing on a 14 year old will attract all the wrong attention). Hope that makes sense, I suck at explaining. Your comment on your friend reminded me of that situation I was in and thought I'd share.

I find this to be an utterly ridiculous parental strategy. People of any gender and sexuality can have platonic relationships with any gender and sexuality. Not allowing your kid to have friends of a certain gender or sexuality stay over because it "might turn sexual" is a stupid idea because it robs your child the chance of developing a deeper connection with their friends. You don't know what your kids are attracted to and you aren't supposed to. You're a parent and your child is on the cusp of becoming an adult. Give them the freedom to manage their relationships. If you're that worried about them having sex, put a ban on actual romantic partners staying overnight and trust that your single kids will tell you about any romances they get into when they're ready. Trusting them to make their own life choices will make them infinitely more likely to trust you enough to tell you when they start seeing someone.
@akumayoxiruma3 жыл бұрын
I don't understand this reaction: I would allow my children to have sleepovers but I would also make sure that they have proper sex education at the beginning of their puberty so that accidental pregnancies, STDs and other sorts of accidents don't happen as well as teaching them to set boundaries so that they don't let themselves get beaten, choked or abused in a way that they clearly don't want but are too scared to tell. It will be an awkward feeling at first but I think it is important to have an open, mature conversation about that to ensure the safety of my children.

Absolutely. It wouldn't have been an issue if Kurt had come up to him and said, "Hey, Blaine is here, he's drunk and he can't drive himself home, can he stay here for the night?" -- Burt could have simply been like, "I'm not happy about the drinking, but I can call his dad and let him know where he is, and you can make him up a bed on the couch." If Kurt doesn't come to him with this, no matter what time of night it is, Burt has no choice but to assume Kurt's hiding it from him for a nefarious reason. If they don't trust each other to let each other know what's going on, they can only assume the worst, and that's not a good father-son dynamic.

@lucyg45324 жыл бұрын
Burt is definitely right here. He said “isn’t he gay?” so he definitely had heard about Blaine’s sexuality from Kurt. His son having another gay guy sleeping in his bed without even him mentioning that to his dad was wrong. I know Burt doesn’t know gay stuff so he can’t talk to Kurt the way he can to Finn but he tries and Kurt should have addressed that problem with his dad separately from the Blaine issue. His dad would never let his straight stepson have a girl over either.

Blaine goes and tell Burt he was gay. Remember that scene where Kurt can't make sexy face and Blaine went to Burt to advise him to get a sex talk. He said he was gay
@andrewlinden4824 жыл бұрын
Okay. 1. Burt is right for being upset, however he should have asked Kurt to apologize for not asking for permission. Kurt saying that they were fully clothed should have been enough for him to trust his son. Kurt is still wrong but he was asked to apologize for something that he didn’t even do when he clearly said he wasn’t inappropriate with Blaine. 2. Kurt was being dramatic about him being gay was the problem and it being a matter of bias. It’s not. Burt said the same rules would apply to Finn. HOWEVER, Parents really should educate themselves on how sexual activity works for people other than just heterosexual couples. Especially when you KNOW your child isn’t heterosexual. You’re the parent. Be there for your kid even if it means going out of your comfort zone. Kurt was valid with that point.

@quirkypurple35 жыл бұрын
1234lyndia duh, because he’s a teen. he’s trying to up the ante and be offended so his dad stops bothering him. and also it’s a moot point to say this because kurt gives in in the end and points out that he needs guidance. some “rules” don’t sound like rules to kids, they just sound like restriction for the sake of it. also this is the way they chose for kurt to let burt know that he feels uneducated, i don’t see someone like kurt doing it outright when he apparently cannot even stomach watching any porn at this point. they’re trying to have a somewhat cohesive transition to the next episode which is about sex ed

Asking him to educate himself=totally fair. Getting all defensive about someone being in his bed=totally teenager. Defensive about everything! Burt doesn't have a bad bone in his body. When I had boys in my bed at that age (and younger), they were gay and straight and my dad tried to set boundaries but was to embarrassed to say the words. Poor dude. Luckily, even though i lost my virginity at basically 14, I've always been hyper responsible about 'Safe Sex'. Birth Control injections plus a condom.

This had absolutely nothing to do with sexual orientation. Burt was establishing reasonable ground rules for his son and his possible boyfriend. Those are the same rules any good parent should have for their children, regardless of who they date. Burt was the best parent on the show.
@thepoet91344 жыл бұрын
Kurt tries to paint his dad as homophobic in this scene but it works the same way as if Finn had a girl sleep over. All Burt is saying is it’s not okay for your boyfriend to stay just as he would have said if Kurt was straight and it was a girl.

I understand both points of view tbh. I don't believe Burt was being homophobic, he was just protecting his son, even more if we consider Kurt's obvious feelings for Blaine (despite him doing the right thing for his drunken friend). But I also understand Kurt, most of the time in the series, he was treated like a girl by those around him, something we did not see with other gay characters, and while I know this is the writers fault, I understand him being tired of not being able to bring a guy friend without feeling that people are judging him.

I’m gay, and have a son. I’d have a problem with him bringing someone into my house without telling me first. Especially if it was someone of sexual interest. Kurt WAS being responsible by taking him home, but damn tell someone. Also looks pretty sus when found sleeping with him. I never liked Kurt. He’s always come across as a brat with a attitude problem. This isn’t the first episode he’s used being gay as a tool to attack his dad or other non-homophobic people around him. He never came across as sassy, Santana was sassy, he came across as a low-key privileged bully.

Omg Kurt is so ignorant here. Burt really just had to say "It's not cause you're gay, it's because you're 16!" end of story

The thing is Kurt is getting mad for no reason it’s completely normal what he’s saying which is “nobody you’re attracted to in your bed” fin isn’t allowed to have girls in his bed why should Blaine be allowed to be in Kurt’s bed it’s simple and logical
@MissPumpkin916 жыл бұрын
Kurt is being stupid. I mean, you just dont take people to your parents home whitout tell them about it... less you put them in your bed where any family member could walk in and see them... i mean, i'm straigth, but my parent doesnt even allow me to have girl friends to the house whitout a heads up. IS disrespectful
@xeniadelavega68276 жыл бұрын
MissPumpkin91 Ok first of all, do you need to go back to 2nd grade? Cause you really need a grammar check. Second of all, Blaine was in no position to drive himself home so Kurt did the right thing. Kurt came home very late and Burt was asleep. It's not like Kurt and Blaine were causing any trouble at all anyways. They just went to bed. So there was really no reason to tell Burt.
@MissPumpkin916 жыл бұрын
Well.. English is not my first language; i learn it by myself, so i guess my grammar is goint to have mistakes. Secodn, i'm not saying that he did wrong by bringing him home... is just the attitude he show to his father. Like, he needs to be more humble to his dad because is his home, his rules and his responsability if something happens to the boys.
@xeniadelavega68276 жыл бұрын
MissPumpkin91 Kurt wasn't giving him attitude he was simply asking his dad to treat him like he treats Finn. Like a normal boy, because he is a normal boy.
@MissPumpkin916 жыл бұрын
Thats unffair in this situation. Kurt pull out the "homophobic card" to his dad to get out of troulbe but Burt wasnt even talking about the fact of him bringing a boy just because is a boy. He was talking about bringing someone to his house and specting he acted like "oh cool, birng strangers to pass by and sleep, i dont care. Here's your breakfast". The first thing he says is: you need to ask me before you bring "someone" to speel over" he never talk about a guy, never talk about sex. Kurt birng that out. Plus when he talk about sex he talk about Finn and tell him that he woudlnt allow him bring a girl either. Kurt then accuse him about being unconrotable about gays when Burt wasnt

Burt is right though and Kurt just needs to understand. Burt is not being homophobia, Burt is a dad parenting his son. I would be the exact same way if I had a son who was gay or straight or a daughter who was gay or straight. Burt is just being protective of Kurt and Kurt needs to understand that and not go the “Oh would it be different if so and so had so and so in his bed?”

I think he was ok with it Kurt and Brittany because he already knew Kurt was gay. He was just confused why Kurt was going through the trouble in acting straight. Burt is the more reasonable one in this scene IMO. But also Blaine wasn't Kurt's boyfriend yet at the time and they were both virgins until next season.
@lilrose79363 жыл бұрын
I kinda think this is unfair. Cause What it’s someone’s bi can they not have anyone over. Or what if someone is a lesbian but only is friends with girls. Are they not allowed to have sleep overs . Like this mindset is kinda crazy, though since Kurt does have a crush on Blaine it’s fine because things could have happened. But things could have happened no matter who was in the room.

Yeah, but Burt has no knowledge to build that on. Even when I watched the film as a teen, I had at least heard of what sex entailed for two men. Burt is pretty innocent of it because it makes him uncomfortable, still -- it's pretty brave of him to admit that.

I will enver understand why American parents get so huffy about alcohol. It must be a cultural thing, but can someone elaborate please? Cos in nearly every American programme I watch, when the teenagers drink alcohol usually their parents act like its this big major thing? In England our drinking age is lower but we know kids are gonna drink underage but we just don't make a big deal about it!
