I relate to her so much. When she said “I don’t wanna pop pills just to be who everyone wants me to be.” I felt that. That’s why it was so hard for me to start medications because I felt like it was changing who I was but my doctor said “Medications won’t change who you are, they will help you be a happy version of who you are.” That’s all it took, I started taking the meds and they help so much.

Thank you so much for uploading this scene! I was diagnosed with OCD, as well, and I can totally understand how Emma feels in this scene. People should talk more about mental illness, it is so stigmatized. Lots of people don't dara seeing a therapist, even though it is necessary. I still love glee for dealing with this important topic. It encouraged me to find help.
@jordanwest12094 жыл бұрын
I just figured that someone who needs help might one day see my old comment and might not be sure whether going to therapy actually is effective and worth the effort. Let me tell you this: People might say that you should not ask for help and that you do not need a therapist, but now, two years later, I can tell you in all honesty: Therapy has helped me so much with my OCD and I can only advise each and everyone in need of help to go and seek help. I'm not cured, I guess OCD cannot really be cured. But I learned how to break the patterns and how to control it. And it does not matter whether you are struggling with OCD or any other disorder problem: don't be ashamed of it and don't be afraid to ask for help.

I love this scene immensely. It’s a great way to talk about mental health and the road to recovery. I do have one issue with it though, as a psych student. Emma was diagnosed with OCD, but her symptoms of those of OCPD (obsessive compulsive personality disorder), namely how she talks about this just being her life and something that is a part of her, displaying what is called ego syntonic behaviour. Both are very similar, but are treated slightly differently, and that always makes me see Emma a little differently. Still love this scene though.

I don't blame her for not wanting to take pills. when I had a nervous breakdown and went into hospital, we never had one on one talks like this. They just prescribed me Prozac. and I had these unnatural feelings - these bursts of elation, but then I couldn't feel much of anything else. I had reasons to cry and I wanted to cry & let it all out and I couldn't. Therapy wouldn't have been helpful even if it had been offered because my emotions were being suppressed chemically. and I was on a lowest possible dose.

Unfortunately that’s fluoxetine. Works for some, is pretty shit for others. I personally found the SSRI I took one of the worst ones, but am on another one now (a max dose of an SNRI to be exact) which doesn’t feel horrible. no bursts of elation of course (yay depression lmao), but at least not as low as i could be / had been on the lower doses of an SSRI.

During pregnancy the hormone levels in your body change drastically. Postpartum depression usually has nothing to do with resentment. It's the drop in hormone levels and the sudden chemical changes that come right after giving birth. You were connected to another human for nine months and suddenly you are not and now you're supposed to take care of this helpless being which is absolutely depended on you - that plus the imbalance and changes of hormone levels can lead to severe depression.

It began with baby blues actually, baby blues was a mild case of post pantrum depression. If within the 2weeks the baby blues not gone, it will leads too the ppdepresion. Thats why newborn and new mothers need someone to look out for them. Lack of sleep+sudden hormones changes+bad environment (judgemental people, family not supporting) can really have someone to this ilness. I had baby blues once, constantly crying out of the blue, getting angry at little things. I got so stressed out the first time i got home after the second newborn bcs my 2 yo got really sick from sore throat, my mom got her so much chocolate without considering she could gotten sick while i was in the hospital (my husband need to worked), i need rest and i got none bcs she's all clingy to me while i need to look out for the newborn. Some fathers can have this ppd too actually. Baby blues and ppd is more common than you think, so if u see news somewhere that a mother killed her 5yo or maybe a baby some of them probably have a ppd.

Actually she is helpfull. She helps Emma understand that their is a problem and why it is a problem. So Emma can see it is a problem. Also she tells Emma that their is notting to be ashamed of. That is valuable, was every therapist like this woman, their would be less stigma and people wouldn't feel ashamed of it. The reason she tells Emma about her ppdepression is to show her that everybody can have a mental illnes. Also, she describes medicines. So she is a shrink. The reason she discribes them is because facing such a mental illnes is like looking in the mirror and thinking: "Did I do everything wrong? What is my life?" But also and this is way more reason: their will be changes and for someone who has OCD her whole life, it is life changing. Those changes on this moment in her fase can be overwhelming and be diffucult to coop with. So she give her the pills already, because she knows that it will be a hard time an the odds for a depression is very big at that moment. It is preventif, so she can work with Emma without having to start the SSRI's in the middle of her program. The first 2 weeks, the chance someone do suicide is very big. So before unmantling the illnis, it is wise because she hasn't started yet with the therapy. It would be too heavy to coop with in a weaker moment. (Sorry for my English, I'm dutch)
