Consistency was never important for Schue (or for the writers). Santana was suspended for a slap but when there was physical fights (sometimes including fists) there were no repercussions. But every time somebody pointed out these inconsistencies, Ryan’s standard reply would always be ”it’s just a show.”

Rather, it was an instinctive reaction, which may tie to the actress’s personal life. Marley’s actress was married to Ryder’s actor at the time, and she later came forward alleging that he was abusive, so the original commenter was suggesting that Ryder’s behavior in the scene mimicked the actor’s behavior towards her and thus caused the instinctive jump. That said, I’m not sure if it’s true that she wasn’t supposed to jump like that, and this post could be looking too deep into the scene as a way of finding signs in hindsight about the alleged abuse.

It wasn't sweet. Marley did a horrible thing. And her reasons were self-serving. She didn't give a good god damn about Ryder's feelings. She just wanted to ensure he would perform for regionals. You think it's really okay for Marley to tell Ryder that she was catfishing him, knowing how Ryder feels about her, after she promised him it wasn't her? So, Ryder's understandably upset that someone is catfishing him. And Marley decides to play even more games with Ryder. I cannot believe anyone would upvote this comment. It was Unique... if you see this episode even further, there will be a scene where Unique actually admitted it was her when she came up to Ryder and told him it was her because she had feelings for him at the time. She probably didn't tell Ryder it was her because Unique knew she was transgender and she probably felt scared or nervous to admit her feelings about him in this scene before she actually told him why she didn't tell him it was her in the choir room. And when Unique came up to Marley, she said that she didn't need Marley to cover up for her anymore. So after Unique told her that, then she admitted to Ryder that it was actually her.

This scene was to mirror the scene in Season one where Finn demanded Puck and Quinn to tell the truth about who the father of her baby was. The producers can't lie that they wanted to make carbon copies of Finn, Quinn, Racher, and Puck through Ryder, Kitty, Marley, and Jake. They made Bree to foil Santana, but Bree just plain awful at her job. This was an awful plot line which was never brought up again between Ryder and Unique. They should have just left the new kids to just be who they were and avoided making clones of the original cast. This was why season 6's kids were a lot better.
