When I was 8 years old, my father a very frugal man, purchased a record player...I was pretty shocked. My father was not very educated and worked minimum wage making pallets at a local lumber yard. He also purchased a few records, the first one he put on, and the first record I ever heard was Glenn Campbell's Greatest Hits (I think was the title). I had never been interested in Country Music, but Glenn's music was different, it was like nothing I had ever heard before. At 13 I picked up a guitar and learned to play Glenn Campbell songs for my Dad...he enjoyed it so much. Today, when I hear a Glenn Campbell song, it brings back those great memories. No matter what anyone says, I believe Glenn Campbell was the first serious country/pop cross-over star.. paving the way for others to follow. There would be no Garth Brooks, without Glenn Campbell. There is a video here on KZbin of Glenn showing his guitar skills, look for it.. it is just amazing.

I am 63 and I was a rock and roller in my youth, as a listener. I never thought much of Glenn Campbell. Then, I went to his last tour with his kids. An even addled by disease he could still play the guitar. I searched for more songs from Glenn and boy was I wrong about Glenn Campbell. He is LEGEND. Besides all the other session work he did, which is enough for the hall of fame, his solos on Gentle on my Mind brought tears to my eyes. God bless Glenn and may he rest in peace.

Glen's cousin, Joe Erwin, went to my church in Long Beach, CA and would tell stories about singing with Glen and the extended family on Sundays, in Delight, Arkansas. Joe himself had the most incredible voice you never heard. If he wanted to he could’ve been a professional singer. The extent of his “career“ was entering many singing competitions, at bars and clubs, winning every time. He had the deepest, richest, warmest voice I’ve ever heard. RIP Joe.

He went through a "Kenny Stabler" phase... right? Man, I miss the 70's .. Born in 1963, Glen Campbell was my firs memory of music... I use to sit in front of my parents big o'l console stereo system with vacuum tubes i could see glowing through the cabinetry... It was bigger than a sofa bed (and just as heavy) I'd sit Indian style, playing a ping-pong paddle, then badminton racquet then a tennis racquet ... Finally, when I was 13 I got a Yamaha acoustic guitar for Christmas.... Been playing professionally for 35 years now... ALWAYS play at least one Glen Campbell song ... He was my hero (and my dad) ... Now I dedicate "Gentle On MY Mind" to my dad who went on to be with our Lord in 2014 after a life of victory. Last year I started recording a tribute memorial record to Glen... I live in Saint Augustine, Florida, so I'm giving a bit of Spaniard's flare with a dash of Latin Percussion... Thank you Glen Campbell for ALL the many years of great music and great performance, and thank you for you bold witness and testimony of our King and precious Lord and savior Jesus Christ! ~Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all the earth: Make a loud noise and rejoice and sing praise.~

My Dad Ronnie McKinney met Glen when he was 15 or 16. My dad needed a guitar player for a gig in Kemah, Texas . My dad went to pick him up never having met him and told him during the car ride to the gig to try to keep up. If you get lost in a song just stop playing and come in when you can. When they got on stage Glen plugged in his guitar and started warming up playing more than they were going to play all night! My dad knew he had found his guitar player! Glen said himself on the Chris Issack Hour Interview that it was the first time he got paid for playing. My dad, Ronnie McKinney and Glen lived together for several years while playing around the Houston area. They remained life long friends until Glens passing. My Dad passed in Dec. 2016. I know they are picking with uncle Boo in Heaven!

My opinion changed real fast. What an amazing talent and so sad to see him in his last years.

Not long after the Beatles were on Ed Sullivan....CBS bought out Leo Fender's Company and started a policy to have any Artist on a CBS TV show use a Fender product to assure exposure by the old style Product placement when Companies sponsored the commercial free Shows . Mason Williams was an Executive and share-holder of CBS , he composed Classical Gas and got on the 1968 Smother's brothers TV show to play it. Glen managed to Host the show for the Summer break and was given his show in 1969 on CBS with the support of Tommy and Dick. The Fender Company had also owned ' Ovation ' guitars and had Glen use it to prompt sales while Mason Williams ( CBS ) got Glen to also do Classica Gas on his Ovation guitar. Not sure if the Beatles came back to the Sullivan because I don't thing Paul would have kept his 4001S Rikenbacker in the case while handed a Fender , or that Ringo would play Drums made by a Company also owned by CBS. Check out the Sullivan shows after 1965 and watch for Fender products even if the singer Lipsync while the band plugs into dead Fender amps .

I got his autograph on the back of a Polaroid I had taken of him at a concert in the 70’s. I still have it in a group of photos. This was the days of his beard, and his buzz. He was smashed as smashed could be. Drunk and higher than a kite while sitting on a stage step waiting to go on. I hate alcohol and alcoholics with a passion, so it was sad to see him like that. In his photo, he looks like he’s blasted out of his mind, but, when he got on stage, he was the Glen everyone ‘thought’ they knew. When his wife was talking about seeing a demon when he’s drunk, he was that guy that night before performing. Sadly, I ended up marrying one and lasted through 8-1/2 years of abuse. You’d think she was describing the exact story from my experience. Mine never changed, but I’m happy Glen found the Lord again. There are later interviews where she talks about his dementia and how violent he became with it to the point she had to pretty much lock him up in a nursing type facility that dealt with violent people for her own safety at the end. The thing is, he was smashed on her very first date with him. The red flags are ALWAYS there from day one…ALWAYS. 🚩

Hard to believe he's been gone a week and I miss him so much more than I thought was possible. I was a kid when Glen had his Goodtime Hour, and heard his songs on the only little radio we had in the house. I don't know how the station producers got his songs on that station because they weren't pop and they weren't country, but it was my mom's radio and I didn't force the issue. I also discovered Neil Diamond and Herb Alpert from her radio and it was only in passing from playing outside to coming in to use the bathroom. I give Herb credit for making me want to play trumpet and I loved it, still do but haven't played in a few years now. Glen had one hell of a ride, there weren't too many things he hadn't experienced by the time he passed away. I feel so lucky to have lived in this time, hopefully I have another 20+ years to enjoy music and life. God bless Glen for all the music he gave us and if his kids are any sign of things, his 3 youngest are all musicians, Debby can sure sing, Travis is on here, so that leaves 3 kids that I'm not sure about.

At one time, I really wanted to be a professional guitarist, but Glen and Jose Feliciano convinced me I had no future as a guitar artist. Thanks Glen. Thanks Jose.

It is funny how much I hate country music growing up as a teenager. Coming from an African background and as a Nigerian it was easy to appreciate my stand cos it is just not our style of music. All that changed when in late 80s I stumbled on a cassette tape among my elder brother collections of music out of curiosity I played the tape and my perception about country took a turn around there and then. The track that helped me achieve this feat was Glen Campbell Gentle on my mind. The feeling I got from listening to gentle on my mind and some of Glen's other tracks was beyond word description. It immediately took me away from my music culture as it was then into a world of pure bliss. I played the cassette tape until it worn out which didn't take long. Glen song gave me a new discovery in country music which help me expressed myself, my teenage years growing up my first love the ups and the downs, the sunshine and the laughter I couldn't find expression of in other music where easily captured by the country music. Today the feeling I get when listening to country music is simply heavenly. Thanks Glen and may your soul rest in perfect peace.

@Zeljko Trifunovic Read the new testament. Because our Father God so loves us HE sent his son, Jesus to take away the sins of the earth. All you have to do is believe He is the son of God, ask for forgiveness, accept HIM as your savior and you to can have eternal peice. I pray you will understand God knows we arent perfect that is why he had to send a savior for us. Glen Campbell is no different. The Father will forgive Glen and you too, because HIS SON took your sins and Glens..hey, your human and you will sin, thankfully we have a loving Father.

@@BuckeyeNan Monica that is a lovely sentiment and as a sinner I sure wish it was true....but....scripture says many seek and few find. Can I ask you who are those that seek? Not Muslims they have their own prophet and not the Jews they are still waiting. Not any number of people who say I am christian but don't know Christ. The ones seeking are Christians or at least if you asked them they would tell you they are. In that day many will say Lord did we not??? Yes Monica I wish for the sake of all those people that called on Him it was just that simple but what scripture says is that if you believe in your heart that God has raised Him and confess with your lips He is Lord thaw shalt be saved.....in your heart.....and that's the problem. The heart of man is dead and dead men can't believe anything. Naturally if the heart has been given new life that changes but many that believe do so in their heads. They think salvation is by good works. They go to church they tell others about Jesus, they help old people cross the street and to the world seem to be the nicest of people, and they may even be but Yeshua died for our sins so being nice has very little to do with salvation it is really all about new life. If you have been raised you have been saved. I truly wish people would see that and seek God while they had a chance to do so, saddle many think they have already found Him and don't look any further. I loved Glen's music, I sang it all my life and still do I sure do hope I see Him again. I would love to get the chance to sing with him sometime. Only God knows the heart so we will see, but as for those who still have a chance to seek and find God I hope for all of them they understand what scripture is really saying.....

no they don't,jesus said himself, that demons walk on dry land seeking to enter, once the lord saves you, through your own confession that you are a sinner, the devil will attack you even more, but if your resist his idiocy, you will prevail with the fathers help,it is written, seek out the new testament and learn satan is weak compared to the king of the universe
