Another Glen Campbell gem from behind the scenes of a "Talking About Patsy Cline" video, it's really a great video altogether, but this beginning is definitely the gem, it's so good. He did eventually end up recording this song on his Adios album but I'm quite sure that Carl Jackson actually ended up doing the guitar work on it, which is the worst part about his really late years, you stopped hearing less of him actually pulling out some hot licks!
At least Carl Jackson's playing is pretty faithful and still a banger, and it's not like Carl Jackson isn't a legend in and of himself to us Campbell fans!
All being said, awesome to the man himself in action on this one. He's so good man. THIS SONG IS SUPPOSED TO BE PLAYED WITH A DANG THUMBPICK, Glen says, NAHHHH, I'll just hold the pick manually and still mute the bass strings with ease, near perfection man. I love it.
Licks aren't anything too fancy, no gypsy jazz nonsense, just classic Glen messing around behind the scenes going through scales but in that classic Glen way that I never get tired of.
I love this stuff.
Please, anybody who has more of these gems! I love this! I love thumbpicking Jerry Reed and Chet Atkins, if only Glen did more of it. Obviously he can as seen here! This is literally just Jerry Reed's arrangement of the song basically. It's awesome.
Glen and Jerry are just my favorite man. They're great.
ALRIGHT, that's enough rambling, love it, love to see the man himself in the flesh picking and singin', thank you and goodnight.
What a treat.
Original Full Patsy Cline video: • Glen Campbell
Not sure why they didn't title it better. It's a gem.
I think it's another one where the uploader is actually one of the crew recording. It's an awesome dynamic. It's what makes KZbin so DANG AWESOME. We can see this DIRECTLY from the source with absolute ease in our own homes without the owners of these rare tapes ever having to pay for large scale productions of tapes or dvds which would never happen for something this obscure. KZbin IS SO COOL.
The future man.
ALRIGHT NOW I'M ACTUALLY DONE RAMBLING.
Thanks for watching. Hope you love this nonsense as much as I do.

Picked right along and had better nights picking than all time greats like , Chet and Jerry, could play lightning fast or, with great touch. Glen is one of the greatest of all time , like Vince Gill he was marketed more as a singer but can pick with anyone ,Vince is the man too. Chester used to love his playing. All were great friends and greats themselves.

I have to ask the same question man. I would be asking him to play obscure favorites of mine, asking about his practice routine "though I know he was on and off about actual dedicated practice" OH AND TALK ABOUT GYPSY JAZZ YES, it's so sad how un-well-known it is that he's guitar idol is the innovator of Gypsy Jazz himself, Django Reinhardt, man, if ONLY we had a recording of him playing Nuages that would be AMAZING. Ahh, at least you can still see some gypsy jazz-esc licks in some of his more complicated solos, though I'd love to get the full scoop, I just have so many questions for him, but at the end of the day I'm happy we got all we got, and even more happy I can continue to find gems like this from behind the scenes of various recordings! Fingers crossed for future discoveries! Never know what you're gonna find!

I think it was Merle Haggard who said something like, "It should be illegal to have as much talent as Glen Campbell." I've been playing guitar for 40+ years, and I'm not the worst picker in the world. But I've had the extreme pleasure of being around super-talented musicians over the years. It's both maddening and inspiring. Talent cannot be taught, and those with massive amounts of it simply can do things others can't. The greatest testament to Glen's talent is that he because an A-list studio musician without being able to read music. That's like a Super Bowl quarterback who can't call out plays. It just doesn't happen. But people so admired Glen's playing that they totally disregarded this still that usually defines session players. He was a generational talent. RIP, Mr. Campbell.

If you read his biography or hear fellow musicians that came up with him like Roger Miller, they'll tell you everything Glen has gotten he earned! From what I've heard, in his up-and-coming days he was really going nose to the grindstone with his guitar! Learning all them fancy jazz voicings that my heart melts for, meanwhile having a real hard time looking for work being so young, it really is a neat story how he slowly and finally got into the public eye one step at a time! Agreed 100%. It was such a shame hearing about his slow decline, even worse how much they put him through during that time with constant construction, a tour that he was almost entirely confused about, there really is a lot of family drama in that time too with Kim trying to REALLY focus in on her kids and their futures more than the fact that this was a GOODBYE FOR GLEN, Debby getting removed from the show after years and years of performing with her dad really says everything, Especially the way she was removed and the way they instantly took her out of the loop. Kim had her grasp all over it. Reading through Kim's autobiography right now, very interested to see her perspective, of course I know it's just gonna be rationalizations she made to herself, but I guess I'm just invested now lol Thanks for commenting!

Back in '85 I was in an establishment that was a gathering place for pretentious snobs and hipsters. I was reading the paper, someone else mentioned Glen Campbell and another person who was tragically hip said, "Yeah, Glen Cambell, now there's someone who never recorded anything worth hearing. I was 34, had been playing guitar since I was 15 (they hadn't) had watched him on weekly TV for three years just boggled by his proficiency. I folded up my paper and said, "Do you TRY to be stupid or is it just a gift? Glen Campbell is one of the best guitar players in the entire WORLD. And if there's anybody in the USA betterthan him it's some fat old man in Nashville we've never heard of cause all he does is studio work!" You have to be a guitar player, possibly, to appreciate what a virtuoso he was. God bless him.

For sure, it's such a ridiculous list, he was the Bassist for the Beach Boys, guitarist for the Champs for a time, played guitar on 1958's "Tequila" played on Strangers of the Night, Mama Tried, he was really good friends with Roger Miller (learned from his autobiography) so he played on his hit "Dang Me", played on an Elvis Presley record, Sonny and Cher, The Monkees, the list JUST KEEPS GOING He was part of The Wrecking Crew after all! Shame he never got an instrumental album with Chet like Jerry and Tommy did. Or, what I would prefer an album with Jerry and Glen! THAT WOULD BE AWESOME. Ehh, at least he is massively respected in the industry, if not the mainstream. Thanks for commenting! Oh yeah, another thing from his Autobiography, he's actually from Billstown Arkansas! The town is even named after his Uncle Boo's kinfolk! (if you didn't know Uncle Boo played a HUGE part in Glen's guitar journey, he was basically Glen's mentor for the early years and also a very proficient guitar player himself!) Thanks for commenting!

@@thegloobster Lol, I’m guessing you just read the book… I’m actually from Arkansas.. the Campbell family lived in the country, outside the town of Delight, Billstown is a few houses in the country, on Billstown Rd, just off of Campbell Rd. … the reason Glen claimed Delight as his hometown, although it’s very small as well… Glen played on records with Frank Sinatra, and pretty much any major artist of that era… the wrecking crew were the very best during that era…

@@gwag8410 Heck yeah! I did just read the book a couple months back, it was a great read, some amazing insight that I'm surprised has never really been talked about, like the fact one of his absolute favorite guitar idols was actually the gypsy jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt! Famous for basically inventing the entire genre and, well, the fact the man only had 2 fingers and could still shred up a guitar, although in very interesting ways to compensate for only having 2 fingers, Glen says he learned every Django record he could get his hands on, then during the conversation proceeded to play "Nuages" a Django classic. I wish so badly we had a recording of that performance. It would've been awesome! Thanks for the insight from someone who actually knows the area! I knew it was really small, but from the sounds of it it's hardly more than a couple roads and houses! Neat. I believe a lot of Glen's relatives still live there even today right? A lot of them are pretty solid musicians themselves! It was purely customary to know how to play instruments back then! Love it.

@@thegloobster yes it was a great read, it’s been several years since I read his book. I need to break it out and read it again. Yes Glen came from a large family. I remember some of his family making appearances on his weekly TV show he had, including his mom and dad. I believe their is still a Utube video of him singing with his mother, on TV. I had forgotten about the gypsy guitar influence! The last I heard , he still has a lot of family in the area. I’m now probably 3 hours or so north of his home.

Truly! I love that little C# minor vamp, very much a sort of diminished sound with the flatted perfect fifth of the chord playing right next to the perfect fifth UGH, such an awkward sound that I can't get enough of, it really does have that beat in it! As Glen put it the "shuucka shucka shucka shucka" really could make a hit record with that, shame that when it came time for Glen to actually get to record this song he was already pretty far into Alzheimers, so unfortunately on the actual album version on Adios it's actually Carl Jackson playing the guitar, not Glen, but you can see here he can do it! Do it pretty dang good! At least Carl Jackson is a long time band member of Glen's and the guitar work is still solid, so I can let it slide! Love this stuff man! Heck yeah! Glen4Lyf! @@mikedegregorio9113 Hmm! I did forget to mention that didn't I! It is heavily based on Jerry's version, which really makes sense, Glen is obviously a pretty big Jerry fan, he covered quite a bit of Jerry's catalogue in his albums! My favorite being You're Young and You'll Forget off of Jerry's debut album and on Glen's By The Time I Get To Phoenix, Jerry's original version was slow, and in typical Glen fashion he sped it up! Really was never too Reed-Like to begin with and it's a shame! Definitely the worse song on that debut album but that's a high bar! Glen made it into a banger that I love Though the more I listen to Jerry's original it is kinda great too! That debut album really did have a signature sound to it. Now when's Glen gonna finally gonna be anointed as a Certified Guitar Player! C'mon Tommy! Look at this fingerpickin'! Glen doesn't even need a thumbpick he's so good! Just give him a pick and let him ride! Just joking of course lol, they're different styles really, though Glen and Jerry have always been the closest in my eyes and their individual styles fit SO WELL TOGETHER, it's legendary. Alright! He uses a pick for the root (where I use my thumb to hit 2 or 3 strings at a time), and also picks with his fingers. It's been hard technique to master, yet it tends to keep my knuckles more fixed, and flying around, keeps my fingers from grabbing the strings. (Bad habits.) He was fascinating to watch, and yeah, brilliant guitar player. Loved everything he ever did.

He could do so much more than what you see on his records though. I would've really loved just an entire instrumental record with his 6-string acoustic, I wanna hear some gypsy jazz dangit! Oh trust me! I know! I don't blame him either that would be amazing. I would love to sit down with him and simply ask him to play some relatively obscure songs he never got to play live, Oklahoma Sunday Morning anybody!?! Visions of Sugarplums?!?! I'd love to see it, also just talk about songwriting too! Maybe various behind the scenes to the production! What did he think about A New Place In The Sun? Why was it such a flop!? Best bassist the Beach Boys ever had. Thanks for commenting!

He seemed to favor Ovation guitars. Saw pic once of his collection maybe 9 ovations and odd variety of electrics including an Eppi . I think he has a borrowed guitar here( for those who wondered). He could make anything sound good, though. Was a great session guitarist and apparently couldn’t read music .!

I'm not sure if he necessarily preferred them, I don't know why he used them really, he definitely had some sort of deal with them, but like, if I had to guess it was probably comfortability, but in the early days of being a session musician he never used an ovation! Ehh, idk, I'm just rambling, we'll never know! He probably did like the sound lol I don't though. Glen can make anything sound good though!

My sister was a Hostess at an upscale Restaurant years ago and Glen Campbell came in with others, probably his agent and others associated with his venue that evening. My sister said he was demanding and rude to everyone he came into contact with and left no tip for his two very good waitresses. When they left she told them they weren't welcomed back, if he ever came back to town. My Sister was a shift supervisor/Hostess/Assistant Manager and didn't take crap from anyone and would tell you just what she thought of you, lol. He got both barrels and No I never liked his music, ever!

I wonder what year this was, interested in if it was right after the divorce when he was hard into drugs TOO MUCH ALCOHOL with Sarah Barg, it's certainly the worst period, filled with awe-striking stories of Glen walking out to a golf course nude, or getting thrown out of a window, honestly his autobiography just dabbles in it a bit but that era could have it's own book entirely man! It's a shame! Luckily he had Kim who absolutely brought him back to reality, even if Kim wasn't necessarily a nice selfless person herself. Those early stories Kim tells in HER autobiography are an amazing insight into how he was, when he got drunk, man turned into a completely different person, as per usual for a alcoholic. I could go on, but why have I even talked this much! You don't even like this guy! lol, sorry for your experience with the legend, thanks for the insight!

Glen Campbell did a little bit of time in Joe Arapio’s jail. I wonder what it was like he locked up with Glen Campbell. I got to thinking about Tommy Chong and how he did two years in a federal prison for making bongs. I looked up who they locked him up with; one Jordan Belfort the so-called Wolf of Wall Street who told Tommy his story, Tommy had some experience making movies and the movie the Wolf of Wall Street was made.

Relax, folks... This is probably something that was filmed in a Green Room before a show someplace... I'm a retired Pro Musician and the casual guitar picking was always going on. along with the blabbering and cutting up while waiting for your cue in the Green Room or dressing room. I'm sure that whoever was "talking over" Mr. Campbell's playing, meant absolutely no disrespect... And I'm positive that Glen took no offense, whatsoever. This kind of thing goes on every day between people in the music business. Something that just comes to mind... I met Mr. Campbell a few times over the years and he was truly a decent Human Being... And really one of the greatest Pickers of All Time... Right up there with Merle Travis and Chet Atkins. It was sad to see his health decline so seemingly rapidly... And it really hit home with me personally, about six months ago... I've had Arthritis all my life and now the doctor has added M.S. to my list of ailments. It's been getting harder and harder for me to play or sing like I used to. That alone must have been absolutely Hellish for Glenn to go through... I know it's hard for me to accept.

@@slicksnewonenow It really is a shame. Awesome to talk to somebody with some real experience! Where's the Jerry Reed love though!? Jerry and Glen will always be my favorite duo to see play together, their styles can mix so perfectly, anywho, this video actually comes from what I believe to be behind the scenes for a posthumous Patsy Cline duet album, from what I've heard it was a bit of a commercial failure and it's quite unwell known, though it is pretty cool! Here's a link to Glen's finished duet: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q2eamX2fgpWli7s The full behind the scenes with Glen talking about Patsy and playing a few chord progressions from her songs is in the description, just wish we got some of these licks in the final CD recording! The final recording really is kinda just nothing special and it's a shame! It could've been kinda awesome! I guess it still kind of is... Also yeah, I will also find myself doing this sort of background picking when other people are talking, if anything, in the moment it's kinda nice to have some attention off of you! Just play a couple licks for yourself, why not! There isn't anything like being all alone with that guitar. Thanks for commenting!

@@thegloobster hiya Gloob- You're absolutely CORRECT about Reed... He was another monster! Ya know... Speaking of Campbell, even a lot of BIG fans of his don't realize he was on nearly every big hit of the Sixties, as part of The Wrecking Crew. And Jerry was just a force of Nature 🤣 I met him a couple times, too... And he was as nice as anyone anybody would want to meet (and he had an outlandish sense of humor, which is a big plus with me🤣) A few more of the Greats that I ended up knowing in passing on the road were Dion, Bobby Bare, Justin Tubb, Johnny Rivers... Jeez, really a carload of people, I guess. There have only been two or three real a$$holes I've ever ran across... People in the music business are pretty much down to earth... Especially when they get the chance to hang out with people who aren't Star Struck and treating them like museum pieces, or whatnot. Hey- cheers to you. Stay Human!

@@slicksnewonenow Oh heck yeah! This is a Jerry Reed arrangement for the most part after all! Glen definitely learned it off of Jerry's record. You've really met some legends haven't you!? Curious as to who those assholes are lol. Oh and I'd love to get more of that Jerry Reed outlandish sense of humor, you can tell he has it in interviews and monologues but man, I feel like he'd be great at bouncing back off of people, I guess what I'm saying is he would've been great at improv! Also, yeah, I'd say I'm a bit more than your average Glen fan, for one I wasn't even alive at the height of his popularity, in fact, not even my parents were alive at the height of his popularity! Dang! I just realized that! Also, I've read a biography on him and his autobiography, AND Debbie Campbells autobiography, and halfway through Kim Campbell's autobiography right now, I love getting this whole dynamic, really there seems to be a lot of family drama especially between Kim and Debbie, I could ramble about it for a long time but really, the cool stuff is always the behind the scenes, like of course he was a Beach Boy for a year, but everybody knows that, what about the fact he was part of THE CHAMPS for a year! AY! Not as many people know that! You know that famous Tequila song by them from 1958? Glen played the guitar on it! That was right before the session musician days and really just playing on everything from Sinatra to Dolly Parton Really wish Jerry had stuff like that to read! Closest you can get is a little bit in Chet Atkins autobiography which I NEED to read sometime, read the first chapter and loved what I read, would love to find a physical copy though to dive into! But, I guess we can always fall back on all those interviews and various monologues in his live shows! Absolute legends. I could ramble all day about this stuff, I love me some Glen facts! One of his favorite old meals from back home were Chicken and Dumplings! Worthless knowledge! HURRAH! Love every era of Glen, love his story. ALRIGHT ENOUGH RAMBLING, thanks for listening to my nonsense lol, wish I had more people my age to talk about some Glen Campbell! What can I say! I know about Death Valley! I know about Oklahoma Sunday Morning, I know about If This Is Love! I guess I'm a diehard!

@@slicksnewonenow I knew it had to be some sort of custom job! That must be one heck of a guitar right there! Already said this, but it's awesome to see Glen with a non-Ovation acoustic! From what I've heard and from the bit I've seen live I really don't care for their sound, almost kinda tinny and not full sounding y'know? Seems like it'd be bad for like, classical music, but great for heavy rhythm stuff and fast licks like Glen is always doing! I guess it's just about versatility really! Always love your perspective, sounds like you know what you're talking about lol! Me on the other hand, what the heck is a Santa Cruz guitar?!
