I worked for a coffee company in Nashville during the late 80s. Chet's studio was one of my stops. I walked in one day and Chet and Mark were sitting on a couch picking. After stalling around the coffee bar, Chet said I was welcome to listen. Amazing 30 minutes watching two masters work on a song.

As a somewhat-respectable (non-pro) guitarist who has truly always loved the instrument and the people who play them ~ I find it amusing when I see headers like 'World's greatest guitarist' and the like. Atkins is one of the greatest pickers of the 20th Century and Knopfler one of the most uniquely-gifted rockers ~ who as one can plainly hear can play way outside of the rock genre. You cannot miss the mutual admiration seen on this clip. What lovely playing!

Exactly. I'm sure Chet would have said and Mark would say 'there is no greatest/best guitarist'. Two of my 'favorites'.

I would never have thot this version of ‘See You in My Dreams” could come close to the one Chet cut with Merle Travis. I have a new respect for Mark Knopfler - just outstanding!

As a guitar player for more than 40 years, I can tell those of you who don't play that what you're watching represents MANY YEARS of hard practice and polishing. Stuff like this doesn't just happen. Anyone can do it - if he'll make enough sacrifices in life.

V Four watch Jerry’s breakdown when Chet and Jerry Reed preformed it he has an electric part where he sweep picks and it’s jarring.
@kchennessey87814 жыл бұрын
Saying metal invented sweep picking is like saying Tiger Woods invented golf. Gypsy jazz players have been doing it since the late 1800s
@mylesprobus12534 жыл бұрын
Well just understand that Chet Atkins had as much to do with inventing sweet picking as he did inventing the light bulb.
@kchennessey87814 жыл бұрын
@Jacques Shellacques Niccolo Paganini played guitar too, but guitar wasn't considered classy back then. I'll bet he did some sweep picking as the guy invented "shred" violin.

What makes them truly skilled here is that neither one of them try to make the melody scream "look at me! Look at me!" The melody is so clean, the skill to play it that well is an underlying byproduct that's there to be recognized by the audience, not advertized to the audience.
