What I adore about this short film, is that even though there is a love story between these two, it still shows that they aren't completely love struck over each other. Throughout their lives, they want to pursue their individual goals, and grow to become themselves. At the end, I feel that the hidden message was that love will find you when you are ready. They grew to know themselves inside and out, they crossed paths a few times, but in the end they knew they wanted to be together for sure, and that they were ready. Beautiful story, inspirational and moving music. Loved every bit of it :)

First, a lovely piece of animation. Second, to all those who are upset that this short is heavy with gender stereotypes, I have a question. Can't someone like ballet and be a girl at the same time? Can't someone like climbing and be a boy? In the short the boy sees the girl in the trees so obviously she climbed up there. She can do what he does, she just enjoys ballet. Also, about the girl being clumsy and guy catching her, some people can be girls and clumsy at the same time. I am one of those occasionally clumsy girl ballet dancers. I don't think I'm increasing gender stereotypes. I'm just being a person, just as the characters in this short are just being people.
@drewgraham18487 жыл бұрын
I agree with your comment. I wish people would shut up about gender stereotypes and just enjoy the artistry of this beautiful story. (Also, it's not really surprising but interesting to note how often the "stereotypes" are true. I've raised my boy and girl kids just about exactly the same the the boy is drawn to things that are generally considered boyish and the girl is drawn to things that are generally considered girlish. They're gender norms for a reason.)
@ayemaeyalit33545 жыл бұрын
nickelshotnight There could be many versions of this story
@kerdnerl14 күн бұрын
@@drewgraham1848you are right that they are gender norms for a reason but your wrong about what that reason is. It seems natural, but its only like this due to thousands of years of societal pressure. You don't make your kids pick, but that doesn't mean other people don't. Not literally, there's nobody sitting there telling them what to get but when you go into any supermarket and see the toys separated, pink and blue, boy and girl, that compounds itself and kids associate the stuff in each aisle to their gender roles. Just cause someone leans into gender stereotypes as a kid doesn't mean shit about them later on, trust me I'm a trans woman I know from experience

I can't believe I'm saying this... Paperman, I hereby dethrone you. Glen Keane is the reason I took up animation. When he left Disney, I feared that we would never see anything from him again, but now he's back, making his own independent masterpieces--stunning as usual.
@susiezhou626410 жыл бұрын
To everyone with a problem with her being a ballerina: Dance was a good medium to demonstrate the beauty of the music, as well as the complexities and fluidity of the gorgeous animation. It's NOT about gender roles. It's about celebrating animation and the power of music. It's equally silly to think that she has to be climbing or playing ball to render acceptance or full appreciation. Especially considering that it wouldn't even fit in well with this piece of work.
@Narissa-ce8tu6 жыл бұрын
Susie Zhou Yea. I think people forget...stereotypes are stereotypes for a reason! No one needs to follow them, and they are pretty pointless. The problem is not the stereotypes it's when people take those stereotypes and are rude to others because of them. Let the girl dance.
@beabea5985 Жыл бұрын
Absolutely. Keane freaking loves ballet, because it's a very expressive and graceful dance, and so animators adore to storytell through it, and Keane is a masterful animator.
@lowkie784 ай бұрын
I mean, it's not necessarily so bad that it's stereotypical, yes this love story remains quite classic and simple but it's still a lovely romance and well animated.
@kateogden460110 жыл бұрын
People seem to be focusing far too much on the clichéd nature of this story (ie: the girl becomes a ballerina/the boy likes to climb things. Childhood "sweethearts" falling/staying in love and everything is perfect) as if to say that Keane himself was somehow unaware of these age old tropes when he decided to use them. The fact that the story seems a bit "cliché" is not an accident. To me all of that only added to the charm of this video. It's a simple, "tale as old as time" *wink* type of story. Simple, sweet and perfect. Clearly he wasn't going for some crazy, new, innovative love story. It was a simple story, done in a simple (albeit incredibly skilled and beautiful) way.

This is why 2D animation is still the best medium. I think Pixar is great at CGI, since they were the first and that is their legit expertise, but Disney needs to take a step down from CGI and focus more on 2D because that was what divided Pixar & Disney.
@Ogawa4710 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, Disney's 2D animation studio is pretty much nonexistent now. It's probably much cheaper in the long run to animate with computers. I agree, though. Hand-drawn/2D animation is far more expressive and relevant to the human experience. Some day that might change, and we'll see with Moana I suppose.
@HDZ27410 жыл бұрын
Ogawa47 Yup, Disney has liquidated most of their 2D department, a massive tragedy if you ask me.

Shows the difference between the ways guys and girls live and how they both need to grow up in their own way before they've reached a time of understanding of the world and are able to not only communicate effectively but love one another. A story of perfect love. At least that's what I got out of it. Climbing the trees, the mountains, exploring themselves and the world. For brief moments they are on the same page. At the end they're developed humans at the top of the world (of understanding) and can share themselves with each other.

And the music was beautiful and the concept of the journey of an innocent love between two people was so perfect and the simplicity of the sketches all moving completely in sync with the music GAH I don't like it. It's kind of awful that the MAIN thing some people got away from this beautiful animation is the "sexism" in the video. Not the gorgeous composition, nor the beautiful 2-D animation...but the gender roles. It's a simple and beautiful short story: sure it's not complex, but it still has that magical and nostalgic feeling behind it, which makes it all the more beautiful. This animation, for me, is just suppose to be a nostalgic and beautiful one whose purpose is to reflect on old animation techniques and a simple story about growth and love...it's not suppose to be looked at as an political story :/ Also: Am I the only one who ALWAYS gets teary-eyed when I watch this?

Its new, its fresh, yet, the way the characters move, the way the flesh of the puppy plush against the baby, and the way their body move and transition and grow gave me a nostalgic feeling and brought back feelings from a simpler time, when I was still able to get lost in the world that was in no doubt drawn on a piece of paper. Now, even with all the technologies and entertainment being forevermore immersive, I find myself looking at these great works, and truly marveled at my ignorance and naive to think that things like this are of abundance, as I grew up and learn the world to be more cynical, I discover the sad truth that things like this are scarce and of great rarity. But I guess the good thing is obtaining the ability to appreciate them when they do eventually come along. In my opinion I see what made Disney great in every frame of this video.
