My God. This is coming straight from his soul. There's so much emotion in his voice, especially near the end of the song, you know that's exactly how he felt when he committed suicide. How sad

This song really touches a nerve and it makes you wonder, If Johnny Cash hadn't have made it, would Glen Sherley have taken Johnny's spot in history.

A very talented country song writer and singer... As good or better than many of the famous 'big-time' country artists from then till now...The timing and balance of his life was simply 'off ' ; and ended very sadly... If only he had waited a bit longer to decide on whether to end his life, or not... He is greatly missed by many... "Rest peacefully, Glen" ..

This may be second to The Parable by Rick Neufield which he recorded in 71 but this one has deep emotions as well Glen Shirley was a person of talent which he sadly lived a tragic life he struggled to overcome but he simply had his moments and this song here may had been his best he wrote.

I've requested the lyrics be posted if possible. This is as much as I can decipher. (I am hard of hearing.) Please correct my mistakes. MY LAST DAY Glen Sherley Now I feel no fear as I sit here Though death is close at hand; And it's with bitter gall that my thoughts recall How I became this man. As I wait before the chamber door Well it seems I can hear the roll; Of the drums of death and I feel its breath Reach out and touch my soul. _____________ ___________ His voice is worn and ___?? His hair has silver streaks; But the awful spell of a death row cell Engulfs us as he speaks. He prays and talks to the One who walks Upon the waters spread; Of when He died how at His side A common thief was blessed. And to adhere, that Christ is near On this, my last day; And He would cleanse away my sins If I'd just kneel and pray. But death is pure and just as sure By hatchet, rope or gun; And I don't care to end with prayer A race that's all but run. Though at the brink I stop to think Of a cruel and painful youth; Of how I roamed about with faith devout In a fruitless quest for truth. When I was young my heart got hung In life's malicious snares; I was scorned and spurned until I learned That no one really cares. (By their artful whip?), I saw hypocrites defy both God and law; (Oh the money clasp, the key to match,?) In the name of some just cause. 'cause I was poor, the social door Was slammed hard in my face; Though my bag has changed as I walk the range From honor to disgrace. Now again I think of the rotten plank In a cotton farmer's shack; Of the futile prayers and the hostile stares For a man whose purse was slashed. Now the priest has said, "But friends, I'm glad That this is my last day." As they bind my hands with leather strands The priest begins to pray. At the foot of the stairs he ends his prayer With the words, "Thy will be done." As he backs away I can hear him say, "Prepare yourself, my son." Now the door has opened and the warden's spoken, "Please strap him in the chair." And as I walk close, emotion shows In the face of a young guard there. His hand is on the telephone But there'll be no reprieve or stay; Now the leather snaps on the cyanide trap To end this, my last day.

I’ve listened to this song many times so I think I know the lyrics pretty well anyone can correct me if I’m wrong though. I think it’s “he prayed and talked of the one who walked upon the water’s crest”, “By their artful wits I saw hypocrites defy both god and laws, so the money class can cheat the mass in the name of some just cause”, and “Now the priest is sad, but friends I’m glad that this is my last day”

I was given a CD in the Chapel of Dartmoor Prison ,on it was JC live at Folsom and Glen Sherley. it was 2005 and as i studied the Bible and my life , i had Glen Sherley on constant repeat for 2 years there was something about his voice that touched me and gave me great peace. I never heard this song before and never knew he took his life. Life is very much like it says in Ecclesiastes , all pointless pissing in the wind.

I've seen Glen on a show or two. He has a lot of talent, loved all his songs but he took the cowards way out. RIP Glen.
@dcherry59043 жыл бұрын
It takes a lot for someone to commit suicide. They are not cowards. They are people in a level of pain so unbearable and sadly there’s no treatment for them. In the 70s mental health was not someone people talked about like they do today so he probably had no one he felt he could talk to about. They say going to prison reforms criminals and sadly for most of those who serve long terms and/or are in and out since childhood it cripples them. They don’t know any of way of living. The outside is extremely difficult for them to adjust to and it’s horrifying to them. This man came out of prison a star who had one of the biggest names in music supporting him and even with all of that he could not find a way to feel safe and comfortable in his own skin. Shame on you for calling him a coward. You didn’t know his struggles or the uncomfortable, painful, scared feelings he must have felt.

Ya, it's too bad. I really liked this guy's singing and songwriting. Put's me in mind of Mel Street, sort of, who also took his own life in that same year. Life just demands more from some people than they can give, I suppose.

Wow. Read Marshall Grant's book, "I Was There When It Happened". Grant asserts that Glen Sherley was a pathological criminal who made murder threats toward members of Cash's cast. Cash eventually dismissed Sherley, who led a somewhat vagrant life until he died. Grant also believes that Cash did no service to Sherley by pulling him out of prison and casting a spotlight on him. It was all too much for him to handle.
