Short but sheer excellent entertainment. Johnny often times brought on guests that were a pleasant surprise. I saw Johnny Cash with Carter family and Statler Brothers in Baltimore civic center in 1970's Great show

I love this version , but the best first version I heard was from the New Lost city ramblers. Anyone know why you can't comment on any of their songs? JC is not old-time but he got a lot of material from the genre..?

Those two... How beautifully their voices blend for this gorgeous song. I cannot believe I don't have a memory of hearing them perform it together before. One of my uncles was a very good long-time friend of Dale Robertson, and because of that my parents and I got introduced to Dale at Goliad, Texas, when I was a child. He was a very kind and gentle man. No airs, either. And as kind to me as he was to my uncle and my parents.

This may be second to The Parable by Rick Neufield which he recorded in 71 but this one has deep emotions as well Glen Shirley was a person of talent which he sadly lived a tragic life he struggled to overcome but he simply had his moments and this song here may had been his best he wrote.
