Chris (@FreedomOnFoot) and I head off on a 4 day adventure, paddling along the Glenelg River in south-west Victoria. This is another journey in Roo, my Swift Cruiser 16.8 Pack... it rained a lot, but it was otherwise perfect paddling conditions. Another beautiful part of Australia, I highly recommend exploring it for yourself sometime soon!
If you're interested to give it a go and don't have your own boat I can recommend organising hire and/or transport to and from the river with Ali at Paestan Canoe Hire, she certainly made our lives a heck of a lot easier getting to and from the river, and also kept our cars secure while we were out there.
Check out Chris's hiking adventures and hiking gear reviews on his KZbin channel at / @freedomonfoot

So great to see the video from our Glenelg River trip! I was smiling all the way through this and I love your edit of the whole trip. We were so lucky with the still conditions and the river looked spectacular. Makes me want to get out and do another paddling adventure again. That was heaps of fun and those dinners each night were top notch camping tucker. Next trip I might even work up to a standing dive off the kayak in the middle of river. 🤣

🤣 I reckon you could pull it off mate... that was a very elegant swan dive for your first attempt! I had a ball too! Would definitely be up for another canoe camp with you if you wanted company 👍 I have a few more recipes to try out too 😜. Thanks again for a very memorable adventure on the Glenelg!

G'day everyone! I'm currently out on a 7-week expedition and will be posting the videos from that trip when I get home... I edited most of this video before I left though and had the chance to finish it off while sitting out a storm in a caravan park cabin today 🙂If you're looking for updates on my current expedition I'm posting weekly updates on facebook (@amyoutdoor) and instagram (@_amy_outdoors) 👍

Thanks Amy .Enjoyed every bit of this video and music. It was also interesting how the vegetation was changing on the way to the tidal zone .

Thank so much GR. Yes, the vegetation does change very quickly compared to other rivers and creeks I've paddled on, and it's so green compared to what I'm used to!

Great video Amy, I appreciate you dropping in the distances each day, now I know what I'm up for in the future. Loved all cooking and, having a friend along to laugh at and share the experience makes it all that much better. Looking forward to the next one.

Hi Amy. Great video and great conditions. Your hull is much smoother and should help with the paddling. We have been there many times as through trips and base camps with small children. you can paddle down from Dartmoor and also get out on the lake at the end. The reflections of the cliffs were great. Aren't those shacks an eyesore - and welcome to leeches! Nelson pub does a good feed at the end - but you are a gourmand! David

Cheers Luke! Yep, I love this little river... so diverse and beautiful! One day I intend to hike along the river section of the Great South West Walk to enjoy it from above... although truth be told, I'll probably wish I was in a canoe the whole time 😆

@@AmyOutdoorsit's always been appealing to me as I have done the coastal section of the gsww but not the river section. Did you find it pretty quiet on the river? Many boats?
@AmyOutdoors
@AmyOutdoors Жыл бұрын
@@Lukeslittletribe there were a few boats as we were there over the weekend. On our last 2 days (Monday and Tuesday) we noticed a lot less boats. All the boaties were very polite and obeyed the river rules too, which was very nice... not big wake to contend with. There are also a few no-wake zones. The zones designate for waterskiers in summer would be really busy though I imagine.

Hi Amy . That was almost the exact same camp sites I used last year . The Glenelg is an awesome place . I'm heading back myself in a couple months after the cold has left us . ROO probably has a few battle scars by now . What out for stardroppers. I found one just below the surface while following the bank just after Patterson's camp. Nearly holed my boat. Enjoy your seven weeks .
@AmyOutdoors
@AmyOutdoors Жыл бұрын
Yes, I've done it in the wind blown Spring and now in the cool Autumn. I've got 2 more seasons left to experience it in 😜 Gah, stardroppers! Yes, Ian ran aground on one in the same area as you in our first trip, it took a fair effort to get him off without puncturing the kayak... thabkfullynit was plastic. I did tent to stay further out in Roo on that last day, and thankfully didn't catch one! And yep, quite a few battle scars on Roo's shiny hull now... shows she's being used 😉

@@AmyOutdoors Amy how was the section from Dartmoor to moleside. Was it all paddleable or did it require portages ??? We launched at moleside because we were told by locals the upper section to Dartmoor was more like a drag thru the trees . ?? Any tips . We are heading over in sept.
@AmyOutdoors
@AmyOutdoors Жыл бұрын
@@turtlepurple9304 yes, we were told the same, which is why we started late on our first day at The Pines, which is only 4kms upstream of Moleside... that gave us most of the day to drive down to the Glenelg from home. Apparently upstream of The Pines it gets very tangled. It's a bit of a wild drive down to The Pines though... if I was driving I'd just start at Moleside. You could always spend 2 nights at moleside and travel upstream and back on the first day to see how far you can get 🤷‍♀️

Part two, now that I have reached the end. The river is roughly half way between Melbourne and Adelaide. It rises on the flanks of the Grampians/Gariwerd, and is trapped by Rocklands Reservoir (boatable), then flows through south-west Victoria with assorted minor tributaries. For southern Australians, easy access and great enjoyment. Wimmera River, flowing north instead of south also has some boatable bits. I have also taken Jessie II from Nelson to the mouth: an estuary reach, wide and shallow. For international viewers. Amy's videos should be giving you inspiration to plan a trip. As much Murray as you can fit, this wonderful river, some minor ones around Adelaide and Melbourne, and then all of the rivers associated with Gippsland Lakes (Vic.). NSW and Queensland have some great coastal rivers and lakes too. More Glenelg: www.flickr.com/photos/13175590@N00/51311338752 www.flickr.com/photos/13175590@N00/51990642207

Thanks so much for adding some context Roderick. Nelson to the mouth is another lovely little float if you get a nice calm sunny day too, it must've been nice to do it in Jessi II. Also love your suggestions for international tourists 😊👍
