Not for nothing but in the film "A Bronx Story" Robert DeNiro asks his son why he lied to him. The 8 year old son replys, "I thought I'd take a shot." The reply of admitting to the lie and the reasoning behind it was fine with the father. Even the child knew when to open his mouth.

That last moment is perfect - the moment Shelley senses weakness and decides to go in on Williamson. Worst mistake of his life.

Yes, that scene makes me think, for some reason, of the scene in "Taxi Driver" when Travis Bickle takes Betsy to a porn movie. People who shoot themselves in the foot. Maybe it has to do with them feeling they don't deserve good luck or feeling like they are guilty and they are punishing themselves with guaranteed failure. Shelley probably could've coasted through.

@@mja91352 Well, what is your definition of a 'character actor'? As I've commented before, every actor is (or should be) a character actor. Someone who's portrayed Macbeth, Hamlet and Shylock, especially as well as Sir Jonathan has, is very much a character actor. That said, it is quite an arbitrary term and means different things to different people.

Someone in the comments wrote about this performance as the last good performance by Al Pacino. This is a 1992 film. This is the rest: - Scent of Woman (Oscar for best actor in a leading role in 1993) - Carlito's Way (1993) - Heat (1995) - The Devil's Advocate (1997) - Donnie Brasco (1997) - Angels in America (Golden Globe and Emmy for best actor in 2004) - You don't know Jack (Golden Globe and Emmy for best actor in 2010) Not to mention The Insider, Any Given Sunday, Insomnia, The recruit and others great movies and great performances by Pacino. The problem with your comment is that it was a 'SCENT OF A WOMAN' That filled me with shocked horror at its pure awfulness. Stunningly bad, how this crap after al that genius be his reward. By reducing himself to a shallow *Schtick' without any human insight to real pathos like a bad advertisement not actual quality acting? That film is so bad it is pure cringe. It took the last Biden Trump debate to reach that level of nuclear vileness. It was pure self parody with zero humor times 1000. Simply dreadful. However on the other hand 'Carlito's Way' IS one of his very best films ever so in fairness; your main statement is still about 50% right.

Yes. Or look at Bryan Brown who played Luke O'Neil in The Thorn Birds. He had a confrontation with Father Ralph DiBricissart played by Richard Chamberlain and he called him a "Flaming Catholic Poof" which is Slang for Homosexual. Nobody knew at the time he was Gay. Then on the UK Prison Drama Bad Girls, Jim Fenner played by Jack Ellis called his former Associate Neil Grayling a "Poof" but James is Gay in Real Life and he had a Boy Toy named Tony on The Show.

Lots of people say Pacino overacts. I'll admit in some movies he takes it what would be a bit far for a lesser actor. For him though, it's just part of his style and it works! I can never get enough of his, top of the voice, monologues for some reason (Devil's Advocate is a good example). In this scene, I never thought he was overacting. Just as a previous poster said he's being "in your face", which the scene called for. Great movie. Great Actors.

Love how Lemmon, right at the end is so happy to have somebody ELSE to dump on. It’s a moment of pure joy for him.

I can watch this scene indefinitely. Some of the rawest and purest acting of all time. Each player in this boiler room is top notch in his craft. Calling a man a “Cunt” is the greatest way to demoralize him, LOL.
