Glenn was already 35 years old when she first appeared in "The World According to Garp" in 1982, a major career gamble for an actress considering the fickle nature of Hollywood and its offhanded treatment of women. @@davemillet4160 I've seen both "The Wife" and the first season of "Damages". Superb work. But Close is great in pretty much everything. I was only disappointed in her once, in "The Lion in Winter" 's TV remake. Somebody apparently decided to differentiate her from Hepburn by portraying Eleanor of Aquitaine as kind of a weepy dishrag, which completely threw off the balance of the battle between her and her estranged husband King Henry (Patrick Stewart) and their three sons. I'm inclined to blame the director, because Close absolutely has everything needed to do that role up brown. A real shame, slightly redeemed by a sparkling performance of the young King Phillip of France, the only clear upgrade on the original: Jonathan Rhys-Meyers in Timothy Dalton's role.

I agree. Integrity has been lost. Integrity is acting above all within one’s own ethics regardless of the consequences simply because one cannot sleep with themselves if they do not act within those bounds. "Man For All Seasons" was a favourite play in our school English Literature class in the 1960s; 3 of Sir Thomas Moore's principles still stay with me: when asked to sign the declaration, to save his life, but in his mind think otherwise he refuses; when accused of trying to be a martyr do read his response; & when his son-in-law says he'd break every law to catch the devil Moore replies " when the last law is down & the devil turns on you, where will you hid?" Lessons here for the likes of Kevin McCarthy, Lindsay Graham & the Republicans.

it’s true that A Man For All Seasons idealizes More too much. (And Hilary Mantel has a thing or two to say about that.) But in a way that makes him even more relevant and more engaging: he’s not necessarily a good man, but he finds his principles and stands his ground when it matters. Quite different from many politicians who tell themselves they’re good people, occasionally muttering what they know to be the truth, but they are easily bullied into forgetting their principles.

You should read Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel (audio book is fantastic, too). Ms. Mantel paints a very different picture of "Saint" Thomas More: a man so arrogant and full of himself that he believes he can manipulate and bend the will of a psychopathic Henry VIII.
@kathleenclark58772 жыл бұрын
Melanie: I have read it. It is really interesting to access wildly differing points of view based on the politically motivated reports of the time. Depending upon who was in power and whose favour you were currying. And … the “winners” tended to write the history. Another interesting read is Josephine Tey’s “The Daughter of Time”, which presents Richard III as an excellent leader and not the murderer of nephews as he is portrayed in Shakespeare’s play. In fact, she puts forward the argument that it was much more in Henry VII’s political benefit to do away with the two young princes. Whether it is THE most correct analysis of his character, Tey’s presentation of her argument is a fascinating unravelling of evidence which pretty much has me convinced … I think. Give it a go!

Melanie! What I didn’t point out about Tey’s novel is that is is presented as a murder mystery. One of Tey’s detectives (he is featured in a few of her novels) is wounded and in hospital and a friend decides to get him involved with the VERY cold case of the murder of the nephews. So as a bed ridden detective he begins to conduct the investigation through others who can do the foot work. If you like this genre, it really becomes quite “gripping” as the detective ( whose name lamentably escapes me at this moment) logically assesses information that is hundreds of years old and is largely hearsay. But, in my opinion, a fascinating read. Let me know what you think when you read it!
