Glenn was already 35 years old when she first appeared in "The World According to Garp" in 1982, a major career gamble for an actress considering the fickle nature of Hollywood and its offhanded treatment of women. Interestingly Paul Scofield, A Man for all Seasons, essentially "stole" the Oscar from Richard Burton for Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf. But agreed about GC. She has been nominated for Oscars without winning more times than anyone. Once upon a time that was true for Burton too.

@@davemillet4160 I've seen both "The Wife" and the first season of "Damages". Superb work. But Close is great in pretty much everything. I was only disappointed in her once, in "The Lion in Winter" 's TV remake. Somebody apparently decided to differentiate her from Hepburn by portraying Eleanor of Aquitaine as kind of a weepy dishrag, which completely threw off the balance of the battle between her and her estranged husband King Henry (Patrick Stewart) and their three sons. I'm inclined to blame the director, because Close absolutely has everything needed to do that role up brown. A real shame, slightly redeemed by a sparkling performance of the young King Phillip of France, the only clear upgrade on the original: Jonathan Rhys-Meyers in Timothy Dalton's role.

"A Man for All Seasons" is pretty much forgotten now but the original Broadway production won Tonys for Best Play, Best Director, and Best Actor. It's a shame that when people hear of Glenn Close the first thing they think of is how she doesn't have an Oscar. She has had a great career. I don't think a trophy she doesn't own should define her in the popular imagination. Oscars do not deserve the cultural importance they are given. You can't turn artistry into a competitive sport with winners and losers.

Excellent comment and observation. You're right on the mark. Frankly, it's all about money and very little to do with merit. Of course, there are exceptions but being snubbed by the Oscars does not define you as an actor or rate your place in motion picture history. A real serious actor who constantly works at honing his craft could care less about some stupid statue.

I agree. Integrity has been lost. Integrity is acting above all within one’s own ethics regardless of the consequences simply because one cannot sleep with themselves if they do not act within those bounds. It isn’t about recognition, popularity, or reward. It is about one’s own inner compass. We are too much about immediate reward and regard by others as if that is the measure of success/righteousness.

@lucky leprechaun No offense to any other actors but those who started out on stage usually wind up the best actors. There is such a big difference in honing your skills in front of a different 'live' audience every day, where there are no do-overs than making a movie where only the cast & crew are present & you can do multiple 'takes' of a scene. That's the reason people like Ms. Close & Mr. Washington return to the stage, to play to a live audience... it's a whole other experience, in acting.

it’s true that A Man For All Seasons idealizes More too much. (And Hilary Mantel has a thing or two to say about that.) "Man For All Seasons" was a favourite play in our school English Literature class in the 1960s; 3 of Sir Thomas Moore's principles still stay with me: when asked to sign the declaration, to save his life, but in his mind think otherwise he refuses; when accused of trying to be a martyr do read his response; & when his son-in-law says he'd break every law to catch the devil Moore replies " when the last law is down & the devil turns on you, where will you hid?" Lessons here for the likes of Kevin McCarthy, Lindsay Graham & the Republicans.

Melanie: I have read it. It is really interesting to access wildly differing points of view based on the politically motivated reports of the time. Depending upon who was in power and whose favour you were currying. And … the “winners” tended to write the history. Another interesting read is Josephine Tey’s “The Daughter of Time”, which presents Richard III as an excellent leader and not the murderer of nephews as he is portrayed in Shakespeare’s play. In fact, she puts forward the argument that it was much more in Henry VII’s political benefit to do away with the two young princes. Whether it is THE most correct analysis of his character, Tey’s presentation of her argument is a fascinating unravelling of evidence which pretty much has me convinced … I think. Give it a go!

Melanie! What I didn’t point out about Tey’s novel is that is is presented as a murder mystery. One of Tey’s detectives (he is featured in a few of her novels) is wounded and in hospital and a friend decides to get him involved with the VERY cold case of the murder of the nephews. So as a bed ridden detective he begins to conduct the investigation through others who can do the foot work. If you like this genre, it really becomes quite “gripping” as the detective ( whose name lamentably escapes me at this moment) logically assesses information that is hundreds of years old and is largely hearsay. But, in my opinion, a fascinating read. Let me know what you think when you read it!

All good, film wrapped etc. The original was where she manages to frame Douglas's character for murder, so she sort of 'wins' in the end. Then it didn't do well at test screenings and audiences wanted something where, essentially, "the crazy lady gets defeated by the man". 🤦‍♀️ Reportedly, Close haaaaated the changes and tried very hard not to have to film the ending we got on screen. It was not because of the divorce and remarriage of King Henry the VIII so much as it was a matter of no longer recognizing the romain pope as the head of the Christianity, as I understand history (of course the rest follows, the king's true purpose).

i love st Thomas More. only him and Fisher stood up against the Tyrany of the king of England long before 1776. let tyrants shake their iron rods and slavers clank their galking chains. we trust in god New Englands god forever Reign.

If Stephen Colbert knew the first thing about Sir Thomas More he would know what a vile human being he was.

Thomas More was cancelled because he wouldn't let himself be bullied by the King's fantasy that he could divorce his wife himself. If Colbert liked the movie, I don't think he understood it and how he actually stands for something else.

Isn't it hypocritical for activists like Glenn and Stephen to discuss not going back on principles when Hollywood is the cesspool of moral relativism?

Boy, the close captioning people know nothing about anyone or anything and don't bother to check because what does it matter, if someone might want to look up Thomas More et al.

My first experience of The Tempest was a BBC radio version with Schofield as Prospero, obviously. As gentle as a breeze, as furious as rolling thunder. *No one* has done it better.
