The Searchers: The Making of an America Legend, by Glenn Frankel.
In 1956 John Ford made The Searchers, a Western based on Alan Le May's 1954 novel, which was itself based on events from 1836, when Cynthia Ann Parker was kidnapped by Comanches. Frankel's investigation of this legendary-even archetypal-episode from the white conquest of the American West leads him to fresh assessments of both the country's foundational myths and Ford's enduring classic.
