Outstanding, epic, brave, legendary. Gutted for the Afghans, who in the process of witnessing history being made, saw their dreams slip away. They'll be back for sure. The talk quite rightly should be about Glenn, that full body cramp while on the deck, I, as others can relate to, 1 legged drives and static sweeps... so to experience all that and continue to leather the ball like he did is simply incredible. A real pleasure to watch. Chapeau!

I was very privileged as an Aussie for this to be my first game of the tournament. The greatest innings I've ever seen. I'm going to Netherlands vs England in Pune to give your boys a send off.

Disagree with Butcher about the mankad law. A mm outside the crease is still gaining an advantage, whether it's intentional or not. If a bowler is a mm beyond the crease, it's a no ball regardless of intention. Why should the intention of batters now determine whether they can be dismissed or not when this clearly isn't the same case for bowlers and no-balls?

The problem with Mankad is bowlers pretending to bowl a ball then running people out. At point of release (pretend) their in their ground

Well done on squeezing a bit about Maxwell in, hope it didn’t cut into the normal pontificating about the already eliminated England too much. Simply the best ODI innings ever, and it’s compared with Stokes, eh!

Afghanistan thrash Australia as roles are miraculously switched… Yes, readers, that should have been the headline I thought I would put up. But an inspired innings of pure masterclass from ‘bigshow’ Maxi, completely changed the entire scenario. From a potential ignominious trashing to one of the most breath-taking chases in the history of cricket. It just boggles your senses, What an incredible game this was for one team and what a heart-breaker it was for the other team. I had earlier mentioned that Afghanistan had two huge mountains to surmount, Australia and South Africa. I had also mentioned that they had the capability of challenging them. But, I never believed that they could thrash Australia -- a strong contender for the semi-finals - for two-thirds of the game and get soundly thrashed by them in the remaining crucial one-third to be hopelessly cast by the side lines. The match would have ended much earlier in favour of Afghanistan but for the lack of big match exposure. They began to get jittery as they inched closer to a famous victory. Undoubtedly, it was out and out Maxi’s day. He had the luck of his life in the initial part of his knock. But all credit to Maxwell as he skilfully rode his luck and then dominated Afghanistan who were beginning to lose confidence and self belief. In the end, it turned out to be just a walk in the park for Australia. However, Afghanistan can hold their heads high. Maxi’s 201 was worth more than its mere numerical value. It was a knock suffused with pain, endurance, courage, self-belief and, above all immense skill.

That's a good point about the reasons for such laws (mankading, time-out). The background is important

The worst hundred ever was actually scored in a Last Man Stands game i played in over the summer. Early September and its gone 8pm, pitch black on an overcast evening and the umpire insists we see out our 100 balls fielding. The opposition bat having retired at 50 and come back in smacked another 50 runs while us in the field had no clue where the ball was at any time, relying on the bowler to shout the fielding position it was heading for, in the hopes we could avoid getting hit by it. We still won and for that he gets my vote for worst hundred ever

Everyone (including myself) has known that the rise of 20/20 means the end of 50 over cricket. Is it actually possible that 50 over ODIs could be the one survivor of the 3 formats?

Dropped catches lose it for Afghanistan after a marvellous display. 17-year old Pakistan batsman Abdul Aziz died after being hit on the heart in the first innings of a match and the scorebook for the 2nd innings read, Abdul Aziz (absent dead). In 1984 we named our club Abdul Aziz Invitation XI. The tournament just gave Stokes time to grow his ginger beard.

Surely the safety of Mathews, having a helmet that works OK, should have over-ridden the appeal for timed out. The umpires are correct in following the letter of the law, but surely the players' well-being is more important. The law needs tweaking to allow for mitigating circumstances. Also, the timed-out law was initially brought in to stop players from wasting time when their teams were playing for a draw.

Arguably, one of the best odi innings ever but to say it is the best as some say is debatable, well Indian captain Kapil Dev 175* off 138 balls with 16 fours and six sixes against Zimbabwe in a crucial must win game in a world cup 1983 at Tunbridge wells when his team is 17/5 will not be knocked out of contention...fun fact it was not even recorded at that time.

Butch seemed to have smoked something before he came on. On what basis could the umpire turn the appeal down based on the evidence they had only he knows. N then comparing this to Mankad was another poor comment which went uncontested coz everybody on the panel seems to be ready to just agree with each other. Common guys its ok to have different view points to debate on!

Imagine you went out with the boys for a round and it turned into a legendary bender and everyone is carrying money just for one round. The man who rises upto this tricky situation and bails out the boys by paying for the presidential suite, 20gms of coke, 45 year old vintage wine, 26 black truffle dishes and 32 champagne bottles is Glenn Maxwell. A true legend.

For a channel calling itself Wisden, ignorance of the rules is woeful. The umpires could have suspended play by rule 2.7.1, 2.7.2 and:or 2.8.2 regarding a foreseeable safety risk. A batter is entitled to protection, and if their safety equipment fails they are entitled to have it replaced rather than risk physical injury. Simple.

Hi Jay. The main podcast recording finished at 2pm UK time - about 12/13 overs into Australia's innings - while the daily segment was recorded in the immediate aftermath of the game finishing. Apologies for our inability to time travel! We would obviously have spent way longer on Maxwell if the knock had happened during, or before, the main show!

i disagree with the logic from butcher sorry. If one mm isn’t taking an advantage, why is stumping a. Ode of dismissal even ? If the batsman turns around and says “I wasn’t really attempting a run or trying to manipulate the length of the ball” the batter can’t be stumped right ? LBW exists as a mode of dismissal for batters to not just kick the ball away, which they used to back in the day. So if a batsman doesn’t intentionally do it, he can’t be out lbw by this logic.

Obviously as a living, breathing, sentient human I have no love for the Australian cricket team. Glen maxwell is also quite clearly a classless slogger. Add to that the glorious underdog story that is Afghanistan. And yet as a cricket fan I love a stat beyond all else, and boy, what a stat this was. So reluctantly, thank you australia, that was pretty memorable.

People will act in how they are incentivised. The more pressure they are under the more likely they are to. Having poorly designed rules because "it will probably never happen" is lazy. Punishing players for following their incentives under a vague "spirit of the game" is lazy. This applies to timed out, to Mankad, to Olympians who were disqualified after a poorly designed tournament structure meant that winning their last pool game was devastating to their medal chances. Get smart people in the room, and create rules properly that align incentives to behaviour and activity we want to see. Finally... blaming the umpires for enforcing the poor rules given them correctly is the laziest of all.
