Lyrics:
Why do robins sing in December,
Long before the springtime is due?
And even though it's snowing,
Violets are growing,
I know why and so do you.
Why do breezes sigh ev'ry evening,
Whispering your name as they do?
And why have I the feeling
Stars are on my ceiling?
I know why and so do you.
When you smile at me,
I hear gypsy violins;
When you dance with me,
I'm in heaven when the music begins.
I can see the sun when it's raining,
Hiding ev'ry cloud from my view;
And why do I see rainbows
When you're in my arms?
I know why and so do you.

I was born and raised in Michigan. My mother was born on December 21st, 1934. She was 8 years old in 1942. That was during World War II, and 1942 was the year that the movie Orchestra Wives was released. My favorite song from the movie was I've Got a Gal from Kalamazoo. Hey there, Tex, how's your new romance, the one you met at the campus dance ? Wait until you see if you'll agree that hometown gal's the only one for me !! I don't mean to boast, but I think she's the toast of Kalamazoo. I'll make my bid with that freckle faced kid I'm hurrying to. A, B, C, D, E, F, G, I've got a gal from Kalamazoo !! I'm 70 years old, and I really enjoy all of those wonderful songs from the 1940's !! 😊😊

My son [28 months] and I are listening to this after watching "Memphis Belle", he starts to dance and tries to sing along. When he sings "gypsy violins" it's magic. As for class and the country, it starts at home.......... It's a choice to raise our children with it. Some sadly choose not too.

moloch49, No need to take umbrage, it was just a passing comment that in the 1940's many family's lives were devastated by the war. In other terms I agree with you, in many respects society was much better in the 1940's and indeed the 1950's when the war was over. This a great lyric from a gentler age, and an excellent foxtrot. The joy of this music is that every syllable can be heard

Clarinet playing the lead melody with a tenor sax playing the same melodic line an octave lower and harmony filled in by the rest of the saxes. NO band has ever played it to get the same sound that the original Miller band did. The sound is unmistaken and for all time belongs to Glenn Miller.

@@Rogue.Warrior No, I haven't seen the real Memphis Belle, but in 1999, when I was 11 years old, my dad, brothers and I went to the Museum of Flight in Seattle and met Captain Robert Morgan, the man who flew the Memphis Belle during WW2. It was quite an experience and we have an autographed photo of him with his crew that was taken after their last mission, as well as photos we took of him with us. I understand he died a few years ago. RIP Robert Morgan. Furthermore, in 2011, the Museum of Flight renovated a B-17 f and opened it up for tours on a lottery basis. I kept checking in when they called the winning tickets. After the 3rd time, the docent said she would let me go in, even though my ticket didn't win, because I was one of the few that actually cared. Many people who's tickets won didn't show up. That plane was immaculate! It was renovated to what it would have been as it rolled out of the Boeing plant in February, 1943! And, that very plane is the one in the dance scene in the movie! You know, where the tail gunner sings "Danny Boy." Lastly, on June 24, 2017, I flew in both the B-17, "909", and the B-24, "Witchcraft," of the Collings Foundation. I will always remember that date, because it takes care of both planes! I didn't plan it that way, its just how it worked. So incredible!

The opening number from Glenn's first feature film, "Sun Valley Serenade" (1941), incorporating his theme, "Moonlight Serenade", just before the segue into "I Know Why", written by Mack Gordon & Harry Warren. Pat Friday is actually singing for Lynn Bari...backing her are Miller's vocal group, "The Modernaires". Gordon "Tex" Beneke plays the sax solo in the middle...Milton Berle, playing Glenn's agent, is "comedy relief" during the film.

The voice of Pat Friday who dubbed for Lynn Bari, gave this vocal a poignacy no one will ever do better. This is a perfect example of why GM & His Orchestra were so far ahead of everyone else. This is an unbelievably sophisticated melody, with so many chord/ rhythm changes, it boggles the mind. Harry Warren & Mack Gordon out did themselves with this masterpiece-- We'll not see or hear music like this, ever again. Wolfsky9

It's important to mention the composer of "I Know Why": Mr. Harry Warren. He wrote so many hit songs for Glenn Miller, show numbers like "Chattanooga Choo-Choo" & "I've Got A Gal In Kalamazoo", the timeless ballads "At Last" & "Serenade In Blue", etc. etc. all for the two musical comedies "Sun Valley Serenade" & "Orchestra Wives" ... pure genius!

Yes, this beautiful song was a favourite of my Dad and Mom during World War Two, and, as a young boy in British India (Bombay), I remember the 78 r.p.m. record being murdered on our old winding gramophone. It always brings back memories of my parents and those times, and it is difficult to keep back the tears whenever I hear it. I have a lovely "Joe Loss" version of it played in "Glenn Miller" style, with the vocalist trying to sound as American as possible.

Tune by the great Harry Warren(I Had the Craziest Dream, by Helen Forrest) words by Mack Gordon. Captures the wonder, joy and reticence of young love like no other song. terfle1106: I have it on a pre-recorded audio cassette tape entitled: "Joe Loss plays Glen Miller". I wish I could play it for you. Whenever I play it, I look up at the sky and I say: "Dad & Mom, that's for you". Yes, India is a land of extreme contrasts, and Bombay (now Mumbai), which was built by the British, is a very modern city.

This reminds me of my early childhood years. It's strange that the older you get, the more you want to go back to those days.

Pat Friday was the voice for Lynn Bari, whenever she sang in movies. However, John Payne started out as a singer before he became a movie star (Miracle On 34th St.).
