GLENN MILLER ORCHESTRA
lunedì, 15 dicembre 2014
ora inizio 20.45
@Teatro Verdi Firenze
A comporre la scaletta dello show i grandi classici del genere come “Moonlight Serenade”, “A String Of Pearls”, “Little Brown Jug”, “Pennsylvania 6-5000”, “In The Mood” e molte altri.
Le armonie proprie della swing era porteranno l’immaginazione del pubblico a rivivere romantiche scene d’amore in perfetto stile anni ’40.

I'm a bit younger than you I think. My older brother and I used to dance to this back in the late 50s and then we watched American bandstand everyday. We always watched and danced to the music on the show. We were pretty good dancers he and I. When I was little also watched the Dorsey Brothers I believe on Monday nights. Its a shame most kids now don't have great music like this, and yes we had FUN!

Me pregunto....

Unfortunately, the seasoned musicians of today can't handle this kind of music. I tried this piece with a High School Jazz band. Needless to say they couldn't muster though the first chorus, though they are great with modern material.

Matthew Wallenhorst The thing is that Miller had a knack for using secondary or tertiary Rags, that have since fallen out of style in favor of swing without the secondary or tertiary Rag element. This particular piece is an example of a secondary rag with an ABC form. As such the emphasis doesn't fall within the strict swing time, when played correctly, because swing is usually eight-to-the-bar and rag is usually sixteen-to-the-bar. Here, we have what is First a rag, and then a swing, so this piece is sixteen-to-the-bar. (not talking about time-sig, but rather talking about principle subdivision-to-the-count, which is the speed of the majority of the notes within a given piece, if the piece is played at speed, and we assume common time.. As a reference, a Military March is usually eight-to-bar in ABC form) Because the faster we move, the more we are inclined to Loose the swing time, it becomes that 90 per cent of the time, the high school level musician will drop the swing rhythm in favor of speed, which really destroys the charm of the whole piece.

I'm confused here? From what I've seen almost all major jazz songs came out well ago, and are still played to this day. I still enjoy going to band shows, like CancerBlows, where they still play music from well before 90's

wow. thanks for posting! This is the closest I have found to the original GM orchestra. Where is the clarinet? A pity the recording is not audiophile quality. It's a great tribute, but I think we may never hear again the sound and soul of the real Glenn Miller.

My son was in the band in H.S. His Junior year the jazz band played a full concert of swing, including a couple of the kids dancing at one point. That was when his director was a fan of the "dress to impress" phrase. My son completely enjoyed this time in band. When he wants to wake up his Saxophone "chops" this is his go to

If it's any consolation, my Father who was a musician back in the 40s to early 60s, told me that this type of music was extremely hard to learn, but once you mastered it, you wondered why you'd waited "this long" (a week!) before you finally got it. I would listen to this type of music any day, rather than today's rock music.

He gave up the equivalent of a multi-million dollar career to serve his country. He enlisted in the Army at the start of October 1942, was quickly transferred to the Army Air Forces, and eventually built a 50-person orchestra that made morale-boosting performances and broadcasts in the US. He requested a transfer to the UK to be closer to the troops, and was sent there with the band in mid-1944 where they reportedly performed for over 800K service members. Six months later he was authorized to take the orchestra to Paris. He was supposed to travel there on Dec. 12, ahead of the band, to make final preparations for them to follow. The UK was hit by some of the worst weather in decades which prevented him from travelling as scheduled. Increasingly worried about the delay, he opted to hitch a ride with a poker buddy who had a personal pilot who was willing to fly despite the weather. What no one knew was that the plane had a defective fuel system AND that the weather over the Channel wasn't suitable for nonessential travel. Their plane was sighted heading out over the Channel, but never landed in Paris. Recent research has debunked all of the conspiracy theories as well as the long-held claim that the plane was hit by bombs dropped by returning RAF Lancasters. It's now thought that the plane crashed due to fuel-system failure, pilot error in bad weather, or possibly both. And popular music is infinitely poorer.
