I must say Harri, you are on a roll with Glenn Miller and I for one, could not be happier! This music just makes my heart feel good! Be sure and watch The Glenn Miller Story if you can, lots of music in it....Thank you! My mom had Glenn Miller & his orchestra record on the Blue Bird label 78 rpm. Those were some records. Her favorite song was The White Cliffs of Dover....
@hannejeppesen18095 ай бұрын
My parents music as well. I grew up in Denmark, and my parents lived through the Germany occupation. They would listen to Vera Lynn, White Cliff of Dover and one of my favorites "We'll meet again". Vera Lynn died a few years ago she was 102 I believe.

Drums, upright bass, rhythm guitar, and piano were the foundation of all those big bands of the 40's. This tradition was carried over up until Doc Severson's band on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.
@Bassman23535 ай бұрын
Lyle Lovett's Large Band continues it still - though Leland Sklar is currently on electric bass, Victor Krauss previously appearing on upright bass. The '90s version of the Large Band was phenomenal, is still wonderful today.

You were right about the war going on... Glen was killed in the war, his plane disappeared off the coast of France.
@jimcady93095 ай бұрын
I didn't see your comment when I made mine. Blown out of the sky by British or American bombers returning to the UK from the Continent!
@rockymountainjazzfan18225 ай бұрын
@@jimcady9309 The most plausible theory is that U.S. and British bombers that had not dropped all of their bombs over Germany would drop them over the English Channel when returning to England--the bombers could not land safely with their bomb loads, especially if the planes had battle damage. Neither the bombers or Miller's plane would have known that either was in the area--and Miller's small plane was likely flying at much lower altitude than the bombers. Likely a bomb physically hit Miller's plane, which would have caused the plane to crash, even if the bomb didn't detonate, a detonation being unlikely.
@jimcady93095 ай бұрын
yeah, that's what I wrote, but in more detail. Jetisonning ordnance before landing.@@rockymountainjazzfan1822
@timblessing28155 ай бұрын
Actually, we now believe that the most likely cause was an ice-up of the carburetor or the wings--most likely the carburetor. Given that Glenn took off from Twinwood Farms, the flights of which we know would have not been in the right place at the right time.

Glad you're doing the big bands... What a great sound and some of the best musicians in the business. Glenn Miller had a very unique sound and was a great band to dance to. You need to check out "In The Mood" by the Miller band...

LOL .... To me, Glenn Miller was the best in swing. That "oooooh, WAH, oooooh, WAH" going on in the background just makes you jump around in your seat. Takes you to the dance floor and smoothly holding someone close, then WHAM! The feet are off the floor and flying, then close again. Absolutely fantastic stuff.

Glenn heard the Erskin Hawkins Band play their song Tuxedo Juction while on a double bill, and decided he liked it. In 1940, Glenn recorded the song, which sold 100,000 records in the first week. With the gentle swinging horns, highly attractive melody, building slowly, to a strong finale. The quiet trombone passages were done with a plunger in front of their instruments followed immediately by the loud brass ensemble. Just so entertaining and pleasing to listen to. Glenn named his ranch in California, Tuxedo Junction. Of course it was a Number 1 hit, perfection. Thanks Harri. A perfect night of entertainment. Keep it coming. ❤❤ Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

What amazes me is that this great Hi-fidelity stereo sound was pulled off a 78RM acetate record or master wax and enhanced with today's technology! It was also recorded live Direct to Disk,, that means it was recorded and cut in one process directly!
@rkomada885 ай бұрын
This is not the original 78 rpm issue from 1942. This version was recorded on tape, in stereo, and issued on 33rpm vinyl.
@artmanjohn25 ай бұрын
@@rkomada88You may be right, the stereo was too good but I have heard some music from the day like for instance a box set of Doris Day of most of her recordings. They were remastered to a point that they sound almost like they were just recorded recently! I got a box set of Benny Goodman, same thing. Thanks

My Dad used to listen to big band music as he rocked or bounced me to sleep. What WONDERFUL memories!! This music, which had only probably been around 20 years old at the time, is the music in my earliest childhood memories.

I have an aging great aunt that really loved Glenn Miller, I play him for her every time I can. We forget how the forces of war shaped a generation that is sadly slipping away from us. This was the music of love and procreation, lest we forget, it is how we got here, and she would share stories like when her father interrupted her first kiss on the porch from her first date. I have not heard anything that can top it, though I do like modern music.
@jimcady93095 ай бұрын
Okay, yes, the bassist was "walking" as we often do in jazz and swing music. BTW, Glenn Miller died while in the Army. He was flying over the Channel, and his plane disappeared. Many years later, I think they figured out that a flight of bombers returning without having dropped all their bombs jettisoned them above his plane (unknowingly), and probably blasted him out of the sky. (Bombers cannot land with bombs, or they might blow themselves up).

It's amazing how upbeat the music was considering how dark the times were. They almost had no business being so optimistic, but one of the most enduring lessons from the Greatest Generation is very useful today: stay strong through dark times.

Love this trip down "Swing Lane". You need to react to Glen Miller's "American Patrol". It's the song the band was playing in an outdoor concert in the movie "The Glen Miller Story" starring Jimmy Stewart in England or Europe when the Nazis started bombing. The band never stopped playing. Very inspirational.

"Orchestra Wives" (1942, black and white) starring Glen Miller and his band, George Montgomery, and Ann Rutherford is a movie to be watched after you have first reacted to 6 or 8 or 10 of Miller's best, delaying just so the movie doesn't impede on your Miller band reactions. And then, saving the best for last, you eventually must watch the black and white 1941 musical comedy "Sun Valley Serenade" starring Glen Miller and his band and John Payne and 3 time Olympic gold medalist in figure skating Sonja Henie. A pretty good movie, and great music.

Have enjoyed Miller since I was little as my mother was a big fan. She had a lovely voice, had perfect pitch and played the piano wonderfully. Too bad none of her kids inherited her talent! She hated fifties music, (probably because she equated it with a decade of morning sickness), but embraced rock n roll, David Bowie and Jethro Tull! I credit her with my eclectic taste in music but I like fifties music as well!

Just read some comments, somebody suggested Brian Setzer...DO IT! His Stray Cats got popular with a Rockabilly style, they play with a full big band and it's amazing! He gets the best pros in LA to come out and play with him...I saw a Christmas concert and was floored...find The Nutcracker or anything off the "Dirty Boogie" album! This is a great synthesis between olde school big band and what's going on now. Big Phat Band is another, or, if you want to explore DEEPLY, Matt Catingub's "High Tech Big Band"...

Great music, good on you for exploring it. But, this is NOT the original issue released to the public on 78rpm in 1942. Very good remake, not the original, way too much echo/reverb. Fun fact: this was the first "gold" record, for selling over 1 million copies.
