I found this video extremely helpful. Thank you for putting it together. Im a DIY homeowner who is hoping to build a 500sq ft addition on a pier and beam foundation so ive been researching code for the deck.

I read an old article once that said even ancient ship builders never exceeded either 10’ or 12’ joists spans depending on wood types .

Should floor joists be quarter sawn or flat (plain) sawn for maximum strength?

Do the same rules apply when it comes to ramps? I want to build a 20ft ramp and use single pieces of 2x6 or 2x8 but not sure if that’s ok or if I have to use two pieces and have a support underneath where they meet. Thx

This is a funny video I have a shed 50years old 9 ft walls block foundation clear span NO POSTS supports using 2x6s 3ft on center that go from the wall to the centre both sides 4 12 pitch strapped with 1 by 4s metal roof. I have seen 2ft of snow plus on this roof and it is a straight as the day it was built, you folks that push the education building code seriously think of the waste and of coarse you will brag how it with stood a 9 earthquake or a 250 mile per hr hurricane but sensible people don t build in areas and then infect us with there stupid code of building serious a DECK a you parking a d9 bulldozer for a conversation piece
