Want to see how Patrick fishes a glide bait? - • How to Fish a Glide Ba...
One of the most exciting and increasingly popular ways to target big bass, the glide bait has taken the bass fishing world by storm. Here, Bassmaster Elite Series pro, Patrick Walters, gives his tips on the proper setup for fishing glide baits. When Patrick is throwing bigger baits, such as the Storm Arashi Glide, he first will swap the factory-assembled trebles with Decoy brand Quad trebles to gain maximum hooking power and decrease the odds of fish tossing the bait. Traditionally he will leave the snap on the front of the glide bait and this bait is ready to go. For long casts and slow winding over great distances, Patrick uses straight 20lb Sufix fluorocarbon. When around cover, such as grass or laydowns, and fishing the bait with quarter turns to get it to dart side to side, he will use 65lb Sufix 832 braid to a 10-foot 25lb Sufix fluorocarbon leader. As for the rod, he reaches for the Daiwa Tatula Elite 8'0" swimbait rod, which has a heavy action and his line is spooled on the brute Daiwa Tatula Elite 300. When throwing around cover and making quarter turns, Patrick likes a high speed 8.1:1 gear ratio to allow that bait to really kick and turn, while not moving it very far on those quarter handle turns. Once the fish is hooked, Patrick suggest really powering that bass back to the boat to prevent the fish from gaining any momentum, leverage, or slack line to toss the glide bait.

How long of a leader do you tie and how do you prevent it from catching in the guides?
@bassutopia
@bassutopia Жыл бұрын
A good starting point would be a 8 to 10 foot leader. All connection knots are going to make some noise going through the guides, but the two that seem to pass the easiest would be the Alberto and the FG knots.

I just got some owner welded quick snaps #1 size, only rated for 33 pounds. Kinda scared it’s a little weak what snaps do you use

We'd prefer a little heavier duty snap for glide baits. The Owner all-purpose snap in size #3 is a favorite of ours

Would u recommend this rod or the Daiwa rebellion for throwing 1-6 oz hard glidebaits

If you plan on throwing glide baits up to 6 ounces, the Tatula Elite swimbait rod is going to be the better tool for the job.

Actually there's a better grade on the market in suffix and I can't think of it and when I do because I bought some I will put it back in the comments. Why so heavy of braid I use that size braids on my catfish rods I felt like you could get away with 20 lb braided line would be thinner and better what say you? And you use fluoro which I've really never done any of that so it is new to me

Yes, there is a new version of the Tatula Elites that was just released! However, the swimbait rod is not one that we carry at this time

Can you work glide baits on spinning gear? Always see everyone use baitcasters but just received first 2 glide baits in mail today and dont normally fish baitcasters.

We would recommend using a baitcasting setup for glide baits. There aren't many spinning rods in the bass industry that would handle lures of this size. However if you're more comfortable with a spinning setup, there may be some options in the saltwater or musky world that would suit this technique.

@bassutopia actually was going to use them in saltwater. Just bought 2 and haven't had chance to try out. I was going to use my 8' shimano teramar xh but wasn't sure if reel made a difference with the action

Doesn't the long leader thats less test pound than the braid defeat the purpose of the strength of the braid?
@bassutopia
@bassutopia 2 жыл бұрын
In this case, the braid is being used for its other benefits such as casting distance, sensitivity, and low stretch. The fluorocarbon leader acts as a shock absorber that is also much less visible in the water.

@@bassutopia oh ok, thanks. Wait, but why 65 lb then, Couldn't you go lower? I guess my question is, even though the braid is for other purposes other than the strength in this situation, do you still get the benefit of the braid strength, even with such a much weaker florocabon leader? Sorry, just trying to learn.

A lot of it is personal preference. 65lb braid is roughly the same diameter as 17lb monofilament or fluorocarbon which can make for a smooth transition to your leader material. Additionally, when you set the hook on a fish with thinner braid it has a tendency to dig into the rest of your spool which can cause some problems when you make your next cast. Thicker braid tends to dig into your spool less.

The gear ratio info/ opinions seem to be all over the place. I have no clue what to get lol
@bassutopia
@bassutopia Жыл бұрын
If you're unsure what gear ratio to get, something in the 7.1:1 range is a good place to be. It will be fast enough to pick up line and get fish to the boat quickly, but it's not too fast where it would be difficult to slow roll a bait.
