I was going to buy a Ronin too, but after watching Devin's glidecam stuff I've decided I'm going to buy a glidecam instead. So much more value for what you pay for compares to the ronin, and no batteries!

Im trying to decide between the Glidecam and one of those one handed gimbals
@CrazyAmazingDesigns6 жыл бұрын
Here is my comment about the handheld Gimbals. I have been using a Ronin-M for a couple years now and LOVE it. With that said the thing is pretty heavy, Especially after using it as a multi camera, handling it for an hour or 2-3 show. I however have no experience with the hand held gimbals I am just concerned they would get to heavy to hold your DSLR on one with one hand. I have a DJI Osmo for my iPhone and its pretty cool. -Nathan Robb
@ChaoticMatters6 жыл бұрын
Crazy Amazing Designs well I'm pretty sure it's not nearly as heavy as the ronin. You can also put them down without running to where the stand is. I think with the one handed gimbals I might be able to pull focus without buying a focus system cause I can have the other hand on the lens. On the downside you don't have much room to put a monitor. My atomos is probably too heavy
@ghostbaum6 жыл бұрын
i think both are great. I use both for different things. basically for me it's if you plan to slow mo use a gimbal. if you plan to playback full speed use a steadicam

I just scored a Devin Graham Signature Series Glidecam on e-Bay for $192.00 + shipping. OK it was a Sunday night on a 3 day holiday weekend. It would have gone for much, much more at a better time. No, I won't sell it. I can't wait to get my hands on it. I tried a cheap unit for about 1 week before I sent it back. I never could get it to balance well w/ my Nikon D5300. Thanks.

People who fangirl Glidecam so much over electronic gimbals need to understand a thing: THEY ARE DIFFERENT TOOLS. Nobody says that a gimbal is better over a GC just because it is more expensive. They are different tools for different jobs. A good filmmaker does not underestimate or overestimate a tool based on price or popular belief, but learns to use each for a specific purpose. Everybody is looking for a confirmation that a GC is just as good, or better than an electronic gimbal and they don't need to spend extra. You can calm down, it's worse for some things and better for others (as the video points very well about robotic but smoother movement). Great video, keep it up!

Doesn't look like it... Best auto focus out there for DSLR cameras. Im just wondering as some of these shots in this video he gets further away from the subject he set his focus on (like the skating at the end) and yet its still in focus?
@aqib.a.a75136 жыл бұрын
probably due to a slow apature or he had his hands on the lens, just guessing
@SpektrikMusic6 жыл бұрын
The wider the lens the wider the depth of field is, the more narrower the more shallow it is. The slower the aperture (f8+) the wider the depth of field the faster the aperture the shallower. So for daytime action stuff I'm guessing g he would be shooting with a wide lens at f8+ so the depth of field would be larger and they won't be out of focus when they move away from the camera.
@SpektrikMusic6 жыл бұрын
Autofocus is still very unreliable for a lot of video work. If you have a look at Casey neistat vlogs, plenty of his shots are out of focus.

I bought a gimbal because I wanted to use an 85mm @f1.4. I also needed a wireless follow focus. I like the usability of the Glidecam. you can get move movements out of the Glidecam that is very hard with an electronic gimbal.

Please go trough the topic of overall camera weight and how that affect stabilization and if you need to add any extra "dead" weight on top if you use a light camera? Also what drop time do you use? Hope you have a great day! Regards
@Ben-fq1lj6 жыл бұрын
"2 seconds" - parker walbeck said in a live video when I asked him the same question. Fyi he helped film with devin for a while, so I would consider his advice close to what devin probably taught him. I find that 2 seconds works really well for me. Also, I own a sony a7sii and I would say that unless the camera/lens weight doesn't meet the minimum requirements, you don't have to add more weight necessarily unless you've removed all other variables that might be giving you bad results.
@sharphillfilms94386 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot! Seen on guy on youtube called "Paul Web" explaining that close to NO drop time is what gives best results, but it's sooo hard if the weight distribution changes even so slightly..kzbin.info/www/bejne/nnrTk4Booc6rb9k Anyway it's a tradeoff from smoothness and functionality i guess ;) Have a good day!
@Ben-fq1lj6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I saw his video on that, I personally don't know how he gets smooth shots with a drop time like that. Its great for very slow shots, but fast shots forget it
@ghostbaum6 жыл бұрын
the heavier your overall setup the steadier it will be. that's why in movies steadicams are practically like gimbals cuz they have a really heavy setup.
@Ben-fq1lj6 жыл бұрын
But they use arms too most of the time. Most people can't lift and hold that much weight unless they're a massive body builder. In wind heavier loads help, but the problem with the no drop time like Parker Walbeck said is that you have to have really good hand tapping/control of the gimbal, otherwise it sways too easily when doing a moving pan/circle shot.

I think I've heard you acknowledge this problem in a different video... but my limited experience with a glidecam has been that it does not stand up well in high winds. I'm totally down with the idea of capturing organic movement and am really interested in investing more time into working with glidecams, but I was just curious if you, Devin, or anyone else had developed techniques/methods to combat that. Because it seems like once you get the technique down (and the wind-blowing aside) the glidecam is the swiss army knife of stabilizing rigs.

I agree in most of the points! But you have a 1D X II... Did you ever tried out Dual Pixel autofocus? I have a 5D IV and it’s amazing! It can handle focus at 1.4 and it’s just so great! Canon is famous for it’s AF... But I have to agree: on the RED you are usually shoot on [...] But impressing! I mean at 8K/4K you really see when something is a little bit out of focus. I guess you will close the apurture?

Hi Devin, I was inspired by you to start some "devin-like-glidecam-travel-filmmaking" and improved with the glidecam a lot already. There are still some points I would love to know from a person with so much experience: - how do you set up your droptime for different shots? or always the same? - do you rebalance when you zoom? it doesn't look like it in the video. do you compensate the off-balance with your off hand then? - in my videos I often see "the start" of the panning for example. how to avoid it? - how to handle the correct alignment of the weights to camera-line in the terrain, where you have no horizontal plane? is it very bad? Thank you in advance.
