yea, they dont have a triangular gear like most engine powered planes, so they actually roll a little to the side. just like the u2 does. but after coming to a stop they opened the canopy, whichade it look like a full flip over
@Shojohn11Ай бұрын
It's possible but more likely when a glider comes to a stop even a quick stop like that it does not have landing gear like a normal aircraft just a wheel underneath so it will lay down either on the right or the left side where the wingtip touches the ground

I had the same thing happen to me when I was in the air cadets. Pilot wasn't fazed though. Came down in a field opposite the airfield.

Not too many trees around helps. It being a flight school drill makes it a lot less dangerous too. I had a winch cable break on my first glider flight ever. Just along for the ride. We missed the trees by a few feet only. I was ready to do it again right after. It's not the speed that kills, but the angle.

@possumverde29 күн бұрын
@@Soknik01Perhaps. He still had forward momentum when it happened though and you'd think he'd wait until a full stop before opening it. To me, it looked more like his right wing may have dipped due to the rough terrain causing it to catch the ground and pull him that way. At such a low speed, there wouldn't necessarily have been any significant damage to the glider thus making it a "clean" landing.

A part of the training the instructor released the tow shortly after takeoff.
@richyrichk9 ай бұрын
Title, "Winch Launch" might help. The camera field of view does not make it obvious to this old tow pilot who also was a winch launch glider pilot a few times. Don't put in jump cuts of the forward view- the amount of pitch change from winch to glide speed is much larger than power pilots experience- show as much forward as you did rear. Flying looked clean. NIce seeing parachutes on.

Good cockpit drill, but It would be better to wait a while after broke the rope with unhook. In this configuration rope can spin around the stabilizer what can become so dangerous. Just count 1-2-3 after saving airspeed and then pull the release handle 😀

@dariusz0783 ай бұрын
I think It is rope between winch spool and glider that pull the glider from the ground to provide initial take off. If it breaks shortly after the take off, you don't have enough speed to continue flight and you have to land asap
@ashleym28782 ай бұрын
It's designed not too strong just in case there's a situation where the relies fails. And for whatever reason the glider gives a huge jult that could take down both aircraft better for the rope to break. Also the tow plane can relies the rope on its end

@pebble24Ай бұрын
sometimes they're metal and sometimes regular ropes. they're strong as tho, it's incredibly hard to actually break a rope. in this case it looks like the instructor released the rope to simulate a launch failure. however in actual flying a small metal piece called a weak link may break to stop you overstressing the airframe

I'm always impressed by the way pilots are able to keep their composer in bad situations. Interesting how such a thing can be trained into people. Equally impressive with special operations military and even just regular infantry. I think they call it "stress inoculation" or something like that. Just exposing people to more and more stressful situations and learning how to remain calm and work through it to a solution. Apparently breathing techniques are very useful.

Autsch...
