Glimpses of the Kuthiramalika Palace with Prince Rama Varma!

The musical descendant of Maharaja Swathi Thirunal Rama Varma (1813 - 1846) our beloved Varma ji aka Prince Rama Varma, gives us a few glimpses of the magnificent Kuthiramalika Palace at Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, South India, where Maharaja Swathi Thirunal spent the last days of his short but eventful life, in this charming little video, lovingly made by Varma ji.

I have seen you growing up from a toddler to a handsome prince and musician. I had the fortune to accompany the 'Arat' twice every year from 1970 through 1985 along with my father and grandfather. My grandfather was in charge of the restoration of Padmanabha swamy temple after the fire boke out in 1940 and had close association with the Royal family. Your mom and her sister attended my wedding too. May God bless you and the entire royal family with health, prosperity and happiness.

We visited Thiruvananthapuram recently and were amazed at both the temple and the Kuthiramalika palace. One reason we loved the palace was the guidance of a wonderful guide at the palace who made the visit extremely warm and pleasant.

When i visited India from London , went to the Palace in August 2022 and had the guided tour. AMAZING PLACE. Mr Sreekumar took us around English, malayalam and tamil, lots of interesting exhibits, music and dance I think octagonal halla at two ends. The lawn and the view of the heritage Palace is tranquil. Seperately Had a nice member of staff with glasses who himself volunteered and showed me around the Palace museum and all the photographs of the royal family, rich history of Travancore and colonial past also. Followed this up with Padhmanabha swamy Darshan. Must do itinerary , takes total 5 hours at leisure. Would love to visit during sangeethotsav and listen to Prince and/or Amrutha Venkatesh sing Bogeendra shaayinam with raaga alapanai and swarams in traditional guruvayoor vellakku light in the evening.

I dont know why people go to Padmanabhaswamy Temple and not got to the kuthiramalika. There needs to be a bigger signboard!! The palace is probably the best tourist monument in the whole of Kerala.

Had the bhagyam of visiting the Kuthiramalika, few years ago. The tour was a conducted one. Splendour and divinity in the same place.. to think of Swathi Thirunal having the gopura dharsan and composing the krithis … not to be missed . Thank you very much

The video made refreshing moments for me. We had a great opportunity of undergoing a Varnam workshop at Kuthiramalika Palace this year during Second week of May conducted by Gopika Varma madam for classical dance.. The palace is soooooooooo beautiful with unique collections of Maharaja. The architecture of the building is marvelous. As said it is so cool inside. The floor is very very smooth and infact it shines we can feel Maharaja Swathi Thirunal's attachment for performing arts here. It is an altogether different experience. Just not able to express in a few words. Waiting to visit the Palace again.

Wow!!!!! So nice of you to create this video. One of my dream destinations, may be the most favorite place of mine is this palace. From my first visit in 1990s , I have been greatly attracted to the serene atmosphere of this place, the beauty, the ambience.....everything. I had the fortune to enter the meditation room of Swathi Thirunal those days when it was permitted. We can see Padmanabha Swamy temple clearly from there. I am living in Trivandrum since last forty years and never find time to visit this glorious place but i have visited many palaces in north india. What a paradoxical situation. we malayalies all ways may be like this ignoring our glorious people values and history very near to us and go for in search of distant culture. I think the reason for this is that Kerala palaces are dwelling places, not huge monumental structures built with slave labor that you find in other places. The rulers of the princely states of Kerala were more rational, people-oriented, humane, and practical. They did not build such wasteful monumental structures wasting human labor and resources, but utility oriented artistically designed beautiful family homes, without ornamentation and ostentation, for the living and working. Generally speaking, tourists are interested in awe-inspiring monumental structures, mostly.
