According to tradition, this church with no transept was founded in the 7th century by Saint.Regnobert, Bishop of Bayeux. Its magnificence was enhanced by its central position in the heart of the city.
As the parish church for Caen's harbour district, it received generous donations from its wealthy parishioners, who funded extensions and embellishments over the centuries.
As it now stands, the church bears witness to changing Norman architectural styles between the 13th and the 16th century.
After the war, its famous spire was rebuilt as impressive as ever. The church is also famous for its chevet, built on wooden piles in the first half of the 16th century in an ornate Italian style.
