@CreativeCreatorCreatesАй бұрын
I *cringed* when Ru did that. I grew up with the Muppets and Jim Henson. The Swedish chef was a goofy take on what people thought the Swedish accent sounded like, only made exaggerated and goofy. So of course, my generation mimicked it and thought it was funny. I didn’t know to mind it as a kid, but using that at Vanity made me feel like I was taking crazy pills. But I guess IKEA, Swedish meatballs, and the Swedish chef are Ru’s main concept of Sweden. I don’t think Ru is fully capable of adjusting with the times and how things have changed. @bgriffiths1840Ай бұрын
Oh I think we realize and have realized for a long time. We are just bad people so we watch anyway. We knew she-mail wasn't ok. We knew pressuring Puerto Rican girls to be stereotypes wasn't ok. We knew Ru was off her rocker when she said trans people had no place in drag race because it's like the olympics and that hormones are like performance enhancing drugs and Peppermint can only compete because she doesn't have implants. We've known pressuring contestants to spill very intimate life details they have been clear they won't discuss in order to get ratings is wrong. We've known for 16 years. They just keep being horrible and making the same horrible content because we choose to keep consuming it.
@donniesumling8549Ай бұрын
We already do with seasons 2-4
@kyleydiamondАй бұрын
yes but we also have to take both shows in their times. Pop culture is a reflection of the culture. America is hugely problematic. I can't think of one thing that's problematic about RPDR- objectifying and hypersexualizing people, utilizing racism for humor, reducing people to one catch phrase, trying to keep up with fast changing gender ideals and not always succeeding, having a violent mob of an online fanbase that feels entitled to be catered to... that isn't Americana. one of your presidential candidates is literally playing up an old stereotype that immigrants eat housepets to try to turn people against others and some of the comment sections I've seen show it's working. like you guys are not great as a stereotype. I have been watching RPDR for 15 years and if you're a youth, you might have no concept of what culture was like 15 years ago, and how forward the show was. how much of what we do now and how we talk now that is so much more progressive BECAUSE of the show and the contestants and the way it brought these conversations up. Drag Race didn't come out of a society that has been watching Drag Race for 15 years, it came out of extreme homophobia and really limited LGBTQ+ presentation in the media and a nation that deeply hates femininity. so absolutely, study media from the past to get information about your society/culture and see how we've changed, see what still needs to change to be loving to everyone. but have some grace. we have to learn to say "this for then was innovative, this for now is problematic, the difference is we've grown" and our growth is either more or less loving, more or less accepting. and try to hold a place of love for the media that helped take us from one step to the other. like same with ANTM- I watched it from the start because I'm 5'10 and love fashion and it isn't not problematic- I still think I'm overweight when I'm a size 6 because of media like this. but it wasn't like culture and society was perfect and this show was the only problematic message I was getting. this show was EXACTLY how fatphobic we were at the time. it was exactly as insensitive to other cultures, exactly as abusive of reality show contestants, exactly as critical and mean in our obsession about how women look and what we're valued for. I don't want kids growing up to get the messages I got from ANTM, but it was born out of the reality of the fashion industry and then through seeing it (esp seeing it come out with a Black Woman as a host) we were able to critique these things and hopefully change the culture. the work I do now is in teaching with a decolonial mindframe, and it's funny to meet people who also do it who will hyper-critique you, rush to cancel people, expect you to know absolutely everything and say the perfect thing from every angle at every moment, hold others to a standard of perfection... colonial values. that we're weaponizing against each other under this idea that we're fighting for different values. some people would jump at me for admitting I sometimes still struggle with body issues and want to teach you to look at your body with love, but reality is that's a person in this world rn. of which I am one. it'll take me time and even then maybe it'll always jump back in- pressuring myself to pretend like I never hear a voice telling me I'm fat so that people who need to believe we can be "fixed" in whatever time frame will not attack me to be better with no empathy is a whole thing. just something to think about with this idea of looking back to find problems- look back with grace and a big picture in mind.
@kyleydiamondАй бұрын
actually a GREAT tool for studying culture like this is the Mindy Project. In it, Mindy says and does things that every single White Man around her would have done with absolutely no one seeing or saying anything wrong with it. but when we see a woman do those same things- a South Asian woman even, we find her bratty or entitled or racist or whatever. labels that are applied to her BEHAVIOR, when we don't judge those same behaviors in others. (I'm her same age and worked in super male-centered work places and have SEEN IT and HEARD it and omg. if the youth haven't we are so grateful) this is the kind of subversion I think Ru used to uphold and it is sad that this season is showing an American Obsession, but Ru has also been obsessed with Hollywood his whole life and I get that that's the North Star in his world. thanks for the comment to chat it out!

My two cents on the "stereotypes for comedy" situation: I would appreciate if a queen who struggles with comedy tries to rely on their country's stereotypes because it's a safe way to make Ru laugh. I don't like it when a queen is funny and prepared and suddenly feels pressured to take Rupaul's advice because it often helps. For example I loved when Rupaul told Jorgeous to try the masculine character for the roast because she was struggling with comedy and it had a satisfying ending, but I hate it when a queen has all planned and she is confident with what she's gonna do and Rupaul suggests to rely on stereotypes because he doesn't vibe with the character.

I don't get it. They show Kween and Kitty to throwing nasty digs at Nelly every chance they get, but we never get shown any justification for WHY they think Nelly is the spawn of Satan. As a result, Nelly has fallen into the role of the underdog who's being ganged up on, but instead of following the typical underdog story arc by giving her wins when they're deserved, they keep rewarding the two queens who are being nasty to her without any provocation (or at least that's what we're being shown, I HAVE to believe that Kitty and Kween had their neutral to sweet moments too, we just inexplicably aren't being shown that.) It's confusing, infuriating, and doesn't do a single queen on the show any favors. I don't even know what to think except why tf am I still tuning in for this cringefest. And that doesn't even get into the xenophobia. I guess I'm a glutton for punishment.

Kitty should be ashamed of herself!! Princess Diana NEVER looked like a shy little child with her head down and speaking in that ridiculous voice. During the early years with Charles she was always smiling, having a wonderful time supporting her husband the best way she knew how. She was thrust into public life at the tender age of NINETEEN for the most anticipated wedding since QEII, AND she was given no instruction on how to be a Royal Wife. Charles didn’t teach her ANYTHING And that dress kitty was wearing while acting like a rotten child was dubbed the revenge dress and she wore it with a huge smile on her face standing tall with her head held high. After the divorce Diana continued her charity work being the first GLOBAL celebrity to pick up and hug children with the aids virus and shook the hands of many adults with the disease ~ gloveless. She was instrumental in building the UK’s first unit that was to care for strictly for people with HIV/AIDS. And by doing so she helped calm the hysteria surrounding the disease that was rife at the time. The ONLY time Diana was photographed looking anything less than polished is when she fell asleep at a Royal Engagement where she fell asleep due to being pregnant with William and her pregnancy had not yet been announced. I think kitty better wear a hat and sunglasses returning to the UK after such a despicable display of one of if not the most influential and beloved women in the world. #disgusted.

I agree with everything you said. I did not find the "Margherita Pizza" slogan funny, it was a very simplistic stereotype of Italian people. And RuPaul and some of the other queens calling Gala or Nelly "Miss Mexico" or "Miss Italy" is just lazy, ignorant and rude. Kween saying that Gala's perfume would smell like tacos just made me very uncomfortable. I get that she's trying to make RuPaul laugh but she should know better than to make a joke like that. The English speaking queens experience a huge privilege not just on the show but in popular culture in general. American and British traditions and conventions dominate almost all international or global events and instead of acknowledging this on the show and trying to even the playing field for the non-English speaking queens, WoW has doubled down and reinforced stereotypes, resorted to unfair treatment and not accommodating for language and cultural diversity in the challenges. Frankly, it is disgusting the way the show has behaved towards the amazing queens they have cast and the brilliant cultures they represent.

@@dezles6056 exactly what ru is saying by playing into stereotypes - if you're going to understand something, it'll be a stereotype. Because you are not familiar with the nuances of a country, because we dont know the celebrity they pick - playing on a quip of culture or identity is going to be recognised by more people than not. Mexican? Tacos. Italy? Pizza. Germany? Meat and cheese. America? Ice cream and hamburgers. The same with an impersonation: we have culture and cultural symbolisn and people recognise them. You want people to find something funny for this challenge, they need to be able to find something they can relate to or understand.
