The whole "debtors prison" is way out of proportion. Is for debts the are result of comiting a crime. In my country (Portugal), if you get a fine instead of a prison sentence for comiting a crime, and you don't pay the fine, you will go to jail. Even if someone is sentenced to probation, one of the conditions may be to pay restitution to the victim or to an organization (for crimes like DIU), and if you don't pay, you will go to jail. So, it's kinda of a similar system to the mississippi one, but not an independent one.

It is crazy to me that the cause given in that commentary is the lack of wealth redistribution AKA taxe and government involvement. This is a Keynesian POV that is THE REAL CAUSE of successive economic crisis since the beginning of the 20th century and has been strongly exacerbated by the 1971 bretton wood accord. We need FIXED money supply backed by a HARD MONEY that way debt will be limited by the amount of currency existing (which is fixed) and inflation will disappear. The world complains about the rat race and blame private sector while the governments are pushing for the rate race to exist (Kenesyanism, 2 % inflation rate as a target etc.). Deflation and recession are not negative.

It's owed to the Private Central Banks of each Country, which in turn all report to the Bank of International Settlements (BIS)... Also any Government and Person that holds Bonds from the US Inc, which is owed in the Federal Reserve Note, which is the World's Reserve FIAT Currency, for now, and it's the private Federal Reserve Bank / Trust that creates it...
