"That day, for no particular reason, I decided to go for a little ride. So I rode to the end of the road. And when I got there, I thought maybe I'd ride to the end of town. And when I got there, I thought maybe I'd just ride across Green Bow County. And I figured since I rode this far, maybe I'd just ride across the great state of Alabama! And that's what I did: I rode clear across Alabama. No particular reason, I just kept on going. I rode clear to the ocean. And when I got there, I figured since I'd gone this far, might as well turn around, just keep on goin'. When I got to another ocean, I figured since I'd gone this far, might as well just turn back, keep right on goin'. When I got tired, I slept. When I got hungry, I ate. When I had to go, you know...I went." "And so...you just rode!" "...Yeah!"

my parents do a lot a cycle touring usually 1 or 2, 2 to 3 week trips a year and they go with the opposite approach. They don't really care about speed and have trailers. they just really enjoy cycling and seeing people. I did my own. trip a couple of years back and loaded up 2 paniers and a front box. and that was ideal in my eyes. enough comfert and enough speed. I guess what I'm saying is that there is no right formula, just get out and try a trip!

I just watched this video, some years after it was produced. I have done a lot of camping in remote parts of Australia and some of his advice, particularly around what to sleep on, I really dont agree with. A decent, comfortable sleeping mat (I have used an Exped Synmat 7 for years), and a lightweight pillow (the Exped one is excellent and weighs very little), really improves the quality of your sleep. Maybe the ground is softer in Europe, but it is often flint hard where I go camping. Other than that I enjoyed the video.

In 1978 I rode across USA. Coming out of grocery store one day, a woman with big legs came up to me and said, 'I was about to say that you are the first bike tourist I've seen for some time who is not overpacked, but now I see that you are too". She went on to explain that she'd been basically bike touring continuously for about 30 years, on a fixed gear track bike, which she showed me. In those years, she'd met many people, and basically just couch surfed from one town to the next, washing dishes, waitressing as needed, etc. She said that her knees were beginning to hurt, and she was considering a motorbike of some sort.

That is some fantastic enlightenment, you don't really need a heavy, sluggish, steel frame, alloy rim touring bike with the racks and bulky bags... That's just what I thought! Like the idea of using deep section rims and a proper carbon road bike. Every watt is a watt, the efficiency is the king on long journeys.
@hpvspeedmachine41834 жыл бұрын
Clearly you don't have a clue about bike touring
@xuchenglin62564 жыл бұрын
Hpv Speedmachine There are different types of bike touring, the one with heavy rack bags and carrying the kitchen is just one of it. The key point is the tour, they place you visit and how to get there. Not every place you travel is in a wild, in more civilized places, you don’t need to carry much.
@ryand1413 жыл бұрын
Don't listen to him. Go light. DO NOT buy panniers. Get insurance. Start with small trips and build up. Even just a tarp would do for shelter in summer.
@xuchenglin62563 жыл бұрын
@@ryand141 Agreed. Not a bikepacker but did some long distance travels. What I like is finally someone came out and say you could do all this on a carbon road bike with deep aero wheels (disc brake of course). I can't imagine go for a 15kg touring bike... It's quite amazing how much a saddlebag and other bag options could carry these days. Aside from weight, aero do make a difference, at least for me.
@ryand1413 жыл бұрын
@@xuchenglin6256 The only thing I would say about Carbon bikes is that if they break, you're really screwed, i.e. end of tour, however that's the chance you take. I'd much rather have a light, comfortable tour than a bulky, heavy tour. Trust me from experience, I injured myself taking too much gear in panniers and it's so cumbersome. Having said that, you can get good quality steel road bikes and titanium which are light also. With a lighter bike, you're simply going to see way more than you would otherwise.

Yeah, a bit amateur of GCN not to provide his kit list. From freeze-framing, I gleaned that the tent is a Terra Nova Laser Ultra 1. The sleeping bag is a Yeti but the image is unclear so I can't make out the model name (looks like 'Commanyou', but Google returns nothing with that name) - according to his 2016 book it's a Yeti Passion One which is the same colour as the one in the video, but maybe it changed, dunno. Bags all look like Apidura, to me. Hope that helps!

Yeah this seems more like so called "credit card touring" but with staying in a tent -- he's still stopping off in civilization at cafes and pubs for prepared food. That's all a fine pursuit, and probably a lot of fun, but I associate the term "bikepacking" with more of a self-supported, backcountry type of touring, or with occasional supply stops. Maybe that's just my associations with the terms.
