I swear by the Lezyne Sport Drive HP Hand Pump. From experience, this pump works very well for a road bike. Pumped up a tire fast enough, not racing, without much effort. Loved the flexible hose (saves the valve) & it is compact. Comes in 2 lengths, under water bottle mounting & different finishes. Other version I use on my grocery getter is the Topeak Road Morph G Pump. This bike mount pump is large, about 1/2 the top tube length, has a in line air gauge, Handle & foot peg fold out, pumps up tire without a large effort. Has come in handy many times for me away from my floor pump.

My saddle bag has 1 tube, 1 CO2 cartridge, 1 multitool, a patch kit, 1 tire lever, 1 master link, a $20 bill and an old sock used as a rag. I also have a frame pump on my water bottle cage mount. If I have a sportive or will be riding solo long distance, I toss a 2nd tube in a pocket. I've never been out of tubes or under-tooled.

Don't forget to look after your pump. A well maintained pump shouldn't let you down. I've had my mini-pump for about 15 years, and although it looks a bit tatty now it works as good as new. Maybe once or twice a year, just give it a quick service. Dismantle it (they normally just unscrew) then give it a wipe out with some kitchen paper or a clean rag to get rid or any dirt, moisture and old grease. You'd be amazed how much crap gets in there; especially bike mounted pumps. Once clean apply a thin film of silicone grease to the washers and seals then reassemble. Make sure you tighten it up properly though. Last thing you want is it coming apart on a ride and losing half of it. It's a 5 minute job, but it's a small sacrifice to make compared to suffering a puncture 20 miles from home and finding your pump doesn't work.

Is the Topeak Road Morph G a mini pump or classed as a full-sized hand pump? Is it much better to pump than a 160 psi mini pump like the Topeak Race Rocket HP? I'm looking for a pump for bikepacking touring for tubeless 30c tires, so I'd need something for normal maintenance pumping while on the road.

I carry two co2 cartridges with me during my rides, and the inflater to go with them of course. I have thought about getting a mini pump for a while now because of the reusability and when I do I will likely go with the convenience of the smaller size over the efficiency of a larger pump. I don't often puncture, but now that I've put that out into the world I should probably make up my mind on a mini pump sooner rather than later. Great video as always gentlemen.

Co2 are by far the best option, they've changed my riding life. The comment in the video about them being limited is true, however all you need to do is get a MTB sized co2. I have a Specialized Roubaix, and live on the coast, and unfortunately flats are very common with all the road junk. I fine the large co2 will inflate a tyre at least 3 times, total life saver.

One thing with pocket-sized pumps makes them unattractive. Many of them fit to valve directly without hose. Due to nature of stroke motion, it is too easy to break fragile Presta valve. Most of my woes on the road are just that: pocket-sized pump deformes thin head and the way back home becomes a nightmare.

@@celovekobicnii2343 The problem with the hose ones, thanks to the "removable core" crap, is just that: They (i.e. the mini-pumps with the hose that you screw-on to the valve) remove the valve-core :-( . In Schrader valves I didn't have a problem with the pumps that had a hose that you screwed-on to the valve, but in Presta valves (specifically, the Presta valves that have removable-cores; not all Presta-valves have removable-cores, thank goodness), I do (because the valve-core has a tendency to get pulled along with the screwable/unscrewable hose-plug-attachment thing).

You can buy a screw on Presta to Schrader adapter at your local shop for a couple of bucks. Let's you use your Schrader only pump. Also let's you use air hose at any service station. You can actually just keep it screwed onto the Presta valve so you don't forget it.

+experiment54, the girthier it is, the more pressure you would have to apply when you pump. If it is too girthy (say it looked like a tuna can), the typical cyclist might be too light to force 100psi into a tire.

A long skinny pump is like a low gear. It takes the same amount of energy go up the hill/pump up the tyre and a high gear/girthy pump but it puts less strain on you muscles.

After using many mini pumps, the one that really impressed me is the Specialized Air Tool Road Pump. In the end, is not the size of the pump that matter as much as how efficient it can pump. Many of these mini pumps are not very efficient. They have lost motion in the beginning of each stroke just to get up to pressure due to excess dead volume inside the pump. That alone tires you out. Add to that, there is part to part friction. The Specialized was incredibly efficient. Every inch of motion translate instantly to added air in the tire. Trust me on this one, you will not be disappointed.

@@Hashslingingslasher- I still think the Specialized Air Tool is a great pump after getting several flats. I would recommend it. It does not take much effort to get up to pressure unlike various other mini-pumps I had over the years. You don't feel like you are getting a work out just pumping. It will probably get up to around 80psi before pumping gets pretty difficult, but that is enough for me.

@@Hashslingingslasher- I try not to shock the drivetrain, and I never broke a chain before. I don't think regular riding will break a chain, but a shock will. I have seen broken freewheel and spokes from shock. Freewheel is not engaged in between clicks. I move the pedal until freewheel is engaged, then I can apply as much power as I have. If you apply power before the freewheel is engaged, then there is a shock when the freewheel engages. I think that is how chains break. I do carry a spare quick link. My kid had a very loose quick link, and it managed to get undone during a ride.

I had a topeak turbo morph, the 'floor pump' that was shown in this video and it was amazing. It's as long as my top tube and served me well as a daily pump. Now I have a lezyne pressure drive, also a great pump only smaller. You gotta take your puncture protection into consideration too. I stopped using the turbo morph after installing Gatorskins.

I have a Lezyne mini pump with a valve connector that's reversible, threaded and slip on. When I continue to pump up the tyre at home with a shop pump I'm starting from 80/90psi. I tend to get 5-8 punctures per year on local roads. I can't really justify the cost of CO2 versus a little elbow grease. Also, I believe it's better for the environment using a regular pump, when you consider the manufacturing of aluminium canisters and their likelihood of being recycled (which is probably low, even if you do throw them in household recycling).

I find most of my time is spent putting in the inner tube to ensure I don't pinch flat. Pumping it up is actually pretty short. In winter I carry both pump and one CO2 in case I flat where it's miserable to fix. Last summer I flatted at Doheny Beach, CA on a 75 degree day. Sometimes time is not important...

I've got a Lezyne Pressure Drive Mini ABS Pump - Small that i've luckily never needed to use, does presto and schrader valves and can go up to 120psi. Small enough to fit in my jersey and not notice it when out on a ride. Bargain at £20.

Hey guys.. I've been known to tear my valve stem using a rigid system.. well it's happened more than once.. not a fan of that particular design since no matter how hard I try to isolate the movement of the pump from the stem by holding the pump and the tire/rim to minimize stress to the stem.. I have a small pump on my downtube and I think for me anyways the most important thing is to have a gauge on it. Only had to use it once this past season over more than 8000km. Just make sure if on your bike you wont loose it on bad and bumpy rides. I never inflate to more than 90lb with a small pump. I also cary a small addapter good for gas station into my saddle bag.

I carry both a Lezyne Road Drive that is bolted on my bike (and still is almost hidden by a bottle) and a C02 cartridge. If i have time to just pump i use the Lezyne but if i'm at a Sportive i use the CO2. But *knock on wood* i only had like 2 flats in 2015 and both where very close to home after a ride.

I had a leyzyne pump as my first pump. Piece of crap. Whenever I got a tube up to pressure, when I unscrewed the pump head from the valve, it unscrewed the valve core with it. After my first puncture I snapped it in half and threw it in the bin. Would not recommend, do yourself a favour and stay away from leyzyne pumps, get yourself a Topeak.

+Ollie Smith If you tighten your valve cores this isn't an issue with tool or pliers. The advantage of screwing to the valve core is that you can get a good seal and flexibility especially if the valve doesn't have much clearance from the rim. I like leyzne products but each to their own

For road bike is more comfortable to using the pump with switcher of high and low influence volume. I'm using now crankbrothers sterling gl and very like this) some brands just write what you can do up to 90 - 100 psi? but haven't some switcher its not good(

Lezyne pumps that screw on can all too easily unscrew continental inner tube valves after inflation. Really annoying after you put a lot of effort in to inflating the inner tube. I saw this happen on so many group rides I now carry a valve removal tool to tighten the valves or suggest they borrow a different pump. Spoken to a few people about this issue and found a few people had thought it was a faulty inner tube and binned them.
