How to repair Neo Geo AES Power & Video RAM fault
A detailed tutorial video on replacing the power components on an early revision AES console. Also swapping out the Video RAM (I keep calling it Palette RAM in the video!) to fix yellow boot screen. Finally replacing the RGB caps with 470uF values for the CXA1145P video encoder

Yes it was a very expensive unit in 1990. I remember a mate from a wealthy family had one with two joysticks which we played back then. The graphics at the time were insane to have in a home console.

Nice to see you found the same thing as I did with the 100uF caps - they had all deteriorated! Mine we measuring around 40uF on two different cap meters, so clearly they didn't use great caps in these.

wow! of all the times ive seen in videos chips swapped out its never been as simple a fix!

The built-in diag screen pointed to the video ram with a Yellow screen. So it was a good place to start after inspecting the traces. On other boards i've seen nearby traces cut but in this case, it all looked perfect so I went ahead with the total replacement. I kept sating Palette ram in the video, so I hope that wasn't confusing.

Great job! Note though that you replaced the fast VRAM not the Palette RAM! The Palette RAM is the longer chips on the very right hand side of the board. The 100uF caps should be swapped out with 470uF on the video side, but 68ohm resistors dont seem to make much difference at all. I've still got the original resistors in mine but swapped the caps for 470uF and it gives a picture as good as my CMVS.

No worries lol - It's easily done, and the fix would be the same (just different chips) anyway. The fast VRAM holds some of the sprite data (which sprites to draw - not the actual sprite) so that's why the sprites just don't appear. I suspect if you had a palette RAM fault the colours would be messed up or something.

You only have to watch my 4 slot repair video to realise its easy to get the chips mixed up. I targetted the palette RAM chips when I was looking for the fast VRAM chip...

I honestly struggled with this early revision the whole time I had it as the layout was very odd compared to the later boards.

Incredible video. I have an AES copy of Alpha Mission 2 that has garbled graphical issues and it's the cart itself and not the system. I've cleaned the contacts with both alcohol and a hi polymer eraser and still no luck. I was told by the previous owner who believes the caps inside the cart need to be replaced but I don't know. If you have any ideas or solutions to this problem feel free to share. Note I find it interesting that the armor select screen seems to function normally and that's it. The rest of the game has glitched graphics because I used a level select code to see how much of the game was glitching and it's the entire game except for the armor select screen so if you got solutions send me what you know bud I'd appreciate it thanks.👍😎👌

And I believe you could have left it on PAL btw and just used the jumper to switch to 60hz - you will get better colours with PAL 60 vs NTSC 60.

That's an interesting idea I could have tried. I'm not sure if all TVs support PAL60 though? RGB turned out great so I gave up fixing the composhite. I suspect there was a line running under the encoder causing the dot crawl but I couldn't be sure. Seems like a bad design with these first revisions.

+Global Garage it's probably already at 60hz, either that or you've now got ntsc 50? I am assuming it was an ntsc model and that mod was done to output pal. The question is did they change to 50hz too, if not it was displaying already at 60 so your TV supports pal 60. All modern TVs support it and many of the later CRTs.

I notice the unit has a 4.43MHz colour crystal (the crystal that had the ground wire across to the pin7 on the Sony cxa1145p) which would also need changing back to a 3.58MHz crystal, this should remove the composite video shimmering issue I believe. (I have an AES board of this same early revision)

Mine also had the yellow screen, and the number is like 000088 ( I bought it broken) ... so is even older, the top case has broken so I founded another one from an earlier edition, but it doesn't fit perfect. I wish I could fix mine too. Mine still has those power transistors and resistor, you are lacking.

I should point out that Yellow is screen RAM/VRAM, not Palette RAM. Green is PaletteRAM/Color RAM. The chips you point to do appear to be screen RAM/VRAM, which is consistent with the yellow screen. I’m currently dealing with one green screen AES and one yellow screen AES. Swapped in known-good palette RAM and VRAM chips but no change. :(

You didn't have to cut the sockets at all, really. Ejecting four pins from each is simple and it looks like there is clearance for the extra length.

I almost went that way, but I decided to cut them instead and show how I do it as often there's no room.
