Here in Australia, there was an old fellow the locals of Far North Queensland called Tarzan. He spent decades with a hessian sack over his shoulder, slowly jogging a loop around a bunch of towns. He had camps all over and he'd just duck off the road into one of his rainforest camps. He was extremely grizzled and had a deep chestnut brown permanent tan from the Queensland sun. His real name is Michael Fomenko and he had an incredible life that most only dream of living....especially that nomadic lifestyle that he was originally heavily vilified for, but now is what people dream about doing. His father was a professor and his mother Russian royalty apparently. He also once paddled a hand made dugout canoe to Papua New Guinea. An amazing life by any metric. I recently read about 'The Leatherman' in the US. Both were clearly cut from the same cloth a century apart. I'm glad that people's attitudes have changed towards these modern day hermits to a more positive view of them. We used to cherish these forest dwelling old dudes for their knowledge and experience, as well as their wisdom ....... a wise-ard, or a 'wizard' in modern language. The archetype came from exactly the kind of men like the awesome old dude in this vid. The Wise-ard of Stanley Park.

Last year I bought two grocery shopping bags that an artist in Siberia, Vladstudio, had produced from his artwork. There are online companies that can transfer art to many common items. That could be one way to share his wonderful artwork. He can get to the public library to scan his art. I mean, he used to live with so little per year, now at $600 per month he can even get some help to do high-quality scans into png files then have a company transfer them on demand to coffee mugs, t-shirts, posters, shopping bags, etc. Have some framed as pieces of art, so many things are possible.

This is not something to celebrate. He's not "living his best life" and being homeless is a public park is not "quirky ", "cool" and "harming nobody". If he was truly living "off-grid" in a cabin in the wilderness, I'd be right there with him....but that not what this is. Letting people sleep outdoors in unsanitary conditions, exposed to the weather year round is not compassionate. It's cruel. It robs people of health and dignity and it robs the general population of enjoyment of the parks. He became malnourished and diseased from "living his best life". This is inhumane.

Yes, it is sad. I dislike that housing in BC has become about profit and wealth creation, rather than a place to dwell peacefully. This profit driven housing works very well for some (I have several friends who own more than one home), and creates housing insecurity for many (I have friends who would be in financial stress if they lost their rent controlled apartments). I really hope he can find something safe, secure and supportive. Meantime, a pretty awesome fellow, creative, inspiring and resilient. I really like his comment ‘life goes on.’ That said, I know from personal experience it is very hard to thrive if you are not in supportive housing, and sometimes that means not many options unless you have the money to pay, or a unicorn in a family member or friend who can offer shelter during a time of need. I hope they do a follow up story in 2 or 3 months.

@stephenletts49429 ай бұрын
you are projecting. being that it is a personnel choice, not sure about " inhumane" ...one needs to look at the word and its context to him being homeless. there is a word that is not a word yet and that is " unhousable" . this is a perfect example of one who is "unhousable" ... when we removed institutionalization as an option, and cant seem to find criminality within the DTES, the victims being victimized, supplying drugs to people outside of the safe drug situation. Chris could be in housing in DTES, is this more humane? like i said one needs to reevaluate the meaning of humanity- "inhumane ".
