“I’m a car guy”: Biden announces $900 million for electric vehicle charging stations

At the Detroit Auto Show on Wednesday, U.S. President Joe Biden highlighted automakers' increasing shift to electric vehicles and billions of dollars in new investments in battery plants. During his speech, he announced the approval of the first $900 million in U.S. funding to build EV charging stations in 35 states as part of a $1 trillion infrastructure law approved last November.
“The great American road trip is going to be fully electrified,” Biden said. “Whether you're driving coast-to-coast along I-10 or I-75 here in Michigan. Charging stations will be up and easy to find as gas stations are now."
Detroit's Big Three automakers are showing off a number of new EVs at the car show. The U.S. Congress and Biden, a self-described "car guy," have pledged tens of billions of dollars in loans, manufacturing and consumer tax credits and grants to speed the transition away from internal combustion vehicles to cleaner EVs.
Still, gasoline-powered vehicles were well-represented at the exhibition, with Biden taking a few of the automobiles for a spin. “Jump in, I’ll give you a ride to Washington,” Biden joked with reporters as he slowly drove inside the carpeted convention hall. “It’s an Uber.”

How about some regulation requiring the charging station to actually maintained and functional. It isn't necessarily more charging stations that's needed but that you can find functional charging stations when you need them. As to the pandering to the union workers. America was built before the unions at the expense of the workers and unions were created to protect those workers and claim some of the economic benefit for them.

So just in terms of CO2, how "green" are these cars Mr.Bomber Biden? Well I did some calculations, comparing my 1996 Ford Fiesta with one of these things and over the next 10 years the Tesla is 20 TIMES WORSE!!! I will explain:- I have taken into account the build, the replacement battery in 7 years, tyres which wear out faster and the fossil fuels required to charge it up. My Ford, will need a few spare parts each year, one set of tyres and does around 50 mpg (5.5l/100km) covering say 10,000 miles (16,000km)/year. Looking at depreciation, the Testa will be a write off as the cost of new batteries will outweigh it's value and in 10 years my Ford will be 36 years old. Now I could look at a newer car and the results would be similar, but 20 TIMES WORSE is a big number for something we are told is "green" and which I have to subsidise and the owner has to suffer range anxiety, or buy a second car. That is the reality folks...you are being had!!!!

Wrong on so many levels. First of all, if it was true that the battery needs to be changed after 7 years, why does Tesla give 8 years of warranty? Tyres wear of faster. but there are less parts/fluids in a BEV so overall you will be changing less parts. You know that in the US you have more renewable energy than one from fossil fuels in the grid, right? It wouldnt even matter tho, the BEV outperforms the ICE even on a grid that is 100% powered by coal, just because you can charge the energy directly and have a way more efficient engine. As with an ICE you need to drill the oil, transport it, process it, transport it to the gas station, pump it and then burn it in your car at like 15% efficiency (before you say 35%, that is the maximum you will never achieve on the daily road where you actually accelerate, decelerate and dont have you engine running under preem conditions). We have Teslas that are older than 10 years by now and even with their early adopter technology that is far worse than in 2024 they are no write off. Comparing your old Ford makes no sense. Of course the most eco friendly thing is to have a car running as long as possible, but sooner or later you will need a new one. New cars are build anyways and for them the BEV will always be more eco friendly over its lifetime. You even say it yourself that comparing the running emisions of your car will always be way worse compared to a new car where you consider the emisions for building it as well, so why use that "20 times worse"? Subsidies are bad, at that point I acutually agree with you. I like how its always the people who dont drive a BEV that have range anxiety but never the ones who do drive one. So no, that is not "the reality", the reality is that a BEV in its current state is not for everyone and certainly cant replace an ICE car in every usecase, but it does have advatages that only grow over time. Baning ICE is not a good thing in my opinion, but its definitly not as bad as some people make it. Like you can easily drive your ICE until 2055, so why act like they will be gone tomorrow.

He never made it, he was so worried about the range he turned around and went back home. Here in Thailand, during holidays everyone travels at the same time, so getting from say, Khon Kaen to Bangkok a trip that normally takes 5-6 hours, takes 8-10 hours. At new year many people with Ev's were taking 3 days, sleeping in their cars. If everyone changed to Ev's you would quadruple the number of power stations and with renewables maxed out they would all be fossil fueled. Correction, many drivers would be dead from range anxiety... and what if you lived in a flat or house without a garage, or with street parking in an inner city? The copper in the umbilical cord is valuable. All this is irrelevant anyway, correlation doesn't mean causation...and there is no correlation between CO2 and Climate change. It was thought up by an greasy politician and told to you by a a 13 year old child. Climate change is a natural occurrence, much of it due to the Milankovic cycles. So how are your dirty EV going to change that? The whole thing is stupid and will soon disappear and good ridence.
