Absolutely agree, it’s not a good platform for “duty” where it’s constantly exposed to elements or rolling around on the ground in a holster. Luckily the majority of gun owners, myself included, don’t do “duty” and the guns live either in the safe or under the shirt pointed at a pair o nuts where the elements/environment don’t matter. If I were LE/MIL I certainly wouldn’t carry one, but it’s a fine home defense and carry platform. And before anyone accuses me of simping I don’t own one and I carry an M&P lol

We are reaching levels of based not thought possible! At some point in the next few years people are going to realize that 2011's aren't the best duty guns or even self defense gun for that matter. Doesn't mean they aren't great shooting for fun and competition, but as a duty gun it simply doesn't check all the boxes.

@@Jordan-nc3zy I think it also depends on context. Like here with what Matt was saying, dust was a massive factor in his experience for duty use of the MEU-SOC 1911, which makes sense. When considering EDC or Duty use where the environment doesn't play a big role, I would argue it's not as much of a factor.

2011s shouldn’t be used for police duty either, especially when considering that many officers neglect their guns - leaving them in the holster for days, weeks, or even months at a time while they collect dust, snack debris, and moisture. Glocks tend to run just fine on Cheeto dust and dried rain... 2011s, not so much. I’m not saying this is how police officers should treat their guns, but unfortunately, it’s the reality.

If you are an uber competitor shooting USPSA Lim Optics or whatever it may make sense to you to have a 2011. They certainly can optimize your skill. But they are not made for duty; even if they change their name and say so. If you want to be good at shooting you're better off buying a dryfire book.

Even just training hard with a 2011 has been a struggle. The guys love making fun of me for it and it's really starting to get old. My 2011 has seen a lot of mud and every time it happens the gun starts getting real picky until i run it through the ultrasonic cleaner. Thats not acceptable even for flat range training, let alone taking it out into patrol bases or even hunting camps. At this point i dont want to strap it on unless the ground is frozen. It sucks because these guns are a joy to shoot and i really love the craftsmanship that goes into them, a doublestack 1911 was my dream gun growing up, but the reality is that if you have environmental hazards to contend with that arent snow(mine at least seems to handle snow and ice just fine), it's pretty hard to justify for duty use.

With 10’s of thousands of rounds thru a variety of pistol platforms , in a SHTF scenario, I’d grab a quality striker over a SA or DA/SA . All guns fail or malfunction eventually for a million different reasons so there's no guarantee but I’ve had less overall issues with high end duty strikers than other platforms.

I went from a 1911 to an M9 to a Glock 22 to 9mm P320’s then G19’s. Glocks are the most reliable in my opinion. The shooter has to put in the work to master the Glock Platform. More expensive guns seem to shoot themselves but are finicky.

I completely agree that 1911/2011 style guns aren't going to be great in a dust bowl. Just by design, they are generally very tight slide to frame fitment, so that kind of invasive sand filled environment is no bueno. I ran into that with my wilson edc x9 at an outdoor public range in basically a sand dune during a wind storm. We had to keep them slide locked open on the bench when not shooting, so you'd put it down for a few minutes and it was like you dunked it in a bucket of sand. It didn't like to cycle after a while once it got sand in places you didn't know existed. Other than that, like general security or police type usage, I don't really see an issue, but can't deny that anything else with a sloppy slide to frame fit really isn't going to care much if some sand gets in there

Well, I'm not a police officer in Iraq so I think I'll be fine with my Staccato in the Mid-Atlantic.. It's well known that 1911/2011's need up keep and more maintenance than your average wonder 9. That being said I honestly would not carry a 1911/2011 into any combat zone. Glock's and even Sig P320's are great guns that can be used in a lot of different applications I'll never argue that. I can't modify a P320 or Glock even just a little bit for duty carry and I hate the stock grip module on the p320, and the grip angle and trigger on the Glock. Straight from the box Staccato fits my needs as far as trigger, grip angle, and I like the weight for recoil management. I don't need to modify the platform at all. If you're shooting a shit ton of rounds (and not expecting to have to clean or tune it) through the gun and or exposing the gun to very adverse conditions like sand/mud etc. then a 1911/2011 is probably not the gun for you. The most my duty gun is exposed to is some rain and some snow which is nothing it can't handle.

Resident old guy carried a 1911 in uniform for over 30 then later a 2011. I could not agree more with this vid. I’m a glock guy now it’s not perfect either but if I went back to work it would be a glock for me probably a model 45. Seated in a car on a gun belt for hours, attached to a vest etc. the shorter slide is a way more comfortable option. Running a decent red dot the slide length from 4 to 4.5 in the case of the 45/47 just to me makes no difference.

I have a bunch of striker fired guns they are great and very reliable. I would trust my life to them. Unfortunately they get boring. I got into 1911s last year, and it's extremely addicting. I love the looks and stlying. Love the way they feel in my hands. If I pull out a gun to dry fire and tinker with, most of the time, it's one of my 1911s. They look and feel like a man's gun. I rotate them in my carry. I have a government .45, commander 9mm, MR920 w/ 507c, glock 19, and a CZP10SC. I enjoy carrying the 1911s the most. Now, if shit kicks off in some kind of "Doomsday" scenario, im taking the glock 19 and as many mags as I can. Doesn't have to be all or nothing.

I don't think there is any doubt that a highly challenging environment would favor a glock or H&K. But to be fair, there are also RECON guys who loved their 1911s, my long-time instructor being one of them. He runs a glock now, and feels they are superior as a duty weapon, but also does not see the drama over the 1911. M4s can be finicky as well, and the M9 was finicky. The M18 is the opposite...you can't get it to stop going off.

Wouldn't be adopted by militaries, but I could definitely see widespread adoption for LE or SWAT, where you're not gonna be getting major dirt, grime, etc. Main issue right now being- they are just too expensive compared to every other platform. That makes it a non-starter for now.

Pretty interesting/telling anecdote is that some people the unit Matt retired out of, who were using 1911s around the same time he was, modified their open top holsters with flaps like the old school army canvas holsters. They'd deactivate the flap once the dust kicked up by their vehicles calmed down a little or before entering buildings. I've had pretty good luck with 1911s in some harsh environments but knowing how the average cop treats their gun and hearing these stories and watching these videos (and reading the comments lol) I can't help but ask: are you carrying the gun, or is the gun carrying you?

Delta practices hundreds of 100000's of rounds, and the tolerances of the gun needs to be mechanically reliable at all times, people get withdrawed or kicked out for missing. And then it needs to be reliable in a battlefield setting, while being precise enough for a hostage rescue 1 tap shot which is the bare least minimum standard expected. If your career and profession is on the line through your tools, and the worst environments against your equipment. why do people have such a diffcult time accepting that the 2011 model is simply a inherently a design from an age when guns didn't have the benefits of advancements or the benfit of being shot 10000s and 10,000s of times and being shared, put in the field in the worst conditions
