We played host to Marine Recon onboard the Belleau Wood (LHA-3) in the early 1990's. They were a very capable bunch, engaging targets at 850 feet with Colt carbines and pistols on our flight desk while we steamed along at about 18 knots on open ocean. Watched them do that and later rappel from Hueys onto the flight deck while the ship did rapid course corrections. Yes, I'd judge them to very capable men from everything I witnessed and I'd venture to say that they've become more so in the past decades.

The 1911 was a great gun but there are a few shortfalls that makes it hard to say yes.
