What's the difference between you buying a dead fish at a Super Market and buying ones alive to keep in your house. In both situations you own that fish and can do whatever the heck you want with it.

I'm not really against Glofish but I hate the Glofish aquarium kits. They'd be much happier living in setups more closely resembling their natural habitats. I currently have black skirt tetras in a planted South American themed tank. The white skirt tetra is simply a leucistic black skirt tetra and I have one of them. If I ever get a glo tetra I'll treat it like their non-GMO counterparts. Most of these tanks are also way too small for the species advertised for them. Especially the one at 1:01

I don't think they where out at the time of this video, but I would also like to say that the purple GloFish Tetras look AMAZING in a natural, planted tank. you may not get to "experience the glow", but you do get a beautiful, natural aquarium with purple shiny fish that really pop in a planted tank. I plan to put some in my next planted tank.

Sad that they sell these fish like a new iPhone. Not everyone can keep these fish and take proper care of them. They are schooling fish and the tanks they show are way too small for any fish. Glofish are living breathing creatures not a show off decoration and need at least a school of 6,heater, and at LEAST a 10 gallon tank. This is sad.

Glofish is the best thing that ever happened to the aquarium trade in the last 100 years. They need to genetically modify every pet fish, it would be brilliant to see a blue, purple, green, pink, yellow in every fish in aquarium or pond trade. Imagine a blue goldfish or koi.

As the koi and goldfish have been genetically modified from their original carp I think us aquarist would prefer the natural look of the goldfish and koi. Even though a blue goldfish would be interesting I don't think many people would like it when we have bettas and other fish that come in blue.

I am new at fish keeping and just started 20 gal of planted tank. I have 7 red danios glofish in my tank that I didnt know then that they were genetically modified. I thought they were nice and cool when I saw them in fish market and I just bought them right out. Feel sorry for them when I found out sometimes later.We messed up their millions of years of evolutionary traits that help them survive in the wild. In a perfect world no one would ever buy these poor fish. But I did and now I am fully responsible to provide them with the best possible care.

Quite the opposite, in fact; they were originally bred by adding a naturally derived fluorescence gene to the fish, for the purpose of helping scientists to detect environmental pollutants in water. They may not be able to survive in the wild, but they aren't meant to. Their brilliant color is there so we can better understand our effect on the environment and keep it a safe and healthy place for the fish that already live there, and by buying these fish, your money goes to support and continue the research that helped create them :3

+LyreLiar yes I know that they were originally bred to help us detect pollutants in our rivers or water bodies. We get benefit from that but what is it for the fish? not to mention if one gets bored of keeping them or finds that they're too aggressive for community tank (they are in fact playful fish that often time scare other fish, shrimps or other tank inhabitants) and decides to release them into the wild? they won't survive with those fancy colors working against them.

The glofish get a injection when they are an egg, so it doesn't hurt them throughout their life. They are normal zebra danios, just with a certain injection running though them to help them glow.

Most of the care seemed good, but pls don’t use painted gravel unless you know what paint was used. And please use bright different colored real plants. The plastic ones are often too sharp and can hurt the fish. It’s also not as enriching for them.

I saw some glowing zebra danios yesterday at Pets Mart but they do not glow much or have much color except the orange variety. The others you can just sort of see by looking closely that there is this extra color in them. The tetras are much more obviously glowing.

My neon greenish yellow glofish is spinning, it did for a week straight then stopped for a week and started again 2 weeks ago and it it still spinning. We've had glofish for over a year and around 10 have died but 4 of them were yellow. I wonder if how you breed them just kills the yellow fish or something. I really dont want it to die. We got it like 8 months ago and it's my favorite, we got it and it was small now its still small but its the 2nd smallest in the tank. I just loved it since my mom bought it and i dont want it to die. Whenever i feed it, it gets so excited but it struggles so much to get the food but the other fish save a lot for it. When it swims it spins and it dosent look like spinning it looks more like teleporting. what i mean is it like animating more of showing one frame then another then another instead of a smooth animation. Like a slideshow showing a picture then another and another its scaring me i dont want this fish to die i want it to die happy and old naturally. not be in pain for a month before death. Please help me.

Nope. The fish genes are spliced so they produce GPF. They fluoresce under one wavelength of UV light, and emit under another, depending how they have modified the gene that produces GFP. One mutation produces a pinkish red, another a kind of yellow. The most common, is green. I've done similar in class with E. coli, never a vertebrate.

Pretty please, I'm a single Mom of 2 teens & really like these myself... my fav. color is green. basically letting it run with no fish in it for a week or 2 to let the beneficial bacteria build up and the water to balance out and adding fish slowly(by slowly I mean adding 3 fish max every week).the beneficial bacteria are extremely important cause they help turn the toxins the fish produce into relatively harmless nitrate.without the cycle the fish will poison them selfs to death and ph will never balance out right so you'd either have a lot of deaths or a really cloudy water from algae and bacteria blooms.

This is a very hard one to fathom, when you see why they made these fish in the first place (to detect toxin and pollution)by Humans, and also for Estrogen detection, in order for humans to be aware of dangerous waters,Is that a good thing???? Then they were changed (Colour) for the Aquarium hobby, we again have to ask, havent humans ALWAYS done that? mixed dogs for new dogs, cats guppies??? For me, its how these animals are treated in their life time thats more important to me. If millions are bred, and no1 buys them, then what does the future have in store for these pretty coloured fish??????? These fish are born with those colors but it doesn't mean that it is ok to support this terrible "abuse". These fish are selectively bred and the genetics are so narrow that they are incredibly weak. It's like what happened to the German Shepherd Dog with the inbred hip dysplasia issues.
