While true disco music was evolving in the early 1970s, it has been argued that this is the first "real" disco song; however, an earlier hit--Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes' "The Love I Lost" (which was released in the fall of 1973)--is most definitely a disco song. Nonetheless, Miss Gaynor's iteration of "Never Can Say Goodbye" will always be one of my favorites from the early disco era.

The very first true Disco tune - drum/bass patterns/ the tempo, arrangement - all the classic elements of Disco are here for the first time. She's indeed lip-syncing here, but so what? There's another version/post on youtube where she's actually singing live over the pre-recorded instrumental track - and she does it perfectly in tune - w/o the aid of in-ear monitors, auto-tune, etc..
