Remember the scene where Bernadine and Gloria were at the carnival, and Bernadine says I'm not strong like you." I need someone to hold me? That shows you that Bernadine looks up to Gloria and see's her as strong and confident but when we the viewer take a look at Gloria and how her story plays out, Gloria needs to be held and loved as well, she is just more reserved and holds herself to a standard around her friends but when she's alone, you can see that she definitely feels alone, has hang-ups like the rest of em. She just hides it better and puts her feelings aside to be there for everyone else. I believe she was still in love with David both mentally and physically, and it was hard for her to come to terms when he came out to her. She refused to believe it because she mentally and physically gave herself to this man and treasured the relationship even after he left. She had this empty sense of hope that he would come around even though he clearly moved on. I was so happy when she found love again. She gives so much of herself to others. Her son, her friends, and her ex. It was good to see her catch a win.

This is back in 1995 where gay was still in the closest kinda idk know the history of the gay community, however it's more excepting to be gay in 2023 then 1995. I didn't know or see a gay person really til I was in high school in 10th grade at 15. So from yrs 1-15 gay life or gay stuff was not accessible, it wasn't so in your face like now lol. Thank you for these character breakdowns! I absolutely LOVE Gloria! She was so loving and nurturing. I love how feminine and soft spoken she was. She was that dependable friend that everyone needs. Edit: I feel like the reason why Gloria wants to be intimate with her ex is because he's familiar and comfortable emough to be with him. She clearly isn't comfortable with her weight so being vulnerable with a new man is probably anxiety inducing. She doesn't want to be intimate with just anybody and also wasn't really trying to date anyone because of like most single mothers she prioritized herself last.

Gloria was one of those women who devoted her entire life to raising her son. Tariq was like her emotional husband. That's why she had a hard time letting him go. Tariq was all she knew. She didn't date at all. When Tariq's father would come to visit, she jumped at the opportunity to sleep with him because she was lonely and craved intimacy with a man. Gloria wasn't the type of woman to have a random hookup or sleep around like her friends. David was her son's father and someone familiar. I don't think she wanted to be with him. She had needs. Her life was running her business and her son. She never made time for a man. In regards to her ex David, he was always gay. A Bisexual man is still very much attracted to women, so how the hell could he not respond the last time he came to visit. How you go from being attracted to a woman and having a whole child to not being able to perform sexually with a woman? His you-know-what just stop working when he is in the presence of a woman. Like did he closed his eyes and pretended that Gloria was a man when they conceived Tariq? He was just scared to come out and chose to suppressed his true self and desires, and live life on the DL like many men. He told her that he have lied long enough about who he was. At that point, he was tired. Gloria knew what she was doing when she went across the street to talk to Marvin. She got all dressed up and put on her good church heels 🤣 but can we talk about Gloria being referred to as a big woman when she wasn't even that big? Loretta Devine wasn't big even back then. She had a nice shape.
@jama3997 Жыл бұрын
It was the 90s. I saw something on lipstick alley about people just calling us gen z’ers fat bc a lot of us are built like Loretta Devine was back then and we don’t consider it big. People acted like women her size were potential “my 600 lb life” participants or something. What we know as big breasts or big butts today, completely outdo what was considered a big butt or breasts back in the day. What we consider a small waist, or a flat stomach today, was called fat and pudgy bskc then. I’m built like Countess Vaughn was. Short, wide hips, big thighs, big breasts, normal sized butt, etc. and I was getting called fat in the early 00’s just like she did. She’s not even big and never was.

Society doesn't really give young black boys the grace of being kids.. black girls too but it juss shows up different.. A lot of the times because of how society is conditioned black boys are always seen as men.. Like for instance when they cry. People often tell them to man up.. i think that comes from slavery.. Black ppl werent seen as Human . So their Youth was not a factor.. they were treated like adult mules regardless.. ripped from the parents.. & worked to the bone. Beat to the bone & shown no mercy or consideration thats due to any living being.. let alone a child.. so many black ppl don't have a keen concept of childhood.. i feel like thats also why Tariq dresses like a More Mature Male.. thats Gloria having influenced him with thee dynamic and allat.. amongst Society.. plus her being a stylist.. she prolly liked to dress him up like a lil man when he was a child.. she prolly even called him her 'little man' 😄😂.. And thats whats interesting too.. alot of Black Men are both Coddled & Rushed to Grow Up simultaneously.. and its like. They are more mature in certain ways when they are younger. And then get Older.. get a taste of independence/freedom.. and Act out through Adulthood.. Reminds me of this Book called Manchild in the Promise Land

When it comes to their resolutions, I felt it has more to do with the other women learning to stand on their own and take care of themselves, and Gloria learning to lean on someone and be cared for. She needed to find peace in her vulnerability.

My oldest son was born I 1994 and had a gay grandparent who had been in a relationship with another man outwardly since the 70s. What impressed me was how his father, the super macho man, always spoke of his father with extreme love and respect and as a matter of factly. He was a good many years older than me and I really expected some homophobic caveman business in regards to his father. I have to say, for that time, it was impressive. I had 3 out cousins my entire life so I was always ready to be defensive towards straight black males about homosexuality back then. It was a pleasant surprise to meet a man who just acted normal about it but he said growing up was hard but he'd never forsake his father or Stanley for anyone. ❤️

The difference in maturity of kids and young adults from 30 years ago until now is clear. I've had a baby in the 90s, 2000s and 2010s and boy is it different! I wouldn't allow my middle kid to go away to school because he's so ill- equipped for life regardless of me trying to teach him survival skills his entire life. Lol. Unlike Gloria, I don't want to hold on to them for company but I want to make sure that when they do go they'll be safe, secure and successful and ONLY have to come back to live in a dyer emergency whereas my parents and my generations 1st set of kids were looked at as more capable. This dynamic between Gloria and her son seemed weird back then.

I always felt that David's ultimatum was from a place of hurt and immaturity. But it was always his responsibility to maintain his relationship with his child. And both of them wanted cheese on the sandwich.
@kamauruddock96847 ай бұрын
The dad was kind of a deadbeat dad from before so him setting an ultimatum is wild. As to why Tyreek doesn't want to see him...the dad failed to build and prioritise a relation with his son so the seed of resentment grew in tyreek.

My inference is that it's late at night. And John wasn't home with his new woman.. So he probably also hadn't been answering any of her calls.. So she was probably up worried about him. So when she got a call from a foreign number. She answers, ''John?''.. cuz she's hoping it's him, with Answers on where he's been and such. Cuz You can deflee be pretty certain that John would cheat on the White Woman too.

@@HeitCheri bc think about it. He said he wanted to see Tyreek and if he doesn't want to see him, he's "checking out." Maybe it was not only a play on words for his hotel but that it WILL be his last time seeing him. And he DID look kinda frail in the movie. He didn't look "healthy" himSELF. Idk... He just looked kinda worried about something. Why would a man act like that towards the woman of his child? He didn't even wanna really hug her. This movie came out during a time when HIV/AIDS was still looked at as a death sentence. People didn't even wanna hug someone who had it.

Marvin isn’t doing anything yet. Gloria isn’t about the fast lane she and Marvin are an old fashioned romance. Take note of what Savanah said when she was modeling what men used to be… Gloria has an opinion but it is all focused on the new news she got from her ex. She may have had a few one nighters but she not swatting down dudes like Robin. She gave that understanding look bc she knows what these ladies are searching for bc at one point she did have it with Tyriq’s dad. Until things went left and he left. She feels she may have this with Marvin, that slow burn the ladies all want to have.she won’t dive in like the others bc she isn’t really that desperate she just wants love but not just any love the right kind of love. She only went back to Tyriq’s dad is bc at one time it was perfect

“Daddy” seems more informal thus connoting closeness. “Father” just sounds like a slight to me - like a sperm donor. Father seems more tied to biology whereas “Dad” or “Daddy” seems more like a doting term than the formality of “Father”.

I think there was no cheese on the sammich and Marvin wanted cheese. He tried to give it to Tarik who also likes cheese but there is no cheese on it. They are similar I think they had done it a few times...They were hanging out like a couple. Very affectionate, The son is used to seeing him around, they hang out together like father and son. I'm think the indicators were there. I think Gloria does not tell anyone about her sex life because she's embarrassed. She's got self esteem issues and doesn't think they will want to hear about her uneventful sex life. They just don't know about her encounters with David or her new relationship with Marvin I feel like his "Why are you telling me this" was like "If you want my advice and I give it, why are you challenging every bit of advice I'm giving??" He was telling her as a man, he understands what Tarik needs in order grow into a man. I think that ending couch scene where they kissed was the kind of sex you have after an argument or time apart. Not that it was the first time. I feel like she exhaled prematurely when she first met him. The couch scene was the real exhale...a long awaited and deserved, fulfilling DEEP exhale. The other ladies would exhale for the WRONG situations. This was the right reason to exhale. A good man who actually loves her and shows it after all her self depreciating talk and negative opinion of herself all tied to her appearance. The Handyman!

Oh nicely put 💯🤗. I also get the feeling that he was trying to ask Gloria, being in each other’s company for weeks or a couple of months: where do we stand now that WE have formed a bond, being flirtatious to a certain extent, seeing each other every day and sharing food (which I think is a very important way of bonding eg having a meal as a family whether it’s a form the form of breakfast or a holiday event). He wants to take it to the next level and she has to give the green light 😊. That’s how I perceived the question

@1:00:00 you mentioned poor editing... I think that was the issue with the condom in the Robin video. Another youtuber pointed out Gloria's earring that kept disappearing and reappearing in the scene with the ex-husband. It could be just bad editing so that Michael threw away the wrapper twice. 🤷🏾♀️ I can't believe he would take it all the eay off without her knowing.

Cheri, you’re right about the bonds being broken between estranged parents and children. You just don’t know them and they don’t know you. All you have is whatever little reference was left before the separation. Sometimes that can cause issues as well because some parents aren’t humble about their absence and some children aren’t ready to forgive their parent… the family you do have on that estranged parents side really doesn’t mean anything because there’s no history or loyalty there. They feel like strangers. You’re not included in any family group memories and it’s kinda like a club you’re not a member of. This happened with me and my father after 20 years. All of a sudden a man I thought I would never see again was in my Facebook inbox, long story. But it’s bitter sweet because even though now I know who he is, if the trauma and damage within a person isn’t healed, reuniting or forcing a relationship may do more harm than good. My cousins and even siblings aren’t connected. I don’t blame Gloria’s son for saying F that ish. Sometimes forcing it will create another empty hole that needs fixing. It’s really sad, but it happens all the time.

I’ve seen a lot of Gloria’s. Overweight and a lil insecure and attached herself to a downlow gay man who uses her as a beard until he is brave enough to walk out of his insecurities and into his truth. He likes men. PERIOD. She liked his attention, but she saw the signs. He probably even told her about his choices and she was in denial….especially when she got pregnant. She probably thought being intimate with him would make him strait. Once he got comfortable being gay, he got into a serious relationship with a man and started living out loud. No need to force himself to smell fish anymore. But I trtuly believe Gloria knew before he told her. I believe Terry McMilllan knew too. She only got mad when her fruity boo wanted to leave her after using her to get to the states, meet a man and set up a business……at her expense. Ain’t no better downlow detector than a black woman.

20:17 as an adult who recently had to put my foot down with a relative who felt entitled to a relationship with me without doing the foundational work of building one, tariq makes perfect sense to me. sure, you may have wanted that person around but you realize that that person can't show up and be present for you in the way that you would need. i'm sure tariq would've loved to have his father around, but when you grow up, you realize you can't change people and the people you want to be loved by may not be able to give you the love that you deserve. instead of creating an ultimatum (which I agree with Cheri, it is an ultimatum), david should've spoken to tariq directly. ask him why he doesn't want to be around you, self-reflect, and change your behavior accordingly. i wouldn't be surprised if david's journey with his sexuality and his wife created a lot of distance and resentment in tariq. 1:03:55 y'all ain't used *69 so it blocked your number from showing up on caller id or was i just a stalker 90s kid? lmao

I think Gloria’s neediness stems from at the time folks downing overweight people. That was me at this time, giving myself to anyone that gave me attention.
