I have a theory, bare with me. I know this might sound crazy, but I think when the father died the curse was lifted off of Mozelle. She said at the end that she had a dream that she was drowning, And she could feel herself leaving her body or something like that, And she says she heard her brother's voice said just let go ( something like that). What if In order for a person not to be affected by the curse, there needs to be sacrifices involved. What if Mozelle's husbands were sacrifices to protect her brother's life. What if there was a karma effect between the two? Mozelle's Karma has been catching up to her for years, while her brother was able to get away for cheating for a good while without any real repercussions. His death would be a sacrifice to rebalance everything so Mozelle can have and keep love. My Perspective ❤❤

😮 I love this take!! I can actually see this being a reason. Now I’m going to rewatch it with that thought in mind, because I bet we can find something that relays this. Mozelle constantly says “My Brother and I are of 1” and language and word choice plays a part in the movie with their language switching and relaying Shakespeare lines. @agirlnamedkris6374 Thank you 😊. I also think Eve accidentally ended the curse. Maybe in order for the curse to be broken it required a sacrifice (Mozelle's brother). Also it would clear up the prophecy the wife gotten at the market. She said : You're in pain, and as an end to your problem but not one you imagine. Stay quite, sometimes a solders fall on its own sword, LOOK TO YOUR CHILDREN". Which means her husband was the source of her unhappiness because of his cheating. It was his cheating that ended his life; she said look to your children. I believe it was a prediction of Eve's involvement with her fathers death. "In three years time you will be happy again" meaning three years after his passing, you will be happy again, that could mean she could meet another man or something else. The fortune teller showing up at the funeral, I fell is a indicator that she is the one who placed the curse on them. Just theories.

Tbh in Louis eyes that was his baby girl, to everybody else she was viewed as a daddy's girl which there's nothing wrong with that. Because of her impairment in perception, It was only through Cisely eyes that that was her man. She didn't know her place that's why her mom had to put hands on her. One thing I will say When it comes to a man in his family having time is important because as you can see, they all want his attention, and they are all competing for it and sometimes this cause issues between the women in the house because they either turn on each, turn on the man or someone looks for that affection somewhere else. In this situation the mother stuck beside her man and both daughters turned on the father Cisely Lied on Louis and Eve sought to have him killed.

If Louis would have just keep quite and left with Eve to head back home and let Mr and Mrs. Monroe go on their way, he would not have been shot by Mr. Monroe. Louis was responsible for his own death. Also, Eve did not need Elzora's help. Eve dropped seeds while talking to Mr. Monroe at the open market. He Adventually saw the truth for himself. ‼️Also everyone's forgetting about the original Eve! Why would they tell us about that original couple if it had nothing to do with the story?! The original story of Eve and how she was given land by that guy and had 16 of his kids. It was implied he wasn't married to her and she was the other woman. It never said she was so thankful she married him and had 16 of his kids. It said she was so thankful that's probably why she had 16 kids with him. And then Eve says we are all descendants of them. I think this whole family started out of infidelity and this whole family is cursed to die by it. To never find true love. It will always end tragically. Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy. ✨Controversial Perspective: This story reveals multiple storylines from varying perspectives NARRATED by an unreliable child perspective combined with everyone refusing to acknowledge any truths. When Louis came home and Cecily warned him about the mom, wife/sister being mad, they likely were aware of her “hints at womanhood”, the overzealous attempts to “please” Louis. His approach to everything is questionable and manipulative to someone at all times. 1)He has no respect for patients and knows he does the bare minimum. He sells dreams with no shame (see the pack around the lady’s neck was provided by Mozell , insinuating that she believes that by wearing it, it works) 2) no loyalty to his friends 3) no respect for his wife -he doesn’t bother trying to hide his infidelity. 4) his arrogance- he talks smack unnecessarily 5)he sees tension building between Cecily & his wife but loves to ignore it… he even encourages it at times 6) his lack of boundaries. No self respecting physician is dumb or blind enough to not see the inappropriate sexual nature of Cecily. He likes it because he expects all women to be “accommodating “ and it’s an unspoken thing that is understood by everyone. His inappropriate nature is disregarded due to his patriarchal position, his occupation , his ability to provide, and position within their society, and the lack of options women believed to have at that time. This still occurs to this day but families often keep these things very hushed to avoid uncomfortable situations. No man appreciates when the ladies disturb the peace . What if Cecily had been somewhat groomed? This was kind of standard when teaching young ladies how to operate even if we like to pretend that our ancestors didn’t partake in such practices. The grooming was subtle but created an environment where her actions while inappropriate, were never scolded until mom peeped game. What if he did tamper with her after the slap? He was drinking and already admitted to not meaning to hurt her. How far did he go before HE FELT LIKE HE SHOULD STOP? Can we trust either of their stories??? When Eve begins to taunt her, I immediately felt it was not a period. She never mentioned pms symptoms and seemed fine until that interaction. Eve found evidence of something and assumed it was a period. The mom never put much effort into caring to know. Louis was a lil too confident and almost disassociated considering everything that occurred . I felt like he knew it wasn’t a period due to his memory of the actions. When Eve starts yelling to tell, Cecily takes her rage out on her bc she was trying to heal and she was very triggered. I also noticed the discomfort more apparent when he entered the room and she told him to go away. Even if it was only a kiss, Louis should have established boundaries long before. She was entirely too old and too comfortable sitting in men’s laps. Her mom may have had an inkling of the truth all along but back then we had to be demure and submissive. When she tried to intervene, Cecily was determined to demonstrate her womanhood. Overall I love how it makes us all think. We could watch it together and see it completely differently. Idk if he did it but also… based on his interactions elsewhere, whatever she said he did, he did. It didn’t feel sincere when they told her she could go but they wanted her to stay. What I heard was “ You’re pregnant by your father and this is hard for all of us. I love you but I’m weak. I don’t want to let your father “FIX” you ( get rid of it) due to the risks, so go off and have it secretly & you can return. All will be well again Dear!” Louis was like “Dang … I think I might’ve done a lil too much. Take a vacation babycakes. You deserve it. We good right?” They actually both had the nerve to dismiss alllll those signs for that length of time and found it easier to just send her off. Then her eagerness to go combined with the finger over the lip at Eve was almost making me believe that I should just go along with what she said too!😂

Thanks for your detailed comment. There's so much to unpack here! Because there are so many of the occurrences are cloaked in ambiguity, we all are left to speculate on what actually happened. The only thing I'll say for now is that, from my view, the speculations ought to be in line with the likely facts that we do know. Also, I don't think that Eve is an unreliable narrator simply because she is a child... Especially considering that adult Eve is telling the story, having had years to process all that happened through the lens of adult eyes. Eve was probably the most reliable storyteller in the film. The question of whether we can fully believe Cisely or Louis is completely valid and compelling. When the director speaks about the film, this was her point. She wanted Uncle Tomey to be the holder of the truth of what happened, while at the same time leaving it as a mystery for the audience since he couldn't speak. Again, thanks for your comments! ❤️

Wow this was a well written and detailed synopsis and interpretation of this classic movie. Watched this film numerous times as a kid and that scene always gets to me. I agree with a lot of your commentary especially of Louise's character and the events that happened with Cecily. He's the perfect example of someone that abuses their power and role whether it be in society, in his profession, in the community he serves and especially as a husband and father. He utulizes his power and influence in a manipulative manner and because of his lack of regard for everyone he essentially chose his own demise by the decisions he made. Everyone else seemed to be affected by his decisions. Well said!

I remember watching a video about the evolution of Black witches from the 30s to nowadays. This was one of the featured films, and the wording was “Elzora gave her a fatal voodoo spell to kill her father”. Before I watched this movie, I assumed the bag given to the broke woman would be a foreshadowing and the spell would kill the woman’s niece in retaliation. Had my original interpretation been correct, Eve would’ve had a real working kill spell to use and abuse as she saw fit (and ngl that sounds pretty neat and useful). After the way Mozelle threatened to kill Eve, I would’ve included her in the request as well. Had I been in Eve’s shoes, I would’ve got rid of her before she could conjure harm against me, family or not idgaf. God knows Elzora probably would’ve cast that one free of charge. Fantastic video! I wish more commentators would discuss and theorize about it.

Moreover , like how the Sicily was envious of her mother because of her idea of how he loved her So that’s the whole curse right there.. like the prophecy that oedipus would marry his mother and kill his father (unknowingly) But then again correlation does not equal causation So many things can be true Can’t wait to hear your thoughts

Notice 1. Moselle and Louis don't look anything alike.... different dads???? And 2... Granny is alone!!! She clearly outlived her man and she isn't even all that old!!! 3. Cicely was an unreliable narrator, and a gaslighter. She clearly had some kind of weird personality disorder with all that she was doing. The matching her mom's hairdo and all that, parenting the siblings, etc. She was full on Hand that rocks the cradling the situation.

Question, when Eve asked Zora where was her daddy and zora said he should be dead by now since she made a coffin, she mentions how he’s where all those other Batiste men are, when eve visited the grave where all her uncles (mo’s ex husbands) were, is that where Lewis will reside???😮 based on the evidence and clues in the movie then you guys’ theory sounds 100% right
@HeitCheri Жыл бұрын
Good question! I'll have to take a look back at that scene, but the question is whether the husbands were buried in the family plot where the Batiste men were buried. It could be two cemeteries or the same one. I'm not sure without going back to check.

I do believe there was inappropriate behavior between the two . Cecily was wife number two to their father . She was the wife that still believed in him that he can't do no wrong . Where as their mother being the wife and enduring the cheating for years she is jaded no longer believes the hype. Honestly the way she acted when she got her" period"( or broke her virginity), some people don't bleed directly, especially if the hymen weren't fully broken, it could rupture later on. Look she purposefully cut her hair from her childlike ponytale to a curl like her mother's style to show she is no longer a child she is grown. I believe they did things until her period came because now she could get pregnant so now those things they did before had to stop

The main differences between the channels is the type of film each channel covers. This channel covers movies like Waiting to Exhale and Why Did I Get Married. The other channel (Axiom Amnesia) covers more hardcore hood films like Menace II Society and Boyz N The Hood. The new channel (Axiom Amnesia 2.0) covers more mainstream films.

I think Eve putting that letter in the swamp was an indicator that she did, in fact, see the truth. So, instead of giving Mozelle the letter and abzolving her father of the accusations from Mozelle, she allows her to continue to believe that he did do it. That was the biggest clue for me.

The people saying that the father did something to cicely must have forgotten the earlier scene. Remember, despite eve seeing what actually happened, somehow cicely was able to convince her that the father was not cheating. Imagine what she cold have told eve, considering she wasn’t there the night of the storm. Obviously cicely was suffering from the Oedipus complex. As long as she had these strange feelings for her dad, she was ready and willing to take up for him no matter what. That night when he hit her, she felt betrayed,and hated him because she realized he wasn’t seeing their relationship in the twisted way she saw it. Y’all want this man to be a weirdo so bad. The father can’t necessarily change cicely’s perception, but he can damn sure lay the boundaries, which he did when he struck her.

I don't think Mozelle told Julian the full truth. It seems like NOBODY EVER told the full truth in this movie. And I really disliked Cicely as a character. Her attitude and mental state throughout was extremely troubling. And I also think while Louis wasn't a bad father intentionally, He definitely showed favoritism toward his eldest daughter so much so that it showed and negatively impacted both daughters. It gave Cicely an unhealthy sense of importance over her sister AND her mother, and gave Eve insecurities and animosity toward her elder sister. I think Julian would still have married her if she told him the whole truth. Her curse probably includes the men being unable to resist her. Even if they knew being with her would kill them eventually, one way or the other. I agree that if a man gets out of the web before she falls in love with him, he's free. But if she still loves him, He gon die. She gonna make it happen especially if he were to leave her. It's like being marked

‼️If the father was innocent WHY DID HE WRITE A LETTER TO MOZELLE TO BEGIN WITH??! They live in the same house. All he had to do was let her hold his hands and see he was telling the truth. But he didn't do that, because he wasn't telling the truth. That's why he is only answering the accusations in a letter. Also it seems a lot like he's trickle truthing in the letter.
@HeitCheri10 ай бұрын
People often write letters to ensure that they communicate effectively. Also consider that writing a letter wouldn't be strange in the middle of the 20th Century. Finally, they absolutely did not live in the same household. Mozelle had her own house.

Not all of Mozelle's "lovers" met an untimely end...no one said buddy who killed Maynard died! Even Elzora affirmed that any man who MARRIES her will die...so if she & Julian just live out their lives in sin without getting married, it sounds like they'd be able to live a long, happy life together 😉

based off this careful analysis of the film it's looking more like the generational curse placed on Moiselle and handed down to the women in the family could also mean that Lewis being married to his wife, which makes her Moiselle's sister in law is why Lewis met his demise. I think this could be another possibility because it seems the curse takes affect when there's a marriage. WOW all I know is the more I think of it, the writing in this film was truly well done.

I've seen Eve's bayou a couple of times. But watching this video put things in a different perspective. And I have to say Eve in fact did participate in the death of her father. This movie's perspective is from and through The eyes of a young girl a child. And like you said in this video when they were in the bar you needed to pay attention to the background noise. There are things that take place in the film that are just part of the background that you don't think are related to the overall story but the fact they are. Certain comments made about the major players that tell you something's about to go down. It starts early on in the film specifically the party that the Baptist family are throwing pay attention to the look on Lenny's face when Lewis is dancing with his wife Matty the look says something's about to go down. Every scene in the film that involves Lenny pay attention to the look on his face that is the look of a man that knows and has realized that he married a w****. A man that has been cheated on by the same woman on dozens of occasions. Also pay attention to the relationship of Lewis and Lenny Lewis and Lenny are boys they go back play wave caps and you know that Lenny has confided in Lewis about his issues with his wife Matty. So you know Lewis has inside information about their relationship he knows about all the times he has caught his wife Matty laying up with some dude he knows about all the times that Lenny has caught Matty getting ran through. Lewis has literally been a shoulder for Lenny to cry on. So when you get to the final quarter of the film and Eve goes to visit Lenny and says what she says she in fact dined out her own father as the latest guy running through his wife. When he showed up that night with the intention to kill Lewis and Matty what changed his mind at that moment was the fact that Eve was there if she hadn't been there he would have guns them both down. When Lenny speaks in the bar you can hear a man who wants to scream laugh and cry all at the same time.

I had never noticed it before. I 100 percent agree generational curse, and Cicely was in love with the dad and Cicelys blaxk widow curse did it. Notice the grandmother doesn't have a husband either!!!! But I don't think Zora cursed her, I think she just knows about it. It doesn't take a psychic to know she was a black widow. The granny probably went through a few husband's too. Louis and Mozelle look like they got different daddies fa sho 😂😂

When I watched this movie for the 1st time ions ago, I hated it. I still do. It looked as if they were trying to convinced the audience that Cisely was fast out of the blue. But that the family was filled with secrets. I think Cisely was groomed. Maybe not by her father but by 1 of his friends. That's why her father had a look of shock when she kissed him.
@HeitCheri Жыл бұрын
Thanks so for your comment. What is the evidence from the film that Cisely was groomed by one of her father's friends? When would they have access to her? The only people she was consistently around was her family. Not sure how often they had parties, but there doesn't seem to be any evidence of her spending time with anyone else. I understand why people say that the father did something. However, when you look at the whole film, that's what the audience was supposed to believe UNTIL the twist at the end when the audience hears what happens from Louis's letter to Mozelle. My belief is that there needs to be solid evidence of whatever I'm claiming happened.
@courtneymeredith19195 ай бұрын
My perspective: I would say julian would probably still be cursed in a way because think about how mozelle really was trying to give hosea an out with her because she was choosing to stay w her husband but he had fallen in love with her mozelle and was not going to let her stay with her husband, he wanted her for himself. He did kill maynard but he also doomed himself in that he lost his life/freedom in taking the life of another. So I would say that when mozelle falls in love w men in general they all loose their life just by becoming involved w her in a way.

I think this is a story of broken women anchored by a narcissistic, self-centered man. That is perhaps why the son is not involved in the storyline. The girls are pitted against each other, fighting for the attention of the dad. He reinforces this dynamic by showing one more attention than the other and isolating Eve whenever he is confronted by her. In fact, he may ignore Eve a lot because she is an independent thinker and is outspoken, whereas Cicely is a pleaser and caters to his need for validation. Mom is checked out and passive. *Narcissistic men gravitate to this type. Grand mere knows her son is wrong, but is also passive and never confronts him. Mozelle has undoubtedly had her own run-ins with a narcissist (probably her dad) because she hops from man to man seeking her own love and validation. The voodoo/mystic perspective just adds another element to this dysfunctional dynamic. The theme of curses is explored with this element, but the real curse is generational trauma passed on by unhealed individuals.
@mikki374010 ай бұрын
This is such a great breakdown of this amazing movie. I agree that Aunt Mozelle likely did not tell Julian, and honestly I think she didn't due to being a Baptiste and, like her brother, being selfish and willing to hurt others to get their desires met. I agree the whole family is cursed, and I think it is because of their history, getting in bed (literally and figuratively) with the white oppressors, amassing privledge and screwing over other slave-descended Black people (people like Elzora and her family) and were cursed. I suspect their ancestors have done a lot of Black people dirty on their way up, and even the descendants have inherited different toxic personality issues that come out in different ways.
