❤ Met her in 1980 when she was signing her Auto-Biography at Macy's in San Francisco. She was wonderful and very approachable, we talked for about 5 minutes, a wonderful experience, very memorable.

Hey, I met her at the same time! She was publicizing her book, co-written with, I think, William Duffy, called "Sugar Blues." She was 88 at the time and I was about 24. You're right, she was totally enjoyable to speak with.

@@quapawqwerty1619 - in fact her auto-biography was called Swanson on Swanson, it came out January 1980. I got the book signed by her, lent it to someone to read and never got the book back again unfortunately. I was 22 years old, she talked to me and seemed very interested in what I had to say which I found curious, asking me what I was studying and what I wanted to do with my life after College. She was incredibly sweet, I have fond memories of spending 5 minutes with her before things got busy, a line started forming of people wanting their books signed.

I loved Miss Swanson in “Sunset Boulevard” and always enjoyed her later appearances on many TV talk shows. Always so personable, glamorous and elegant! ❤

Sunset Blvd, one of the first classic films I ever saw, which made me a fan of those films. ❤️

The Velvet Hand and the Iron Glove. I like that metaphor. Christ said that? Primetime network TV folks. Very interesting discussion.

Ed Sullivan looked so young! This is interesting because they're just making small-talk that is somewhat choreographed. It's really like a talk-show interview, but they're standing, not sitting at a desk ,because this was a variety show and the "host sits behind a desk and guest sits on a chair next to it" format we take for granted wasn't really a thing yet. In radio, they would probably be standing during a bit like this, so that's what they do here too.

The quote “put your iron hand in a velvet glove” is attributed to Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte.

She had some kind of come back in the late 70's because I saw her here in NYC coming out of Lord&Taylor, and she had all the fanfare of people waiting to see her come down the steps. Funny thing was, she was all made up and waving to the crowd, I was close enough to see that the two men on each side of her carried her down the steps, her feet never touched the ground !! Several decades later, I wish I had some guys on each side of me now to carry down the subway steps since legs and knees bother me now !!
