Gloria Victis is a crowd funded indie MMORPG that has as of February 2023 fully released, which is more than can be said about 99% of crowd funded indie MMOs we’ve seen over the past decade.
I’ve covered this Gloria Victis numerous times over the years as It’s always seemed like quite an ambitious game for a small dev team so props to them for actually getting it over the finish line.
When it comes to the actual gameplay Gloria Victis uses a simple directional combat system similar to mount and blade, mordhau, chivalry and so on, you create your own character in a massive sandbox open world medieval landscape then go out, gather resources, craft gear and earn coin to ultimately participate in the games Tri Faction PVP siege wars where each faction fights for territorial control.
Other cool things you can do in this game include building up towns with your faction or guild, player shops, horse taming, gathering, crafting, operating siege weaponry and roleplaying.
To me though the games biggest unique selling point is that it’s the only realistic medieval persistent open world MMORPG, so if you’re the type of person that likes this theme and want to live an alternate life as a medieval knight then there isn’t too many other options than this.
What do you think about Gloria Victis in 2023? Do you think this game is a good indie sandbox medieval mmorpg or is it too niche for you? let me know in the comments below!

Gloria Victis 2023 MMORPG Steam Description
ABOUT THIS GAME
Gloria Victis - A medieval MMORPG where Mount & Blade meets Planetside 2! Explore a breathtaking and atmospheric open world designed by lovers of the Witcher and Gothic series. Be part of a living society and become a soldier, knight, archer, assassin, swordmaster, berserker, huntsman, blacksmith, builder, merchant, farmer, healer, and more... the choice is yours!
FEATURES:
Non-Target Combat & Epic PVP
Engage in action-based, non-target combat where your skills and tactics matter! Show your warrior spirit and earn fame as an undefeatable duelist, eagle-eyed archer, or respected commander inspiring your allies in battle. Compete for territory in the open world, and fight to the death in tournaments, castle sieges, and epic wars where entire armies collide!
Challenging Territory Control
Conquer land, siege non-instanced towns and castles and build advantageous fortifications in the everlasting conflict of the realms. Fight for glory in one of three nations or claim a castle for your guild and rule your lands!
Innovative Partial Loot System
Be brave when waging wars and battling over castles, but beware when venturing into the lion’s den. In the centre of the mainland, the risk and rewards become much higher. In certain places on the map, you’ll be able to loot defeated enemies and take your reward by selecting which specific items you will loot - but hurry, the clock is ticking! Are you good enough to succeed there? Or would you rather choose less risky ways to gain your wealth? It's all up to you!
Player-driven Economy
Look for the best resources and materials out in the world, and capture resource nodes. Use workstations to craft high-quality items, and cooperate with others to increase your efficiency and achieve mastery in one of 8 different realistic crafts. Plant your own seeds, tend your crops, and keep them safe from pillaging enemies! The economy is in your hands - swords don’t drop from wolves, they are forged by blacksmiths!
Class-less Progression
Become who you want to be! Build your character without artificial classes, and fully customize your equipment using hundreds of available items!
Living Open World
Seamless, breathtaking, challenging, dynamically reacting to your actions - the massive and diversified world of Gloria Victis awaits you!

yeah i don't think people watch LazyPeon for actual logical MMO takes, but to get alerted to private servers/new MMOs coming out/just released like Gloria Victis and the memes. doesn't actually stick wiith any MMO long enough to learn combat or experience the actual game. For example Return of Reckoning the Warhammer Online private server, props to Peon for giving it population boosts on both videos but one of the Cons was the combat. playing starting zones in any MMO is usually the worst experience

It’s funny. My new player experience seems a little different. The NPCs would get triggered from 10m away and I was almost constantly fighting in the camps. I never got to run up to an npc for free hits. I’ve also got no problems with the quest line, I thought it set me up to expect the fighting system, then taught me the gathering and crafting mechanics for the player run economy. Never heard of Gloria victis till it released.

In the world of Glori Victis, swords clash and steel sings, Battles rage, and kingdoms fall, as warriors earn their wings. The game is filled with endless quests, and foes to vanquish too, And in the midst of all the chaos, The Lazy Peon snoozes through. For though the game is full of thrills, and danger at every turn, The Lazy Peon has found a way, to sleep through all the churn. But for a man who dreamed to write, and weave words into art, This game is more than just a sleep aid, it's a world that sets his heart. The Lazy Peon may doze and snore, as the battles rage onscreen, But in his dreams, he's crafting tales, of glory and of queen. And though he never realized, his dream to be a poet grand, In Glori Victis, he finds a way, to make his heart expand. So here's to the game that makes him sleep, and to The Lazy Peon too, For in the midst of all the fun, he finds a way to be true. To the dreams that he once held so dear, and the words he longed to write, Glori Victis is his muse, and it sets his soul alight.

Just wanted to mention, when you joined the siege event and said the flag was on fire, but you didn’t see anyone, that was you attacking the location, you joined Sangmar, which color is black and gold, the flag you were looking at was blue which meant it was controlled by Ismir. The PVP is the best part of the game, I agree the starter quests are all pretty bland. Once you get used to how the pvp works, what times are most active, and have a group to play with it can be fun.

I do appreciate any attempt at a sandbox experience greatly and I believe that is a good enough hook for people like me who only wants to feel that experience again. @@O3.Studios This was my experience though. I found a mentor early on that taught me the basics, told me the intricacies of the combat like chambering, parrying, reposting, movement etc; power leveled me with skill books, invited me to a guild and in my first day I helped defend our guild owned castle in a huge 50v50+ siege. Later on I was given tasks I could do to make the guild stronger like gather stone to upkeep our walls or manage our guild farm to provide mats for consumables for the guild etc. I really love social and player driven games where every consumable and piece of gear was created by a player. After our first fight one of the guild members looted a legendary chest piece off a dead player (there's limited full loot in GvG sieges) and gave it to me. Later on I was attacked by an enemy guild player in our farm and I took a legendary dagger off him. These items have stories attached which I find compelling. I did eventually quit the game though about a week later because there is a MASSIVE imbalance in the player base. I choose the lowest pop faction (the blue guys I think) and there's less than 100 total players. The guild I was invited to was basically the entire faction. Every time I went out in the world we were outnumbered 5 to 1. I couldn't do anything alone and ultimately the game revolved around raid logging until the next weekend castle defense which feels very boring. You can look at the map and see the red faction has the most players and owns 70% of the map.

The sound of clashing metal, Echoes through the field, As armies clash together, And glory becomes their yield. With each leap and each strike, They fight with all their might, For victory and for honor, And for a place in the light. Bit harsh, maybe even rude, but maybe that is what the devs of this game need to hear. Game reminds me a bit of Life is Feudal. I think the game could potentially be fun but as its an indie team they probably just need to condense the game down so they can focus their energy to improve the quality of the game. For example just make it like Conquerors Blade where you have a short intro to all the mechanics and then pretty much no real PvE world and put the focus on the PvP completely and improve the animations, the combat system, make it smoother.

Despite the garbage fighting mechanics I actually enjoy the game. It really opens up when you're part of a guild and have organized attacks/defends on castles. If a game like war of roses or mordhau kept its functionality but became an MMO I would easily switch but like you said there isn't anything else like this besides Mortal Online 2... It is unfortunate hearing that a lot of the jank the game has was around since the last times you've reviewed it. Doesn't give me any hope that it'll fix any of them, but it feels a void for the time being (even if I'm just fishing/farming 95% of time).

I played this game for a few days, and I have some thoughts. I played mount & blade a lot, so the combat was very familiar. I played the Persistent World mod and this game is a lot like that. There are some glaring issues: 1. The "cleave" mechanic is completely game-breaking in PVP. It completely ruins PVP battles when you are outnumbered, because you cannot maneuver to limit the amount of enemies that can hit you by making them line up... basically everyone just takes two-handed weapons and spam side swings through each other, and you cannot fight multiple people at a time if they are literally hitting through each other. In mount & blade you can kill multiple enemy players at once if you are good because attacks bounce off of teammates, so they cannot spam attacks at you. The cleave mechanic completely destroys any sense of teamwork or skill, I think hitting multiple enemies is fine, but attacks NEED to bounce off of teammates for this to be fixed. I usually have been using a spear, and my attacks with that bounce off of teammates, its extremely unbalanced that two-handers get to just completely ignore a game mechanic like that. 2. The blocking area of the shield goes WAY too far to the sides. For that matter, blocking in general has crazy horizontal area, even with weapons. Dozens and dozens of times, I will stab people from like a 90 degree angle or more, past their shield, and it will end up blocking the attack. The shield should block all attacks from the front, but the area it blocks in is just insane. Especially considering that "backstab" is an important mechanic, I shouldn't be getting my attacks blocked while I am pretty much behind someone, I should be rewarded for attacking them from behind. 3. Hitboxes are weird/kick being OP. I found often that the range of weapons almost doesn't matter... certain attacks will be OBVIOUSLY outside of your range, but you will get hit anyway. Even if the blade of the weapon clearly did not hit you. This is especially annoying if you are purposely using a long weapon, and then you are getting outranged by one-handed swords while your thrusts are somehow out of range. I am not sure if it is a netcode issue or something, but there is some sort of hitbox issue/desync that goes on in PVP. Also, when I use a shield, people will try to kick me, naturally. However, because you can attack and kick at the same time, often you will be blocking their attack with your shield and be powerless to avoid the kick. At least in mount and blade, the kick animation was relatively short range (you had to be like on top of people to do it) and the area of effect was low. In this game, the kick has a range completely unrelated to the kick animation itself, and the direction that they kick almost does not matter. If people kick at you and completely miss, you will often be stunned anyway. There seems to be a very wide area of effect on the kick, and the hitbox on it is just ridiculous, because of this, people kick extremely often, and the only downside for them is stamina loss. This makes using a shield deeply unfun, because if you are blocking multiple enemies you cannot also avoid kicks because they are done while moving with big area of effect... you are just dead. The mechanic that punishes block holding is already the shield health... so putting an OP kick in the game that can be used while running full speed is beyond me. This is another combat decision that completely ruins pvp group fighting... why would you want to be in a shield wall if you will be stunned repeatedly? 4. Shield bash sucks. Its the "stun yourself" button. It can be blocked very easily, so if you ever use it in PVP, you will be rewarded for your stamina cost by stunning yourself. Brilliant design. So if kick stuns the person who blocks, shield bash stuns YOU if they block. And especially with how the area of blocks is insanely high, you can be basically behind people and stun yourself with shield bash. I really cannot see a situation where you would use this in PVP. You can chamber with the shield bash, so maybe that is the only use for it. If you weren't stunned when shield bashing it might be OK, I don't see how it would be bad if they just made it so if its blocked, its blocked, end of story. But the self-stun is just way too punishing. 5. Bows are pretty useless. In mount & blade, bows do a decent amount of damage, not as much damage as melee weapons usually, but enough damage that you cannot just run in the open with two handed weapons. Bows in this game have extremely limited range and almost no damage. They also don't have much ammo unless you spec into their abilities. I think it is fine to have crappy bows in a game based on melee combat, but the bows are just annoying in this game. The arrows can go through your shield half the time, and you can get headshot while holding your shield in front of your head. So basically, shields, which usually are meant to block arrows in other games, are extremely weak to bow players because the area that your shield blocks arrows is so exceedingly small. While the shield has a massive hitbox in melee to block, it has an extremely small one against bows, which just feels a bit weird. And since arrows cancel your melee attacks if you are hit, it makes bow players just an anti-fun nuisance rather than a meaningful part of the combat. 6. Cheaters. I have run into people that seem to block every attack, from any direction, instantaneously, even against multiple enemies, and even if you are behind them. These people in the PVP arena will be like 50 kills and 0 deaths and have more kills than the other teams and their own team combined. I don't necessarily want to say people are cheating because its possible people are just very good, but I have seen some very suspect block-timing that makes me think there are people with auto-blocking scripts, similarly to when I used to hear people had things like that in Mount & Blade. Especially because the attack directions have a little animation telling you the direction, it seems likely that some sort of blocking cheat wouldn't be so hard to create. A quick search on the internet and I have already seen a few "cheats" and "hacks" popping up, but I haven't investigated further. 7. The meta. The meta for PVP is just terrible from what I have experienced. All the mechanics I mentioned all push the meta towards just using two-handed axes or halberds and spamming cleaving attacks. There is no shield formations or formations at all like in Mount & Blade. Because you can cleave through teammates, you just all stand in a line and spam cleaving attacks. That is the combat. Its extremely un-interactive and silly. It makes any tactics almost completely meaningless. You pretty much will just win an engagement if you have more two handed axes spamming than the enemy does. Conclusion: While the game is generally cool and I actually enjoyed the leveling part... the combat basically is a super unbalanced version of Mount & Blade's combat, and not nearly as good as Mount & Blade. It rewards ooga-booga two-handed spam and disincentivizes shields/ teamplay/ tactics. This is not to say I didn't have fun at all in PVP, I was still killing more enemy players than the average person, despite not following the meta, and some of the sieges were interesting. Smaller PVP battles where the enemies cannot sit on top of eachother and cleave spam are also fun sometimes. But even so, the big hitbox of blocks on the side kind of ruin any out-flanking maneuvers. And I didn't even mention the clunky movement and clunky horses... not sure how that hasn't been smoothed out in the years this thing was developed. I think the game has potential, but there needs to be more to do in the end-game than waiting for PVP battles to happen. I am not sure what PVE there is in the late game, but either way as a newer player the game does a terrible job of telling you what content there is to do, so I am just not sure. They need to look long and hard at the meta they have brought about with the terrible balancing, the fact that two handed cleaving weapons just get to ignore the mechanics of the game will mean they will always be the strongest option. Also I agree with the point that the "tutorial" does not actually teach you anything... like the crafting is still kind of a mystery to me because it was never explained, and the crafting tutorial quest wants me to turn in crafting materials for a quest reward... If I am learning how to craft, how does basically deleting all the stuff I craft by turning it in help me learn crafting? I need those materials to craft other stuff? The game is only like 10 dollars right now or something, so I would say it is worth trying out, but they seriously need to fix the obvious issues with the game.

Having given this game 50 hours, I agree with all of your points. However, PVP and the dungeons are legitimately fun. But yeah, the questing sucks. The crafting and resource gathering takes too long to do anything. But the PVP is a blast ... if you can find it going on. That's really the big issue, most nights it was hard to find the large scale battles.

He done everything wrong right from the moment he chose his nation. In SEA (least populated region in GV) the nations are mostly (not exclusively) stacked into red vs blue. Yellow has in the past been powerful but all their vets left after the lootzone got shrunk. So while he ran around empty castles we were on the other side of the map conducting hours of around 100-200 vs 100-200 battles. It was the moment players of this region had been waiting for for years. Battles (such as tonight's RR battle) stil see well over 50v50 battles

I genuinely enjoy Lazy Peon reviews but for this one, can't seem to agree with the boring starter experience. Sure, it's a bit classic and old school but all the more reason to love it. It makes the sense of gameplay highly intuitive. I just started but am looking forward to digging into this one, it seems to have a lot of potential.

As a PvE Carebear, I enjoyed the crafting, questing and visuals. In a great Guild, I also enjoyed some aspects of PvP and Raids. Like you, I hated the combat. I don't understand tying the movement of my weapon to the movement of my feet like that. It felt very counterintuitive. I was constantly trying different hotkey setups. I would end up circling my targets and swinging like a spaz. And then there's gear-gating but enemies can loot some of your stuff... Yeah, "endgame" became very frustrating for an old slow-twitcher.

This game is definitely fun, but you have to know what you are getting into. Most of the hour to hour content is skilling, killing npcs, and harassing static nodes, occasionally doing battlegrounds. Big fights revolve around castles which happen at regular periods. My experience of the game was something like: chill medieval vibe while hanging out in discord with your clan shooting the breeze and skilling or leveling, prepping high level gear, etc. The big combat fights are actually pretty tense as positioning, morale, and individual skill play an important role. It was also my experience that most people leaned in to the roleplay at least a little bit. This game is very similar to EVE online in pace. That being said, if you are looking for constant action or high fidelity graphics, this game isnt for you.

Why are the attacks so slow? In Bannerlord the attacks are so much faster. The movement speed seems similar, wouldn't this create problems like, enemies running away out of your range bacause of the slow attack speed? Also the shields don't actually block attacks? 9:37
