CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Colonel Shaw (Matthew Broderick) confronts the Quartermaster (Richard Riehle) about withholding shoes for his troops.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Glory is a celebration of a little-known act of mass courage during the Civil War. Simply put, the heroes involved have been ignored by history due to racism. Those heroes were the all-black members of the 54th Regiment of the Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, headed by Col. Robert Gould Shaw (Matthew Broderick), the son of an influential abolitionist (played by an uncredited Jane Alexander). Despite the fact that the Civil War is ostensibly being fought on their behalf, the black soldiers are denied virtually every privilege and amenity that is matter of course for their white counterparts; as in armies past and future, they are given the most menial and demeaning of tasks. Still, none of the soldiers quit the regiment when given the chance. The unofficial leaders of the group are gravedigger John Rawlins (Morgan Freeman) and fugitive slave Trip (Denzel Washington), respectively representing the brains and heart of the organization. The 54th acquit themselves valiantly at Fort Wagner, SC, charging a fortification manned by some 1,000 Confederates. Glory was based on Lincoln Kirstein's Lay This Laurel and Peter Burchard's One Gallant Rush; the latter book was founded on the letters of Col. Robert Gould Shaw, the real-life character played by Matthew Broderick. The film won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for co-star Denzel Washington, and additional statuettes for Best Cinematography (Freddie Francis) and Sound Recording.

@Raul Castro Sickening! During my 28 year career in the US Army we were nearly always well supplied! In 1984 the tropical BDU was not available, so we were issued "new" never worn olive green "Jungle Fatigues" not camo. As well as three pairs of Jungle Boots each. During pre-deployment in 2005, a Supply Sergeant had a "snit" when I Demanded Desert Boots that fit Properly, instead of boots that were "my size" on paper. It was past 1700 hours on a Friday, the rest of my Platoon were waiting on the bus, or on the way back to the barracks. I told him, in a couple weeks he'd be issuing boots to another Brigade, but I would be on Foot Patrol in the "Sunni Triangle" I got proper boots. 15 months later I had worn most of the tread off of all three pairs of boots!

Something that often gets overlooked is Shaw doesn't hand out the boots. He effectively hides himself. This is important, because he realize he shouldn't get the adulation of the men. He failed them, and it was Rawlins that spoke up. This isn't to say Shaw is horrible, but he recognizes that he just did what he should have done, and in standing back, this shows he understands this. In fact, it shows him going to see and reflect on the results of this mistake. This is character growth, and I love it.

This is one of the best movies ever made. A true classic. Long live the 54th! When Colonel Shaw was killed, the Confederates buried him unceremoniously with his fellow soldiers. Shaw's father, upon hearing about this and asked whether they should dig him up and move him to a more proper resting place, said that he felt his son could not have received a higher honor than to be laid to rest along with the rest of his troops. Also, Colonel Shaw was one of the youngest Colonel's ever -- losing his life at the young age of 25.

Shaw was not the youngest to be commissioned Colonel, there were several other boy colonels on both sides who were commissioned younger. In the US Army, Galusha Pennypacker and Ulrich Dahlgren(son of famous Civil War US Navy Admiral John Dahlgren, and was one of the most brave and daring of the US Army's cavalry officers) were the two youngest, commissioned at age 19 and 21, respectively. The Confederate Army's youngest colonel was Henry Burgwyn was killed at Gettysburg, shot twice through the chest while leading his 26th North Carolina Infantry regiment forward. He was one of 13 men and officers killed after picking up his regiment's colors. By the time his men had rallied round their colors, their boy colonel had already been slain. Like valiant Dahlgren, Burgwyn died at the young age of 21. Two brilliant and fearless young officers cut down while bravely led their troops, gone far too soon.

This was a poignant scene because right before this, Broderick's character had Washington's character flogged for going AWOL. Later he found out that Washington's character had left in search of proper shoes because his feet were badly hurt. In fact many of the soldiers in the Col. command were suffering. So he took action to get boots for his soldier partly because it was his duty as a commanding officer and part because he felt guilty about having Washington's character flogged.

He shouldn't feel guilty for flogging Washington (and I doubt he was feeling guilty). No matter what's going on, if you're a private you can't go AWOL. You work within your chain of command to address your problem. If your chain of command isn't good, well, that's why it's dumb to join the military in the first place. But, he did, so he should have sucked it up and done it right. Washington's character deserved the punishment for going AWOL. And, in fact, they thought he was deserting, so Shaw took it easy on Washington. In the Civil War, the punishment for desertion was death. Soldiers cannot go in and out of camp whenever they feel like it, no matter their reasons.
@woodrobin
@woodrobin 2 жыл бұрын
@@angusmcculloch6653 If the Army has no loyalty to the soldier, the soldier owes no loyalty to the Army. If the chain of command is broken (as it was in the case of the quartermaster defying the orders of a colonel and refusing to issue shoes and socks to black soldiers), then it is impossible to follow, and it is a fool's errand to try. Following the chain of command requires a functioning chain of command. An army must give loyalty to a soldier, and make that soldier part of a body that has a common cause, to earn the loyalty that will cause that soldier to lay down his life for his brother, and to risk his life for the objectives the Army tells him must be achieved. It is not, and must never be, a one-way street, where all is given by the soldier, and nothing is given to the soldier in return.

What I love most about Matthew Brodericks rendition of Col. Shawl is the passion and endearment in his eyes. He is wise as a serpent but meek as a lamb. No one took the black regiment seriously. But he did at the sacrifice of ridicule from his superiors and discord with his other comrade. He had compassion and bravery. Never letting his status override his purpose. I love how his fellow comrade by Cary Elwes stood by his side despite their differences. A story of friendship, love, bravery, and defying unspeakable odds amid persecution. Though they loss, they truly won. They are the ones who permeated history.

This is one of those movies where I hesitate to watch it because I find it so sad, once you know what's coming in a few scenes, not just the ending. But damn it, it is so well produced and acted. Broderick actually conveyed his fear and nervousness to me before the charge when he fumbled with his sword. That was a really good detail. He wasn't perfect or heroic, just trying not to let anyone down, and that's pretty much the sum of soldiering with people you respect.

It is said by those who knew the real Robert Gould Shaw, that he had soft girlish features and with his regiment his voice was soft yet firm, and he was a "mommas boy". The real Shaw was very soft spoken with pretty boy looks, so Matthew Broderick fit this role perfectly in that sense alone.
