Hi there! This is 1/4" Proofgrade walnut hardwood. We also have a 1/8" thickness which you may have received in your free Proofgrade pack with your Glowforge Pro. -Ellen

Is this a plain wood panel? Can any wood be used?

Hi there! This was actually printed out of Proofgrade wood. Proofgrade materials are specially formulated for your Glowforge, but you don't have to print on just Proofgrade wood. You can absolutely pick up wood from another vendor, you'll just want to make sure it is CO2 laser-compatible. I've heard of many Glowforge owners getting their wood from sources such as Home Depot or Lowe's for example. -Ellen

What program did you use, or was used to get the 3D gradients? or can we just use gradients to make the machine do the sloping? BC if so I'm all set for that.

Hi there! You can create your designs in grayscale using any design program to upload into your Glowforge printer. A quick search for "grayscale" should give you a ton of example images you can print and also information on how those designers may have created those. The team printed on Proofgrade Walnut Hardwood for this one, so you'd simply need to use those settings already pre-loaded into your Glowforge app. However, for 3D variable depth engravings you'll need a special kind of file. The length of time for your print can vary from a few seconds to several hours depending on the complexity of your print. This print was several hours with multiple passes on a Glowforge Basic. You can print up to 3x faster on your Glowforge Pro. -Ellen
