Great Video! Did you add anything to the plate - dish soap or some kind of "masking" ?
@TheAtlantaMaker4 жыл бұрын
No. No dish soap or masking. I've seen various different methods including even a wet paper towel, but figured I'd try nothing first and see how it turned out. I don't think it could have turned out any better so at least these Dollar Tree plates no masking or prep seems to work. I'm guessing it could be different for different types of glass though.

I did find some from Dollar General and tried to order more, but they could not do it, or were unwilling to. They did have glass plates there but with a rough square backing on them.. Do you think it would be safe to try engraving on this? Thanks for all you do for our community!

Hello from Atlanta! Have you ever tried engraving a glass mirror with the GF? Been wanting to try engraving a border from the back (and adding LED lighting posibly). Worried about burning off whatever makes up mirror coating, though ☣☠😬
@TheAtlantaMaker3 жыл бұрын
I haven't tried a glass mirror yet. But you would be able to burn a border from the front most likely which would look frosted (but possibly also reflect I guess). We do engrave the acrylic mirror stuff from both sides, so I know at least the acrylic stuff can be done from the back with no issues.

Love that little tool? Wouldn't auto focus do the same thing though?
@TheAtlantaMaker3 жыл бұрын
Autofocus may work, but I've had some issues with autofocus on some clear items, plus on some materials you'll want to defocus a little to get a cleaner engrave. Technically I defocused a bit by using a larger value than it was actually reading if I recall correctly.

Just found this site - great! Would GlowForge be able to engrave the iridized side of glass (such as Bullseye fusing glass)?

I'm not sure on the fusible glass at all. That might be a question best asked directly to Glowforge. They do a livestream at least once a month for people considering a GF and that might be a good place to ask that question.

I'm new to this. Did you HAVE to put it up on risers? Is putting it up on risers necessary to get your focus from the laser?
@TheAtlantaMaker3 жыл бұрын
Anything thicker than a 1/2” will need the crumb tray removed and some sort of risers to bring it into the focus range. If the entire thickness off the plate is less than 1/2 you can possibly do it without the risers.
@erikasynnestvedt98873 жыл бұрын
Hello _ First, thank you for the tutorial and the files for the tools. I just attempted an engrave on the same plate (dollar store) and it did not come out as "white" as yours did. It actually looks very transparent compared to yours. Could that be a focus height issue? I propped my plate up on scrap wood, measured and it was 1.375 from the plate. That's the distance I used in the settings and then used your power/speed settings. Thoughts?
@TheAtlantaMaker3 жыл бұрын
It has to be a half inch or less from the bottom of the print head. If you are saying it was 1.375 inches from the print head then that may be your problem. The focus height tool I used in the video will give you the object thickness to enter, and it ranges from 0 to .5 so you shouldn't be entering anything greater than .5
@songofml4 жыл бұрын
After you used your measuring tool and put the thickness in / used the spreadsheet recommendations - did you change anything on auto focus? Or did you just leave the 0.25 default setting?
@TheAtlantaMaker4 жыл бұрын
I did not use the autofocus at all as I wasn't sure how it would work with clear glass. Setting the thickness is essentially setting the focus manually. That tool is super handy for finding that thickness, and I highly recommend making one.
@siobhancarey63793 жыл бұрын
Did you do anything in the sides of the plate yet? If so did you have video? I can’t figure out the settings for it.
@TheAtlantaMaker3 жыл бұрын
I have not tried the sides of the plates yet. My guess is that the focus would be a bit of an issue, so a plate with a smaller curve to the sides might work better.

new glowforge user here- what is the use of the tool you used earlier? if my glass can work with the crumb tray still on do i need the tool?
@TheAtlantaMaker4 жыл бұрын
It's just to help find the correct focus height. Link to the tool is in the video description I believe. But if the total height of the item is less than 1/2 ", you can put the glass item into your glowforge without removing the tray and try and use the set focus command under the three dots in the Glowforge UI. The Glowforge will usually let you now if it's too close or too far away from the laser head during a set focus command. Keep in mind that you may want to check that the laser head doesn't "hit" your item while moving too. To do this you'll have your machine off and manually move the gantry over to the object to check clearance.
@mma62034 жыл бұрын
The Atlanta Maker awesome! thanks so much. another question: the glass I'm trying to engrave is around .094 inches thick- do you recommend using some sort of masking agent? i've heard of people using wet paper towels and painters tape
@TheAtlantaMaker4 жыл бұрын
I haven't used any masking on the plates I've done so far or the Glass Stone in my other video. I've also seen people mention using a very thin layer of liquid dish soap, but I haven't found it necessary, at least with these Dollar Tree plates. Different glass may require different settings or masking from what I've heard though, I just haven't encountered it yet myself.
