Hi, I make stained glass as well. Have you experimented at all with scoring glass via laser? If so, have you found any techniques/settings that work particularly well?
@dlmhc8 Жыл бұрын
@user-nn5xb3ly8h Yes! I have had the best luck with 100% power and speed set at 10 (on the xtool software). When done, use an exacto knife to clean out grooves/etching. I also have used "rub and buff" to make the etching "pop" in certain pieces...especially when etching in clear glass.

@MellowpineLasers11 ай бұрын
Thank you for your kind words. I always try to minimize fluff and get straight to the point. 😊 The black cardstock method works well for most of the projects, but I personally think paint produces slightly better results when it comes to engraving photos with intricate details. To engrave mirror, you can engrave the back of the mirror and remove the reflective coating.
@krisknowlton59352 жыл бұрын
I use tempra paint and like you said I spray it on. Something else I've tried that works well is candle black which is the soot from a candle. It is fast to put on and there is no drying time and washes off with water.

Thanks for the great video. I have and xTool D1 10w and I have improved my laser engraving and cutting thanks in part to your channel. Keep making videos! Project Idea if you would like to tackle it. I would love to see a video where you teach us to make custom finger joint boxes. For instance. A wall hangable 3 tier shelf system for holding flat stock like wood or actylic. Having the shelves slightly angled up would keep the material securely in place. There are box generators online, but knowing how to size the slots for your material and make matching tabs would be a great and practical project.

Just found your video and it gave me a good baseline on how to engrave glass. I found that the best way to get an even coat was to dilute the tempera paint with rubbing alcohol and use an airbrush to get an even fast drying coat. Then let it dry in from of a fan or use a heat gun in low to medium setting. But all in all great video.

Thanks for this! My technique for etching glass is to not use the laser at all... I use the same 3018 CNC, but with a drag knife attachment instead of the diode laser. I cut a mask into sticky vinyl, transfer to the glass and use Armour Etch to mark the glass. Armour Etch is a paste that you spread on glass, and it will etch it in a few minutes. One of the advantages of this technique is that you can etch curved surfaces without a rotary attachment - but of course the downsides are that it's more steps and requires a different tool. I will try your technique if I'm ever etching onto a flat surface!
@MellowpineLasers2 жыл бұрын
Try engraving with a laser, its easy and you can engrave complex designs. Which 3018 CNC are you using?

If you engrave the back side of a mirror and then light it from behind, wherever the reflective paint was removed by the laser, the light will shine through the glass and be visible as an illuminated image.

This was incredibly helpful!! I love how thorough you were in your testing and that you included the settings (you'd be surprised how many creators don't). Do you think matte black vinyl might work well, especially for curved surfaces where cardstock might gap and even painting might be difficult?
@MellowpineLasers Жыл бұрын
Glad you liked the video! Vinyl might be an easier option for curved surfaces, but it is not safe to laser cut or engrave vinyl (unless you use laser safe vinyl).

Nice video. My best result on a test piece was white spraypaint. From what I learned while exploring glass etching it's titanium oxide in the paint that reacts with the laser and "melting" into the glass causing the etch. There are probably other explanations to this as well, but as mentioned a white paint with TiO worked like a charm for me :)
