When my grandfather attended boarding school in his youth, he often went out to the forest nearby to pick glowing mushrooms for use during his late-night study sessions. When it was time for lights-out at 09:30PM, he would take out his freshly-picked mushrooms and use them for lighting to help him read his textbook.

I would think that you could put the luciferase/luciferin in the plant's water supply, and allow it to be drawn up into the plant by capillary action rather than by high pressure. We used to do that with pigments to make different colors of celery, etc. in elementary school. The other thing I was wondering is whether the plant could use the light efficiently for photosynthesis. Sounds like a perpetual motion machine, so it probably wouldn't work, but hey, just wondering.

You have to soak the plant under high pressure every time you want to read your book? Seems to me that a purely genetic approach is the way to go. Also, what if you want to turn the light off? This would not be useful for reading at home. It might be useful to light paths.
@mayakhodabakchian83886 жыл бұрын

Forget the paths.... your eyes are adaptable already, to your environnment providing you give them a minute, and nature provided you with this.. Not chemichally enginneered. screwed up system
@bnjyable6 жыл бұрын
Exactly, it is just enzymes that are being put into the plant. The enzymes and their bi-products will decay, so the plants will stop glowing. The time it takes can definitely depend for this, but often these don't last more than a couple days, and can be increased if the plant has an immune response to the foreign particles. With out genetically engineering the plant to continually produce these particles, you will have to continually inject them back into it.

About four years ago I saw a video similar for a crowd funded project called “glowing plant,” it even used the same chemical process to trigger the glowing, I invested over $100 and waited for four years just for them to ask for more money and then have it eventually keel over and die. They also tried to genetically modify moss to purify and scent air, haven’t heard much about that either. For anyone hoping you could have one of these on your windowsill in a month, don’t hold your breath.

I also did a research on this because in our class 12th Animal Kingdom we have learned a lot about Bioluminescent bacteria.light-producing bacteria that are predominantly present in sea water, marine sediments, the surface of decomposing fish and in the gut of marine animals. While not as common, bacterial bioluminescence is also found in terrestrial and freshwater bacteria.
