Just a couple of comments . I started taking glucosamine and chondroitin in the 80s as a preventative measure. I had a couple of friends that swore by the benefits. I had no issues and was skeptical (I still am). But I am 73 years old and never had a join pain or even discomfort. Being a retired research engineer, I still am not sure that the supplement should get the credit. But I won’t stop now! As an aside, my HOMA- IR is 1.2, insulin is 4, uric acid is always below 4. Maybe I am just lucky. I watch all of your content as well as Drs Johnson and Lustig. Thanks

I have medical evidence that for me, at least, glucosamine most definitely works. In my early thirties I started getting pins-and-needles in the fingers of my left hand. At first I didn't worry but after three weeks of non-stop pins-and-needles, I finally went to my doctor. Her diagnosis was that the cartilaginous disk between two of the vertebrae in my neck was wearing away. This meant that a major nerve running through my spine and down my arm was being rubbed a bit by bone. This was causing minor damage to the nerve, manifesting in the pins-and-needles in my fingers. She said that over time, as the disk continued to wear away the pins-and-needles sensation would increase and become painful and that when the pain got to a point where I could bear it no longer, I would have to go into hospital to have the two vertebrae in question fused together. Needless to say I was aghast and asked if there was any way to determine whether this was indeed happening. She said yes, and sent me for a CT scan of my neck. Sure enough, on a wear-scale of 1-3 with 1 being minor deterioration, 2 being medium and 3 being severe, my disk scored a 2. I appealed to my doctor for anything I could do to avoid this operation and she said that some people found glucosamine effective. She warned me that it didn't work for everyone but that if it was going to work at all it would be at least 8 weeks before I'd notice any difference. I immediately started taking glucosamine and almost 8 weeks to the day, my pins-and-needles stopped. I continued to take the glucosamine for a full year and during that time the problem never returned. However I was curious. I went to my doctor and asked whether there would be any evidence that my disk had been repaired. She thought it was worth checking and so sent me for another CT scan. This time the scan showed my disk as being completely normal, with no sign of any deterioration whatever. Thinking I was cured, I stopped taking the glucosamine. Two months later the pins-and-needles started again. I went back to taking it and have been doing so for the last 38 years. During that period there was one time when the pins-and-needles returned. It was after I'd started mixing the powder into my morning bowl of hot porridge. I did a Google search and discovered that the efficacy of glucosamine is destroyed by heat. I went back to mixing it with a cold drink and once again defeated the pins-and-needles. My daily dose was always small - about 1/4 of a teaspoon but last year (in which I was turning 69) the pins-and-needles returned. Assuming that my ageing body now required a larger dose, I upped the glucosamine to 1/2 a teaspoon per day. That did the trick, so I'm now on half a teaspoon of glucosamine a day. Recently I had the opportunity to try out a CGM and did so for 10 days. I've been a carnivore for that last two and a half years, so wasn't expecting my blood glucose to be high and it wasn't. However I was interested in seeing how it would respond when I took the glucosamine. These days I take it dissolved in the juice of half a lemon (yes I know lemon juice isn't carnivore but it's the only plant material apart from cups of tea, that I consume). I always take my glucosamine & lemon juice with a meaty meal and I was interested to see that it made no particular difference at all. My blood glucose rose slightly with all my meals but the meal with glucosamine made little to no difference. Here's something else of interest. I went through menopause in my early thirties and dexa scans back then showed I had osteopenia. I did a year of Fosamax and HRT which helped but I stopped them after that. However, in the subsequent years my bones continued to slowly improve. I'm now close to 70 and the dexa scans show that my bone density is in the normal range for my age group. I suspect all those years on glucosamine might have something to do with that. For me, glucosamine has been a marvellous, somewhat magical substance that has prevented years of pain and operations on my spine. (I'm also completely fine in all my other joints.)

Thanks for sharing with such detail! I had similar issues with my neck as well as fibromyalgia for decades. Carnivore healed my neck as well as my other chronic pain. Oxalates were a large part of the problem as I ate a lot of high oxalate nuts, spinach, black tea, whole wheat bread, and dark chocolate. I also drink lemon juice as it helps bind and clear the oxalates.

I have diabetes for more than 7 years. After 9 months of keto diet this year, my A1C is normal. TG/HDL is very low indicating less insulin resistance. During holiday I tried some unketo foods, my fasting glucose increased to very high levels. I have taken glucosamine for about 10 years. Based on this lecture, I think I need to try with different approach for my knee problems. Always appreciate doctor’s lectures and podcasts.

Thank you yet again for your attention and insights. Primary care physician in the Seattle area here. I’ve been intermittent fasting for 2 years now (eating two meals 2-8p, minimal snacking, emphasizing protein and fat, reducing simple carbs). Lost 32 pounds. But more importantly for this discussion, the arthralgia in my knees is completely gone. My guess is any autophagy happening during my fasting is “eating up” the junk in my knee joints. I tried increasing my protein intake by taking a bolus of 20g around 11a. Knee pain returned. Curious. And I no longer need to take glucosamine, which helped me in the past. Metabolic health for the win.

When I went off grains and veg, any pain in joints went away. So is it the fasting, of which I only do standard overnight (12 -14hr), or getting the anti nutrients out (tannins, oxalates, phytates etc)? It's an interesting thing.

My glucose level has been running in the prediabetic range in recent months. Age 82, and my doc tells me to keep on with low carb. I was going to start glucosamine, but decided against it after listening to this segment. I’m doing everything I can to restore cartilage and certainly don’t need anything that is going increase insulin resistance.

@deepost2604

@@happynjoyousnfree I buy a rotisserie chicken, strip the meat off, and boil the bones with Apple cider vinegar. This produces bone broth that is a gelatin. I favor this because I know it is loaded with collagen. Then I add the cooked chicken and various veggies to that broth to make soups. I drink a shake that has collagen and whey in it. D3+K is important to get the bones to absorb the collagen. I’m doing some resistance with weights…simple stuff like walking with dumbbells in my hands. I have a vibration plate and do 3 sessions per day for 10 minutes each at 30hz. Beyond that I do infrared sessions with a light panel that is supposed to penetrate to the level of the bones. Downside….Bone improvement is very SLOW. I’ve been doing all this for a year but my doc says another Dexa scan is not useful prior to the 2 year recommendations. The sense is WORKING BLIND…Even when I get another Dexa, they are notoriously unreliable. So, I continue to work at this figuring if I avoid fractures, it’s indicative of success….Age 82

For nearly a decade, I took substantial doses of glucosamine for my knee joints on my doctor's advice. However, pre-post imaging showed that I had lost cartilage in both knees during that time, gained weight, became hypertensive and diabetic, and the pain only worsened. By going low-carb keto carnivore 5 years ago, knee pain vanished.

After I went carnivore/ketovore, I quit my $20+ monthly habit and haven't needed it. The grains caused the inflammation that kept my joints inflammed.

Exactly the video I’ve been looking for over the past few months. I’m 48 and have had bad knees since my early 30s. They’ve always felt tight and squeaky (like old door hinges) and easily become painful when I get into certain positions-such as standing with my knees slightly bent, like when taking pictures for others. I started taking glucosamine and chondroitin, but after some years, I didn’t feel that the situation was improving at all. Still, I continued taking them. Fast forward to 2013, I decided to try OMAD (One Meal a Day) with clean keto. By day six, the tightness in my knees, which I had always felt, disappeared. While the pain hasn’t completely gone away, I can feel it improving. I now experience far fewer occurrences of knee pain, and when they do happen, the pain is less intense and recovers much faster. I strongly believe that glucosamine is only a placebo. However, like the video mentions, I should note that diabetes runs in my family (my dad and his mother). Despite this, I’m slim, skinny, and metabolically healthy. Currently, I’m following an OMAD keto-vore diet.

I did a lot of research about Glucosamine for joint pain, and finally bought some but... after watching your video, I realized those promoting this joint support, make no reference to insulin resistance (which i have from eating good healthy organic carbs ie fruits vegetables). Another bottle of something going in the trash again. I appreciate your expertise. I went carnivore 2 years ago, and keto 7 years ago, but after 60 years old, my body just won't support healing that well, even though I have healed all four bodies this lifetime and the last body, the physical body focus since 2017.

I guess any metabolic negative is also offset by the metabolic benefit of running.

I took glucosamine for at least 9 months. After 4 months of taking it i did a blood test, my cholesterol level was increased but yet was in the normal range but near to the borderline. At the sametime I noticed a slight weight gain which i thought was normal fir the winter season. But during the following 4 months the weight gain was very noticeable (about 5-6 kilos) so i decided to do another blood test, the result was not good, the cholesterol level went beyond the borderline, and even triglyceride level was worrying because i always had low triglyceride. So i stopped taking glucosamine which i can say that it helped me but not too much. Instead i started to take collagen type 2. In 1 week will be 4 months that I'm taking it, and i have to say that since last month I'm really feeling very well, almost no knee pain. In 1 one week i want to go for a blood test to see what's going on with my lipid panel levels.
