One tip! I have been glue basting for several years. I flatten my glue by just lightly dragging a foam brush over it before I pull over the fabric. That takes care of any issue of a spot showing through a light fabric. Your video is very well done!!

Agree, just tried this method which worked great for me but will brush over next time to ensure no dots of glue. When started before glue dots completely dried worked great, but over time dots of glue dried as hard dots which did not soften or wash out once quilt was finished. Thank you for this technique. Best basting approach for me.

Two months ago I had no desire, much less any idea how, to make a quilt. That’s when THIS video popped up in my KZbin feed. For some reason I clicked on it and watched the whole thing. From there I went to your straight line quilting tutorial. Next day, I went shopping. I have now made two small/medium quilts (plus one rag quilt). Both times I basted with the Elmer’s glue. After finishing my third quilt top, I thought I’d just TRY basting with pins since it seems like that’s how most people seem to do it. Well, I have now ripped out my two lines of quilting, pulled out all those pins, and just finished getting the whole sandwich basted with the Elmer’s school glue. This is the only way I’ll ever do it again. I have no idea why anyone would use pins. If I had tried that first, I probably would’ve never finished the first one, much less ever try quilting again. This method is genius. By the way, thanks to your videos inspiring me in the first place, I am now OBSESSED with quilting.

What a great demo - thank you so much. I will definitely be trying this. A little tip; I once saw a KZbin where the lady stuck two wooden skewers on the centre of the table so that she had the centre of top and bottom, and left and right. I find this very useful because I fold my fabric into quarters and then locate the centre by touch and then gently unfold the fabric. It makes it easier to manipulate when using a smaller table. I'm a new subscriber now; your delivery is lovely.

Nice tutorial! I have seen people paint brush the Elmers onto the layers for basting, yours seems a bit easier. I do use Elmers for gluing down the binding after it's stitched to the quilt and ready to flip it to the other side. I just put glue down, fold the binding onto it and iron it on to dry the glue fast. Makes it so nice to not have pins and no ripples when sewing. I look forward to seeing your quilting ideas.

I use this method also. However, I have found that after I have applied the glue leaving the swirls, my machine needle catches in the dried glue lines. I have tried the diluted glue in a spray bottle, but the sprayer gets clogged. So I dilute in a shallow bowl and apply with a brush and lay the fabric over and smooth out, leaving to dry. This works much better. (I agree, the spray is much faster but is more expensive.)

I've been quilting longer than I want to admit and I have never heard of this kind of basting. I love the idea and am definitely going to try it on my next quilt. I like your spiral quilting idea too. I did a spiral with one of my free motion foot attachments and it worked out fine, but it was a wall hanging so I was not dealing with a full size quilt. I really love your relaxed attitude about quilting. Back when I started we had the quilt police patrolling around trying to enforce a lot of quilt laws. I have gradually gotten away from traditional quilting and have done many other things with fabric. But I still like to make a quilt here and there. Right now I am into quilt jackets in the style of Lady Lancaster. If you get a chance, look up her work. She uses old quilts but lately she had been using new quilts with fabulous fabric lines, made with traditional patterns. I am currently working on my first one. I am making small quilts the size of each pattern piece instead of making an entire quilt and then cutting it up. So much fun!! I will definitely use the Elmer's glue method to baste my small quilts. Thanks so much for sharing your technique, and also for letting us see your relaxed style of the entire process. I'm going to enjoy going through your videos!

Oh wow I just looked up Lady Lancaster quilt jackets 😍 I’m in love!!!! Now I wanna try to make one! Haha! I’m so glad you found glue basting video interesting! It really is a game changer for basting. I know the quilt police can be pretty brutal! They still lurk around, but I think there’s been a shift in recent years where people are putting away the strict rules 💖 quilting is supposed to be fun!

@@StitchObsessed So glad you like Lady Lancaster quilt jackets too! She has Mennonite roots as do I. I have been quilting for a long time and the first ones I made were with templates! Not a rotary mat and cutter in sight when I started back in the 80's. I hand quilted them too. I have made tons of quilts since and dreaded the pin basting so much! That toxic spray has never been an option for me because I get headaches from fumes. The Elmer's glue method is an absolute game changer. I'm currently making blocks for my quilt jacket. I cut up an old comforter to play around with a pattern in Lady Lancaster's Aunt Ethel style. I didn't quite get it, but I think I know what to do to get it closer. I mean, wearing a quilt is going to be so much fun. I really like your Cozy Picnic pattern. Your color choices are beautiful. So glad your channel popped up in my feed!

Might I also add that I appreciate that your speech is not punctuated by “uhhh” and “mmmk”. You know what you want to say and you say it, without worrying about filling every second with your voice. Regarding the basting, I might try spreading out the streams of glue with a credit card or other solid straight edge. I’m not sure if it would distort the fabric or not, but maybe it would work on a smaller project. Alternatively, I would transfer the glue to a squeeze bottle with a tinier tip. Just thinking. Probably overthinking! What you’re doing seems to work!

I just basted the backing to the batting. I can't believe I did it and I enjoyed it. Pin basting made my hands hurt so much!!! My batting was not from a roll--I purchased throw size 60 x 60. I had to put a pin at the end halfway (on each side of the batting and backing ) to help me center the backing on the batting. Everything went well!!! It went quickly and I didn't have to lock up the cat. You are right--if the glue string is heavy the best way to fix it is with the tip of the bottle. I'm glad this video showed you basting a quilt that is bigger than your table since I did mine on a folding table (72 x 30) I purchased for glue basting. When it dries I'll do the quilt top. Thanks so much. This video is life changing for quilters.

THANK YOU! Glue basting is new to this old lady returning to quilt making. Your "real personality & real in home" means of sharing are comforting and assuring. I'm putting together a Dino quilt for my grandson, who is very excited (Nana can't stop or fail now, lol).. and have pondered on how to baste it. Especially now, being older & not as agile as once was. Your technique is straight forward & simple in which I'm surely going to follow your lead. I've hit the follow button, and will check in regularly, as my next ponder is... oh my, how to "quilt" the layers. I returned to sewing & quilting after many years of "life" and found I'd forgotten alot of the lil tips & tricks...finding there's oodles of hacks out there nowadays (thx to all) Love love the Charmed quilt, everything about it, hoping to retrieve the pattern. Again, thank you, THANK YOU!

I like spray basting only for small projects - mug mats, place mats, table runners, small wall hangings, and ONLY spray outside with a friend to hold it. I only spray both sides of the batting, then add the top and back to the sprayed batt after the time allowance in the directions.

I tried the spray basting on the first mug rugs I ever made about a month ago but if I had I known of glue basting then that would have been my choice. I didn’t like going outside even though I use cardboard and a old flannel table cloth to catch the overspray I still didn’t enjoy the overspray and didn’t like it gumming up my needle. It was my first time spray basting so maybe my procedure was wrong. I haven’t tried it yet just stumbled on this video but I think glue basting will be my go to for life. I may now pull out some of my quilt tops to sandwich and my next task will be to conquer FMQ. I have so many UFO to finish.?

I always wash right away when I finish a quilt. There is no danger in not washing, but the quilt does get a little stiff where the glue lays. I also love that quilt crinkle after it’s first wash! 😍 and if you use light fabrics, then yes, sometimes you can see the glue through the fabric, but it washes right out without leaving any stains. 👍🏻 I hope that is helpful!

Basting with Elmer's seems to be a very economical way to baste. The spray glue and other methods can become pricey. I hand quilt,would the Elmer’s glue make it harder for needle to go thru?
@StitchObsessed
@StitchObsessed 11 ай бұрын
I personally don’t hand quilt, so I can’t give a definitive answer, but I don’t believe it will be a problem as long as you use thin lines of glue and not large globs. Using thin lines and then smooshing it down will help the glue spread out and create an even layer instead of a thick ball that would make it difficult to push a needle through. I hope that helps! 💖

@StitchObsessed
@StitchObsessed 11 ай бұрын
You might see a little glue bleed through on light colors, but it doesn’t stain. It washes right out when you complete the quilt and wash it. And no, I haven’t had any issues with gumming up the needle or needle breakage. Breakage would only happen if you use a huge glob of glue, which isn’t what I recommend. I like to use nice thin lines, like in the tutorial. I hope that helps you!💖 thank you for watching!
