I’ve been doing this for years. My tip - keep a moist wash rag nearby to clean your fingers if you get glue on them. Also, I find the iron works almost immediately so I only keep it on the spot a second or two, plus I glue down a whole side at a time. One caution - minky is polyester and doesn’t like hot irons so be careful to stay on the cotton binding as you iron. Also when binding minky, I apply the glue to the cotton binding rather than the minky as the minky absorbs the glue and makes it tougher.

You're so welcome! One tip that I have discovered since I created the video is that you can dilute the glue a bit (1 part water to 3 parts glue or whatever works for you) and it will will hold the binding in place, be a little less stiff, and washes out when the quilt is washed. The dilution also helps to make squeezing the bottle a little easier on your hands. Enjoy!

Very useful tip! I'm wondering if the glue can be used on the satin blanket bindings, perhaps on a lower iron setting? They are so slippery!

My first inclination would be to say yes - on a lower setting for only a couple of seconds, using the tip that delivers a very thin stream of glue. I don't have good luck - no matter how hard I try or which machine I use or how I set the tension, one color always seems to peek through on the other side. I'm sure it's possible - I just don't seem to be able to master that technique. Interesting! But, I was gifted a box of wonder clips, and I love them! They hold well, even just two layers of fabric, and they don't distort the binding like straight pins do on a thick binding. But if glue works for you, great! I may use this idea to applique hexies onto fabric where clips wouldn't help, until I can stitch them.on. Do you glue all the way around before sewing or do it in sections?
@joyfulandmerryquilting2 ай бұрын
I do it in sections. I find the glue dries if I place the glue too far around - so I do about 6-8 inches at a time.
@debkienow80129 ай бұрын
This is the method I use except I use Roxanne's glue baste it. What I found extremely helpful was the tip that you use with that special cap! The problem it Roxanne's glue bottles with the long spouts don't have that special tip cover and it can seal up inside the tip and not be useful anymore. Elmer's school glue is also more cost effective. If I ever find that tip and cover, I am switching to that and Elmer's. The other thing I like about glueing the binding down, is the finished look is so much better and no pins or clips to deal with. It is so much easier to stitch in the ditch.

I tried your method of using the Elmers washable glue for basting my quilt sandwich. My thread keeps breaking, skipped stitches and it’s frustrating. My quilt looks horrible. I changed the needle, rewound my bobbin, using a Singer 401a machine and a Janome MC6600 machines. Polycotton bobbin, embroidery thread for top stitches. When I tested a fabric swatch with the exact fabrics and threads I planned to use the thread broke. Why is this happening. If it doesn’t break, it skipped stitches. I’m disappointed and frustrated on what my quilt now looks like.
@joyfulandmerryquilting4 ай бұрын
I'm sorry to hear that you're having a tough time, and I completely understand how frustrating it can be when things don't go as planned. However, I want to clarify that in my video, I demonstrated using washable glue specifically for basting the binding on my quilt, not for basting the entire quilt sandwich. I haven't personally used glue to baste a quilt sandwich, so I can't speak to that method. While I know some quilters have had success with it, my experience is limited to binding, where I've had good results without issues like thread breakage or skipped stitches. Several viewers have also shared positive experiences with using glue for binding, but it's important to note that techniques can vary in their effectiveness depending on the project and materials used. I'm truly sorry that your quilt hasn't turned out as you'd hoped, but I recommend consulting resources or experts specifically focused on glue-basting quilt sandwiches for more tailored advice. Thank you for sharing your experience, and I hope this helps clarify the method I demonstrated.

I’ve just finished FMQ on my first try at glue basting with Elmer’s school glue. It certainly made the back neater, however I did find the hardness of the areas where the flu had set within the fabric altered the flow of my machine when quilting. Does anyone else find this? Am I doing something wrong?
@joyfulandmerryquilting5 ай бұрын
It sounds like the glue may have been a bit thick in spots or it may have extended beyond the stitching line. I try to keep it above the stitching line so that when I anchor the folded binding to the quilt, it doesn't go through glue. Did you use a thin tip to dispense the glue? In addition you can dilute the glue with 3 parts glue and 1 part water. I didn't have any trouble with it causing problems with my stitching, but I made sure the glue wasn't close to where my needle would enter the binding.
@ladybugsareviciousdefenders5 ай бұрын
@@joyfulandmerryquilting I glued the whole sandwich, not the binding. This is my biggest issue so far. My FMQ wasn’t quite as neat and smooth as I like, although the backing had no puckering, which was my aim. Haven’t done the binding yet, I don’t really have a problem with it, never pin or clip it, just feed it by hand as I go.

Looks great..but, ironing a queen size quilt on an ironing board (most of us do not have a large ironing table as you professionals) would be very difficult.. right? My opinion may be unpopular here but over time it will effect your machine and all that glue over time has to go somewhere. I don’t want to risk paying hundreds to get a perfect mitre corner.
@joyfulandmerryquilting9 ай бұрын
Thanks for your opinion. I have been using washable glue for years on my quilts as well as pressing solutions. I have never had an issue with it causing hundreds of dollars of repairs due to glue collecting in my machine and ruining it. I take good care of my machine and clean it regularly. The needle doesn’t come in contact with anything mechanical in my machine other than the fabric as the needle passes into the quilt and then again when it comes out again. I don’t sew my seam directly on the VERY thin line of glue. The glue is placed just above the stitching line, and I stitch just below the stitching line. I caution you in the video to make your line very thing (using the tip) to keep it from seeping out. In addition, the glue is dry when I stitch, after pressing it with the iron. With all that being said, I believe this technique is safe for my machine. Of course, it’s totally your choice. Whatever works for you and whatever you are comfortable with, when it comes to binding a quilt.
