How is it's a crime? It's perfectly legal, cops don't arrest you for gluing LEGO brick together. Plus it's not your LEGO set, all the LEGO belongs to LEGOLAND. It said; Only model that are going to be permanent displays or shipped gets fused.

When I was a kid I got so tired of my Luke Skywalker X-Wing breaking all the time. So I took it apart and used my older brother's model glue to put it back together. I didn't know about squeeze out and the set has several spots where the glue came out and ran down the side. After I was done the model was so strong that you could lift the entire thing by the tip of any of the cannons on the wings. I still have the set almost 20 years later and it's still able to be picked up by the wing tips. I keep it as a reminder of the lesson I learned while trying something as a kid. It's one of my favorite sets, glue squeeze out and all. :) Next time I'll use the micro syringe and acetone if I ever need to fuse a model again. 😂

I actually would like to know the reason for using acetone instead of regular plastic glue, like the one made by Tamiya, Revell or any other model company. As a wargamer I only use acetone when stripping paint from metal models/tools. So using it instead of adhesive is new to me.

@Ralesong as far as I understand, the acetone acts as sort of a medium-strength solvent with the ABS plastic. When the acetone is applied, it dissolves the plastic at the surface. Polymer solutions are super interesting, but important here is that polymer solutions can flow. So when it's pressed against another piece (I'm not sure if he applies it to both pieces or if the acetone from the first dissolves the second piece too), that pressure forces the solutions to mix and those giant plastic molecules become entangled with each other. Since the acetone evaporates very quickly, you're soon left with only ABS, now with a whole bunch of strong molecular entanglements between the pieces, fusing them together. It essentially allows you to autogenously "weld" the plastic, though "welding" just isn't quite accurate for how plastic operates molecularly If any plastics peoples can add details or corrections, I'd love to know more about this!!

@Ralesong I don't see much similarity, other than each process holds two lego pieces together in the end. This works entirely differently than an adhesive curing. If I had to guess, I think the main advantage here is that acetone is dirt cheap. Why pay for some fancy-pants epoxy when 2 drops of acetone will achieve the same goal of sticking these things together?

When I was a little kid, I got an X Wing Lego set and my mom wanted me to keep it assembled since all of my other sets eventually ended up as loose pieces. She built the Lego set and Super Glued all the pieces together so that I couldn’t break it. Not only did this take away all the joy of building it, but she built it wrong and the wings couldn’t even open up. Luckily she realized her mistake and NEVER attempted this again. When the Lego Movie released, she found the fact that super glue was this horrible threat to Legos hilarious and we laughed about she did all those years back.

This is very similar to how many modelers assemble Games Workshop and other styles of model. Butanone and Acetone are great solvents, with Butanone often being sold as Plastic Glue/Plastic Cement. It literally just melts the parts together, making for a vastly sturdier piece than superglue can. Butanone doesn’t work on resin, making it mostly useful for plastic models, whereas Acetone is often used by modelers to remove super glue or paint, as well as cleaning up 3d printed models. All super cool stuff!!
