Dr. Berg is right about the eggs and everything else he says makes total sense to me. Obviously what we've been told by the so-called experts over all these years is not working so time to try something new. I watched my husband die of complications from diabetes at age 65 after following doctors prescribed diet and medications so I really think it's time to be pointing people in a different direction concerning glucose management.
@ExtraordinaryLiving5 жыл бұрын
Yea, what a sham ... all these doctors who prescribed medications kill their patients *knowingly* only because they are only concerned with keeping their livelihood!
@therogers4432 Жыл бұрын
@miskit and @@ExtraordinaryLiving Yup... ^THIS^ Thank you for pointing this out to the masses, because as a Type 1 Diabetic for 36 years my HbA1C readings (around 5.7 for the last 15 years, so apparently "Excellent" according to my understanting of such matters...) improved significantly (from 8.8-10.5 previously) when I totally stopped listening to my Doctor, Specialist Diabetic Nurses and Nutritionists and ate only what makes me feel good in myself, ie what my body tells me feels "right" and full, rather than the low fat, low Glycaemic Index, low taste, low pleasure rabbit food they all insist that I should be eating exclusively for 365 days of the year... I currently take only 14-16 units of Long Acting Insulin at night and around 12-26 units of Fast Acting Insulin (depending on my anticipated activity-levels AND mental load, because my brain will burn carbs/sugar at a terrifying rate when using my brain flat-out*, but the "Medical Professionals" REFUSE point-blank to accept this...) with meals of 60-100g of carbs that always contain some proportion of "desperately/dangerously unhealthy" animal and vegetable fats, while all these "Health Professionals" INSIST that I "should" be taking 30+ units of Long Acting Insulin and a minimum of 34 units of Fast Acting Insulin for a meal containing around 100g of carbs. FYI, I am an otherwise healthy 49 year old male smoker of 5'11"/185lbs with very low body fat who hasn't been inside a gym since I was 16 and have no desire to whatsoever, but I work outdoors in all weathers, eat (and prick my fingers to test my blood-glucose 8-10 times every day) without scrubbing my hands raw with bleach, walk as much as I can and kayak for 4-6 miles at least twice a week all through the warmer parts of the year. Also, I have only taken 3 sick-days (for an apparently "serious" chest infection, caught on an airplane after sitting next to a sweaty, red-faced guy coughing his guts up into a tissue constantly for the 2.5hr long flight, that I refused to take prescription antibiotics for, incidentally...) in 15 years, and have NEVER caught/tested positive for Covid-19, despite only ever having had 1 "Covid Vaccine" shot right at the very start of them being released onto the market, and only then because my Doctor refused to issue a fresh prescription for my vital Diabetes Meds (Insulin and blood-glucose testing strips) if I didn't have it, which I was furious about then, and still am now... So... How can I possibly trust these so-called highly qualified "experts" who don't live with Type 1 Diabetes every single minute/hour/day of their lives like I do, don't know or care how I feel day-to-day, and who want to fill my body with expensive, potentially toxic laboratory-synthesized drugs, when both my HbA1Cs AND my quality of life/general all-round happiness and wellbeing are so-much improved, when their clipboard tells them that I am doing everything so terribly and unforgivably wrong? *For example, while working-out complex 3D Pythagorean equations longhand using a pencil, paper and a 25 year old Casio programmable pocket calculator, without the "assistance" of a computer, I will NEED to drink a 330ml/12.6oz can of full-sugar Coke (so 33g of pure sugar) EVERY 15 minutes to avoid hypoglycaemia, due to how quickly my brain will devour sugar while being used to around 75% of its' full potential, and double that for something really challenging, ie something that takes my total concentration to the extent that my pulse becomes visible at my temples and I get what I refer to as "Brain Sweats"... But of course, the "Healthcare Professionals" say that is "Really Bad" and totally refuse to accept that this is true, or even possible, and think that I should simply eat a delicious big bowl of oatmeal, perhaps even with a small banana sliced into it, for breakfast if I think that I might have a particularly "challenging" day ahead of me... -And maybe, just maybe ^that^ is why I "failed to live-up to expectations" all through the most important examinations and tests of my educational life, ie because the wholemeal toast and half a grapefruit for breakfast that my "Healthcare Professionals" insisted was ALL that I needed in my stomach before sitting a vitally important 2.5 hour exam that decided my entire future, in which I only scored 72% despite knowing all the answers, but when I asked my mother for a can of Coke to take into the examination with me was told to "take an apple with you, because Doctor XXXXXXX says that's better for you..."

This was confusing at first, but I believe what I'm doing is working. I've lost 24 lbs in last two months. I add MCT oil when I make my Whey shake, I usually add a little harrisa infused olive oil to my beef for flavor so that gets healthy fats in on the lean proteins. Good to know I'm on the right track. John Kilman that's not how it works. Cholesterol and other lipids are mobilized far better when your insulin returns to normal. That's why there are skinny people who have high cholesterol and fat people that don't. What you eat matters a hell of a lot more than how much of something you eat. The insulin is the problem here.

WOW, just had another Dr Berg lightbulb moment. I realized when trying carnivore that adding a lot of fat helped all my headaches/migraines go away. If I slack off on the fat, I start getting headaches everyday. I thought it was a hormonal effect but since fat is buffering insulin it makes a lot more sense as that is creating a more stable environment for the brain.

Hey people, please don't be confused by what he says about whole wheat bread. There is a difference. If you read the ingredients on the product you will see that whole wheat bread has other types of flour in it that cause it to have a high GI. Just becuase it has some whole wheat in it, the manufacturer is able to call it whole wheat bread, even though it may have other flours in it. Rather you need to look for 100% stone ground whole wheat bread, this bread had a low GI of 53. It must not contain any other type of flour, thus the 100% descriptor. Also note that other, closer to nature breads, like pumpernickel and rye bread also have low GI of 50 and 41 respectively. Another option is sourdough bread has a GI of 57, this is due to the acid that is added to the bread, as acids reduce the GI of the food being eaten. The key is to do your research and pay attention to all the descriptors of the item, ie. whole wheat bread is NOT the same as 100% stone ground whole wheat. I ate low GI breads in my reduced calorie diet and lost 45 pounds in 4 months.
@jennyfaylyn99096 жыл бұрын
Really what he is saying is correct. The labels can be misleading. Even on Dr. OZ he said that you may as well eat white bread because the difference is so minute. I remember him also saying that Almond milk and regular milk don't pose a big difference also as far as calories are concerned.
@lozgod6 жыл бұрын
I won’t eat wheat but to add to what you said for those that do, another ingredient to watch out for is sugar in whole wheat bread. Some is needed to feed yeast in the processing of bread but some are loaded for flavor plus some actually have high fructose added. Someone mentioned sourdough. If I was eating bread it would be all I eat but even then you have to read the label. Most store brand sourdough breads have sugar and yeast. At the Natural Food store near me they have 6 different sourdough breads and only one lacked yeast and sugar. True sourdough bread is not made with added yeast.

Dr. Bikman says that protein gives an entirely different insulin response depending on the metabolic state of your body when consuming it. If you are not consuming carbs, apparently the body will not increase insulin, as that would turn of gluconeogenesis and you would die of hypoglycaemia. What are your thoughts on this?

Great stuff :-) Having been a T2 Diabetic, I unwittingly ate and now eat accordingly. When I began, I didn't even know what the GI was, let alone the II... I simply followed what my body was telling me, not what it was craving... That is usually sugars. Even today, I sometimes crave a couple slices of toast, but a smother it in Organic Butter and/or Almond butter or some other nut or seed butter, like Tahini. And Eggs, all the time. However, I try not to cook the Yokes, even in boiled eggs. If I have Rye Bread and often Multi-grain, I spread Bacon drippings and load it up with Himalayan Pink Salt... Yummy! @@hantla no, saturated fat causes insulin resistance, combining it with whey is a really bad idea. Short term high insulin isn't bad, but high blood glucose is. Whey protein taken alone actually lowers blood sugar because of the insulin release. Google it.

Hey Dr Berg, any tips to keep a good omega 6 to omega 3 ratio?
@slydog71316 жыл бұрын
According to the original paper by Susanne Holt, the insulin index of beef is only 51 (white bread = 100) and is lower than almost all carbohydrate foods. Of the protein-rich foods she examined, only eggs and cheese (45) were lower, and cheese wasn't much lower. She didn't publish data about butter or bacon, but beef had one of the lower insulin indexes of all foods examined. Oddly, to me, white pasta (40) has a lower insulin index than beef, cheese and most other foods. There are likely other reasons to reduce red meat consumption, as well as processed meats like bacon, but the insulin index doesn't seem to be one of them.

"Insulin Index" is perhaps itself a bit of a misleading term. In a fasted state, the same protein that increases insulin for a subject with high blood glucose will not raise insulin. More significant than insulin levels is the insulin/glucagon ratio. On a keto or low-carb diet that number is about 1.3, compared to 0.8 in a fasted state. Both numbers are an order of magnitude lower than those for a higher carb diet. These states also support the catabolic processes absent from subjects with a higher insulin/glucagon number. (See Dr Benjamin Bikman)

Hello Dr. Berg, what would you recommend someone who has a fasting blood sugar level of 7.4, after 20 hours of fasting, and a blood ketone level of 1.4? It would be someone who has been on a ketogenic diet for over 8 months (both glucose and ketones checked regularly with blood readings), coupled with daily intermittent fasting of at least 16/8 but more likely around 18/6 or 20/4. Over those 8 months 16 kilos body weight were lost. What would you say that for some completely unknown reason blood glucose has actually risen over time, despite slowly incorporating resistance exercise, and making sure to be out in the sun every day?

"How fast carbohydrates or sugars turn into, or affect the blood sugars" - "Trigger insulin...insulin is the hormone that regulates blood sugars, it tends to lower blood sugars... "In the presence of insulin, it's almost impossible to lose weight." This was the "least important" to me, as I've always maintained, being lean. *But* - since I've never had in-between meals snacks, or junk food 99 percent of the time, it's easier. "But there other foods that you eat , that WON'T necessarily...they're not sugary foods but they do trigger insulin..." Summary: "The goal is to keep insulin low, and it just so happens that, the only foods that don't really trigger insulin that much are the fats." I'm curious, as, for example; I've never eaten a whole plate of white rice, nor had 2 large/medium papayas/banana in one sitting - usually half at brunch, other half late evening (about 5 hours gap) - it's just a habit - So, wouldn't the pancreas (Googled! The pancreas has two main functions: an exocrine function that helps in digestion and an endocrine function that regulates blood sugar) be able to do it's "job?" As opposed to "overloading" without a break between meals, say from 12 noon till 7 pm?

So, I looked at the insulin response of various foods, googling insulin index, and pasta is lower than beef, and white fish is the same as an orange, so now I’m really confused. If pasta produces less insulin than beef either the index isn’t helpful or low carb is wrong and insulin response is the proper measure. I understand that beef may stimulate other fat burning but that can’t fully counteract things, can it? And if it can, then insulin can’t be that big of a deal, these other counteracting measures should be the focus if they nullify the bad effects of the insulin response. In other words, if pasta is ok by this index then is pasta ok or is this index useless????
@og65176 жыл бұрын
I'd stick with the insulin index, just my opinion. That's why people are doing Intermittent Fasting and 24 to 36 hour fasts to lose weight.. cuz no matter what you eat.. it raises insulin. I think Avocados are very low on the list.

yeah but beef also has fat same as fish. the fat counter balances the insulin response

Think protein vs. Fat content... Higher fat content lessens insulin response Are you gonna eat white fish with oil or butter? Yes. Orange with butter? No. Not normally. Add fats, good fats. That is the key if you're not IR.

Follow insulin index. It's the one to pay attention too. Also insulin reaction is higher 50% in the evening. Eat last time as early as possible. In term fasting
