I've been restoring photos for nearly 20 years, but only recently been interested in portrait photography. I can't thank you enough for this video; Using a self portrait I took in 2013 with a Canon Powershot A640, I followed your tutorial carefully and wow, what a transformation. Looking forward to watching more of your videos.

Mate, I've been a subscriber and regular watcher of the biggest names in KZbin photography and photoshop for many years. And I've got to say, you just simplify things down to the absolute essentials. No more steps than needed, but no cutting corners either. Your videos are easy to understand and make it easy to attain results. There's a lot of content out there, but few that put it all together the way you do. Thank you.

When I select the eyes and have the marching ants, if I select the colour adjustment layer - the mask affects all the image and not the eyes - a quick 'inverse' on the mask fixes it. Am I missing a key command?

glyn--kudos!! So thorough and communicated so well!! Really enjoy learning from you!! Have gotten some of your materials and have been very pleased! Have a question--at 1:07 when you add the contrast, did you stamp the layers for that unsharp mask layer?

Great video, my first time using merged layers to keep all my layers intact- I'm just a bit confused that when I want to adjust any of the groups or layers underneath a merged layer that it will be hidden by that top layer, am I missing something obvious?
@marcherrmann96357 жыл бұрын
At 13:30 you could have ticked the Content Aware checkmark being an option of the crop tool, in order to avoid spending time in the additional steps of making a selection and filling it via the Content Aware option of the Fill dialog. I'm pretty sure you know this fact, but perhaps it might be still helpful for some of those people using Photoshop CC in any version from July 2016 on (2015.5.0 and later), when this option has been added to the crop tool.
@glyndewis7 жыл бұрын
Marc Herrmann yep totally agree. Rarely use that to be honest as I find content aware drags in other parts of the photo I don't want when this close so have to add a mask beforehand. Does work well a lot of the time though. Thanks for commenting and yeah definitely worth showing in another video.

I like you use photoshop mainly but have been considering starting my workflow in Lightroom. Also like you I only make some basic changes in camera raw and I don't see the benefit of starting in Lightroom and then having to go to Photoshop. Why not open from Bridge straight into CR and on into Photoshop or do you see some benefit of starting in Lightroom? Thanks, Pete
@glyndewis7 жыл бұрын
Main reason for starting in Lightroom Peter is because that's where I organise all my files and also then upload to my portfolio so doing it all from there makes sense for my workflow ;)

Good Morning ! First, your video is really good !!! Very very good ! But, for the next videos, can you write the commands you are referring to please? For people who do not speak English, like me, it is sometimes difficult to understand. For example, if you say "command + alt" write under the video "cmd + alt" or if you say "duplicate layer" write "cmd+J" etc... My english is really bad, I hope you understand what I'm trying to say...Thanks for your very complete and detailed videos !!!

In the Dodge and burn, How do you change from dodge to burn using your keyboard?
@Sarah-tv7ol3 жыл бұрын
Press the letter O or CMD+O depending on whichever way you have your settings
@chrissekely7 жыл бұрын
When you are dodging and burning it seems you are trying to make dark areas darker and light areas lighter...so, how is this any different from using contrast? Couldn't you just appropriately mask in a good contrast effect?
@glyndewis7 жыл бұрын
Chris dodging and burning is a form of adding contrast anyway to be honest but masking in a good contrast effect would mean (IMO) much more work...applying contrast, masking it out then painting it in at different opacity levels to suit the areas you're working on. Doing this 'could' also mean brushing over areas more than once so increasing the density of the contrast in this area. With the grey technique we can not only add dodging and burning but then also use blur to blend the highlights and shadows and also paint with a 50% grey brush after the fact to reduce or remove the dodging and burning in certain areas...does that make sense? Here's a video showing what I mean if you've not seen this before: kzbin.info/www/bejne/opm9XoBmnrtmgsU
@chrissekely7 жыл бұрын
Hi Glyn. Your answer was really helpful for my understanding. Thank you. I only dabble in PS at this point, but I'm sure there are many others who watch your videos who have also had this question. Hopefully your answer here will help them as well. Again, thank you. Thanks for taking the time to write such a thorough and easy to understand answer. Andsorry it took me so long to get back to you. Have a nice day.

Why is it necessary to create many merged copies of the original picture during the editing process? I'm a beginner... why not just have one copy of the original picture and use masks and blending modes only??? Thanks!
@glyndewis6 жыл бұрын
This is because some of the filters used won't work if we don't use them on a merged layer with other filters and retouching on them. They need to be kept separate so that we can a) apply them and b) control their individual strength (opacity) etc... Unfortunately they are unavoidable unless we group layers together and create smart objects but the problem then is when we come to look at the layers later on as Smart Objects open in separate tabs.
@darksamiss6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Are the "merged layers" basically a linked-copy and not a finite copy... meaning they are automatically updated when prior layers have been decided to be re-altered? Just having trouble understanding how multiple merged-copies of the same picture (subject) allow you to see all the effects at the end of the editing process!
